  • Well-maintained Yorkshire campsite with clifftop views
  • Withernsea five minutes' drive; 20 minutes to Spurn Point
  • Heated shower block; secure site with CCTV
Set in an impressively peaceful spot just a short distance from the Yorkshire coast, Hollym Airfield Caravan and Camping is a laidback site in a scenic clifftop location. With spacious grass pitches and lots of fine views, this family-friendly site – where well-behaved dogs are also welcome to come and join you on your travels – is about a mile and a half from the local town of Withernsea and 40 minutes' drive from Hull. The nearest beach is roughly 10 minutes away on foot, and if you keep heading along the shore (when the tide is out) you'll soon reach the town centre (25 minutes from base), where you can access its handy shops, supermarkets, promenade and leisure centre. Hollym Airfield Caravan and Camping is a family-run business with well-maintained amenities, including a washing-up area, a water refill point, a grey water disposal point, CCTV for extra security and a heated toilet and shower block with disabled facilities. After a day of long exploring, you could light up a barbecue by your pitch, explore the various eateries on offer in Withernsea or tuck into a traditional fish and chips there or in other coastal spots such as Hornsea (35 minutes) or Bridlington (an hour).

Powered grass campsite

Liked The location and views out to sea. 30 mins walk to Withensea and 15 mins to a medium sized Tesco store (Aldi in Withensea.
Lovely warm welcome from the owner, very helpful and accommodating
Lovely walk via in the main the coastal path into Withensea
Lots of space for children to run and play
Fridge/freezer for the use of campers
Windbreakers and fire pits can be hired from reception in an honestly based pay per night, also eggs and firewood in sake

Disliked The pitches went clearly marked out, we’d booked EU hookup for a caravan and awning and the space allocated barely had enough room for the caravan and awning and definitely no room for the car
However when speaking to the owner it wasn’t a problem we’d spilt over our allotted area.
Also lots of extension leads running across pitches to allow max use of the hook up points. However this looked dangerous to me especially as the site isn’t lit up at night
The shower in the disabled bathroom sloops away for the plug meaning it floods, a large squeegee is provided but wouldn’t imagine anyone elderly or with a disability would struggle to get all the water cleared
Would have liked a mop and bucket in all the showers as the did get grubby on the run up to cleaning

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Spacious field despite being full. Barrier entry with code. Sea views. Clean facilities with non-gendered options. Warm showers. We were by the road but it was quiet. Massive freezer space.

Disliked No hand towels at weekends. Need to take stony ground tent pegs, particularly as it had been so dry.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Plenty of room, flat pitches. Great seaside/coastal location,
ideal base for exploring Spurn Point. Toilet and shower block looked fairly new and were cleaned regularly.

Disliked No hand drying facilities in the toilets.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked The view was amazing. Short drive to Withernsea and Patrington.

Disliked No way to dry hands at the weekend (see picture) the only way to dry hands in the toilets is with paper towels, which they apparently do not stock on weekends. This meant visitors were using toilet roll to dry their hands which meant running low on toilet roll and pieces of damp toilet roll left around the sink areas and floor. There were also several brown marks on the walls and a brown footprint on the floor of the cubicles that were still there following the "12-1pm" cleaning. Cables running the width of the campsite made it dangerous for walking across to facilities, especially at night. They do have little red flags at the plug points, but would be very easy to trip over the cables of the electric hook ups. We couldn't find the "10 minute walk to the beach" and when we asked, we were met with sarcasm saying that the quickest wat was to jump off the cliff. They then explained that there was a make shift "staircase" that the fishermen use to get down the cliff, or we could walk down the main road to the promenade (this is at least 1.5miles away). The charging facilities were a plug to plug ur phone in and leave it, other places we have been have lock boxes so you can step away knowing your phone is secure. When we asked about this, we were told we can leave our phones plugged in, in the communal open space area next to communal fridge/freezer, outside the door of mens toilets and they would be safe as they "had CCTV" (but they don't trust people to use their paper towels? Not having facilities to dry hands following use of toilet is against EHO regulation). When we asked staff questions, it felt like we were bothering them.

Local attractions

History and heritage abound around here: you're about five minutes' drive from such spots as RAF Holmpton bunker or Withernsea's well-maintained lighthouse museum, where you can learn about the area's mariners and airfarers of yesteryear. There are several more museums to explore in Hull (40 minutes), including Wilberforce House, where you can find out more about abolitionist and MP William Wilberforce, Kingston upon Hull's most celebrated son. Birdwatchers should pack some sturdy footwear, some binoculars and a thermos flask and head to Spurn Point (20 minutes), a spectacular nature reserve that extends for well over a mile into the North Sea. Seabirds also flock to Flamborough Head (an hour), just north of Bridlington, which is well worth visiting if you don't mind the drive. Brought kids who'll need to be kept entertained? Take them for a spin around the animal enclosures at Bugtopia Hornsea Zoo (35 minutes), or alternatively pack plenty of spare change and dispatch them to the arcades in Withernsea and Hornsea.
