  • Small, dog-friendly and family-run farm site five miles from the beach
  • A 15-minute drive from Craster, Seahouses and Alnwick Castle
  • Large field for kids and dogs to play; pubs and restaurants nearby
Nearby Northumberland sand, stargazing and plenty of scope for coastal or country walks… what a set of attractions Doxford Farm Camping has. As a small, family-run site five miles from the nearest sandy beach, there’s a lot to like about this place – especially for those who want to stay somewhere that welcomes dogs, children and couples with open arms too. It’s all well-maintained here, and some might say quite on the luxurious side, given that the communal facilities include three large shower rooms each with a large power shower, basin, loo, mirror and hair dryer. So, feel free to dress up for any visits to the local pubs and restaurants within five to 15 minutes’ drive of the site – they sell delicious food locally sourced from the land and sea. What sort of places can you set sail to, then? Low Newton-by-the Sea beach (10 minutes’ drive) and Embleton Bay (15 minutes) are some of the closest sandy stretches. Further out, between 15 minutes and 20 minutes’ drive, are more dog-friendly beaches and coastal havens like Bamburgh, Seahouses, Craster and Beadnell Bay (and Alnwick is 15 minutes’ drive inland for attractions like a castle and a huge second-hand book shop with model trains). Back at your base, which is located on a family-run working farm, there’s heaps of space and peace for walks, stargazing or stopping to smell the large bank filled with daffodils and tulips in the spring or wildflowers and other plants in the summer. There’s a large field for kids, dogs (and any big kids) to let off steam, as well as a pot wash area with a large double sink and hot and cold water to deal with any barbecue leftovers.

What customers say

This small, peaceful, well-kept campground offers spacious, level sites. Guests rave about the excellent, clean facilities, especially the private shower/toilet rooms. It's praised for its easy A1 access and closeness to the Northumberland coast and attractions. Dishwashing sinks are a bit small, and farm noise can occur. Great for a relaxing getaway.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Lovely quiet site, beautiful views, easily accessible to beautiful sights of Northumberland! Will Absolutley be returning! Pitch 7 (non-electric) was fabulous (needed to use our levelling blocks but not an issue!) roomy, private and gorgeous views. Massive field for kids to play in, never felt overlooked or crowded. Perfect peaceful family getaway spot!

Disliked Nothing really, showers/loos could perhaps do with a bit of an update but they were always clean! Seperate loo’s from the showers would also be handy as occasionally all 3 taken up with people showering and we then had kids waiting desperate for the loo.

Liked Loved this little site. Must book on line and you just arrive and pick a free pitch no booking in. Site owner comes around and says hello . Super quiet at night all guests suspect respectful. Plenty of space for kids to run around in a big recreation field provided. Lots of dog walking around the area. It is quite remote so no amenities near by you have to drive to shops and beach etc. Seahouses and Alnwick lovely places to visit but I would say only for a few hours max unless you visit Alnwick castle . Showers very hot and washing up very basic but all worked ok.

Disliked Showers were a little tricky to operate and one of them didn’t work so had to change shower rooms.

Liked A great location to explore the local beaches & villages.
Nice large grass pitches all well maintained.
Very quiet at night. Dog friendly.
Large field area for ball games.
Great WiFi

Disliked The showers were terrible.
We had no hot water on several occasions and a few times no water at all.
Also, the washing-up area isn't great. Very small sink and no draining area, with the same water issues as the shower.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review and we are pleased you enjoyed our lovely beaches and surrounding area. I am very sorry to hear the showers weren’t up to scratch. As I spoke with you at the time I looked into the shower issue on several occasions but the pressure seemed to be down in the local area during your stay. As we are in the countryside the infrastructure of pipework is often not as modern as that in the cities and towns and we find that on odd occasions this can cause an issue with the pressure. Unfortunately this wasn’t caused by our showers or the block but the general pressure of water in the area at that time. Luckily it doesn’t happen too often but after speaking with Northumbrian water they said the lack of rain fall recently it causes more demand in the area which can ultimately affect the flow and pressure of the water. Once again my apologies you experienced this during your stay, we haven’t experienced this again since your stay so hopefully that continues. Kind Regards, Katryna

A perfect spot.

Local attractions

Here primarily for the sea? With sand dunes, castle ruins in the background and a view of Lindisfarne Island, Bamburgh beach (20 minutes’ drive) is a pretty good place to start. Dine on the classic Craster (15 minutes) kippers before taking a fishing trip from the harbour or head for Seahouses (15 minutes) if you fancy spending some time puffin and seal spotting on boat trips to the Farne Islands. Holy Island (35 minutes) is another island destination, accessible by car depending upon the tide, with a huge castle and priory. Compare notes with the castle in Alnwick (15 minutes), which runs re-enactments, jesting and other historical workshops. Leave enough time for an earl grey tea at Howick Hall Gardens & Arboretum (15 minutes) too – after all, the earl it’s named after once lived there. Local wedding venues include Doxford Barns (15 minutes’ walk), Charlton Hall (20 minutes), Doxford Hall Hotel and Spa (five minutes’ drive) and Newton Hall (10 minutes).
