  • Spacious adults-only Yorkshire site with easy access from the A64
  • A 20-minute drive from central York and 45 minutes from the coast
  • Eco-friendly site with a nature trail and nest box webcams
Gorgeous North Yorkshire countryside all around, handy access to the A64 and York a mere 20 minutes’ drive down the road… there’s no denying Flaxton Meadows is in a very fine setting indeed. And it has a good mix of rural views too – this is a site that has farmland on one side and the wildlife-packed Strensall Common heathland on the other. And that means plenty of options for cyclists and walkers, whether you’re into strolling on local paths or tackling longer outings on the likes of the Ebor Way or Yorkshire Wolds Way. Don’t know where to start? The team on site are on hand to offer advice. As well as day trips to York, they also frequently recommend outings to Castle Howard and Scarborough. Being rather proud of their area, the owners here have put in a lot of effort to make their place eco friendly, kitting it out with renewable energy sources, establishing wildlife areas and using sustainable building materials where possible. A nature trail and educational boards help guests to get to know the area and nest-box webcams give everyone the chance to get a closer look at what’s rustling in the trees.

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Quiet and very friendly

Disliked Fencing around amenities block meaning you had walk past bar area if you wanted to get to pot wash or laundry. Signs say laundry 24 hours but we found that they locked it up at about 10.00. and prior to this someone's washing was in the machine. One of the staff said it would be open again at 8.00 am, in fact it was open at 7.00, implied that I had misheard. Also drain in disabled shower had lots of hair clogging it.

Mitchell's Field powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The site has had a ‘glow up’ since we visited last year. The camping pitches have been extended and more organised pitching.

The outside bar area has had an upgrade

Facilities spotless as always and nice running showers

It’s one of the most peaceful sites that we’ve stayed on.

We were originally placed smack bang in the middle of electric hookups but the guy getting us sorted realised we didn’t need it and move us to a peaceful spot

Disliked Not a dislike but a bit of a culture shock early in the morning when you go to the toilet and Flaxton Radio is still playing full blast

FHU cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Lovely peaceful site, friendly & hard working wardens. We enjoyed drinks in the bar & the games provided & the outside seating area & the food van.
Spotless toilets & showers

Disliked It’s quite remote, we booked it when we had a caravan but changed to a motorhome. Although an Uber into York was only £12

Mitchell's Field powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked This was our second time visiting Flaxton Meadows after staying only two nights last year and wishing we'd stayed longer. The site was everything we'd hoped for on our return, with a spruced up outdoor area at the on-site bar and a new weekend menu for the pizza truck. The drinks, pizzas and sides are reasonably priced, and the staff are friendly and welcoming. The facilities are still the best we've visited whilst camping, and we would happily stay even longer!

Disliked Flaxton Meadows is adults-only and mainly a quiet, relaxing campsite (not a dislike!). Unfortunately, on our final night, some unruly campers ignored the “quiet after 10pm” rule, partying with loud music, shouting and jeering until 3am. Several complaints were made to staff via the emergency number, but nobody came out overnight.

At 7am, we were woken by overhearing the site manager telling them to pack up and leave after "too many complaints." This would have been fine had it have been enforced. Instead, the louts carried on as if nothing had happened, strolling the nature trail and enjoying a leisurely breakfast whilst neighbouring campers like ourselves were left to pack up on little sleep before the 12pm departure. By the time we left, they still hadn’t moved, and no further action was taken.

We previously thought the campsite had quite strict rules, but the lack of enforcement was disappointing. Had we been staying another night, the issue might have been easier to shrug off with a lie-in, but having to pack up and leave on little sleep whilst the perpetrators enjoyed their morning made it feel especially frustrating and quite insulting.

Mitchell's Field powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Very clean, approachable staff that were very professional and helpful.
Good location with an Uber costing around £10 to get to the centre of York.
spacious pitches and not money grabbing (very appealing as many sites are now)
The bar is a nice atmosphere and the drinks were very reasonable, I really like that they are not greedy and because of that it's an absolute gem and I would highly recommend, I will be returning again soon.
Absolutely fantastic facilities including a hairdryer (again FREE) and lovely toilets.
Bring your rock pegs as the ground is a bit hard but wasn't a problem for us!

Disliked The £60 deal for three nights when booking with them direct is only for campers and caravans not tents.

Local attractions

Starting your explores of the local area is as simple as wandering next door to Strensall Common, managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and with plenty of paths to wander along (some of them accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs). York (20 minutes) is a must, of course – for history at the Jorvik Viking Centre, walks along the old walls and visits to the National Railway Museum. For more on the heritage front, next stops should certainly be Castle Howard (15 minutes), Nunnington Hall (25 minutes) and Rievaulx Abbey (35 minutes). There's a Go Ape adventure park at Dalby Forest (35 minutes) for an active day out. And there’s always the prospect of a trip to the coast at Filey (45 minutes) or Scarborough (50 minutes)… Can’t make your mind up? The team here has assembled a collection of podcasts to give you a flavour of some of the options and help you make your decisions.
