  • Peaceful site on a farm a 15-minute drive from Malham, North Yorkshire
  • Scaleber Force Waterfall 15 minutes’ drive; Skipton half an hour
  • Within Yorkshire Dales National Park; dogs welcome; resident animals
Crakemoor Campsite sits on the southern fringes of Yorkshire Dales National Park, sandwiched between two National Landscapes (Nidderdale to the east and Forest of Bowland to the south west). And you know what that sweet location means: epic walks. Your dog (who is welcome here) will thank you for it – or at least be wagging their tail in approval. This family-friendly site sits on a working farm that’s absolutely peaceful – and also pretty remote: it’s a 15-minute drive to the village of Malham, which has a couple of traditional pubs (serving food), plus a visitors’ centre with friendly staff who will help you find your way around the Yorkshire Dales. This is wild camping at its best, with pitches on vast grassy fields (where you can make friends with the resident animals, which include sheep and cattle) and the spectacular scenery of North Yorkshire all around you. Basic facilities are available (there are portable toilets and showers, for example); however, please note that there is no drinkable water on site. Barbecues are allowed, and you can source provisions in the village or head to the market town of Settle (20 minutes’ drive) for a wider choice of supermarkets, eateries and drinking venues, plus a bike-hire place.

What customers say

Spectacular views & peaceful escape. Guests love the scenery, friendly owners, and clean facilities. Choose your own spot! Bumpy access track & noisy wind turbine are minor points. Limited wash-up/no bins noted. Great value, idyllic spot.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We came across this site by chance as our usual one was fully booked. The location is beautiful—the views are marvellous and it’s a great place to switch off from the everyday hustle and bustle. It’s also very convenient, with Malham Cove and other main attractions only about a 20-minute drive away.
The site itself is clean and well looked after, and the hosts are welcoming and quick to respond, which we really appreciated.

Disliked That said, there are a few drawbacks: there’s only one shower and two toilets for the whole campsite, which meant we often had to queue, especially with around 30 tents on site. It would also be helpful to have rubbish bins available, as we couldn’t find any during our stay. In addition, the grass was very dense and high, which made it less comfortable for pitching tents.
Overall, it’s a lovely site with lots of charm, but with a few improvements it could be much better.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Beautiful campsite with stunning views. Good atmosphere with lots of families and couples. The lady who owns the site stopped by regularly to ensure all was well which was so reassuring. We had a great time.

Disliked I would advise light sleepers to bring some ear plugs as several planes flew directly over, they didn't wake my husband though so could just be me!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Large campsite with gorgeous views! Lady that checked us in was very friendly and made us feel welcome. Facilities were always clean.

Disliked Only one shower and two toilets for quite a large campsite, so there were queues. However, we would love to come back midweek.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Large field, could pitch where you wanted. Beautiful views and very remote and quiet... the driveway was around 2 miles long!

Disliked Only one shower.... we thought it may cause issues but few people chose to use it so it wasn't a problem.

Local attractions

Armed with leaflets and maps from Malham’s visitors’ centre, you can head into the Yorkshire Dales and explore sites like Scaleber Force Waterfall (15 minutes’ drive), which tumbles down over several moss-covered limestone steps; Janet’s Foss (20 minutes), a waterfall with a natural pool that’s a popular spot among wild swimmers; and Gordale Scar (20 minutes), a dramatic rocky ravine. Skipton (half an hour) has an exceptionally well-preserved medieval castle with a formidable entrance flanked by imposing towers. Take a boat trip cruising along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, constructed in the 18th century to facilitate movement of raw materials during the Industrial Revolution. The Ingleborough Estate Nature Trail (half an hour) takes you through splendid woodland to a limestone landscape that includes the Ingleborough Cave. Bring an extra cardigan if you decide to explore these subterranean passages (it’s chilly underground). Alternatively, climb the 700-odd metres to the summit of Ingleborough.
