  • Well-maintained and green site five miles from the Suffolk coast
  • Lake and nature trail on site
  • On-site village shop and off-licence; pub 10 minutes' walk away
Travel five miles inland from the sunny Suffolk coastline and you’ll arrive at this little gem on the outskirts of Wenhaston. The gorgeous, well-maintained grounds at this smart site are just part of the attention to detail all around the park, which has been carefully laid out by the friendly and helpful owners. There's greenery all around here: this small and pretty site has its own nature trail and lake, and is surrounded by acres of countryside for hikes and rambles. If walking isn't your thing, hire bikes from the Southwold Bike Centre (20 minutes' drive away) to pedal around the flats of Suffolk; horse riding's pretty popular in the area too, or you could go golfing at Halesworth Golf Club five minutes' drive away. Taking things (much easier), the local pub is a 10-minute walk down the road. Heathside Caravans has a village shop and an off-licence on site for those holiday essentials, and a well-maintained shower block for guests' use. For more supplies. the village of Halesworth is under 15 minutes' drive away and Aldeburgh, Snape and Beccles are all within half an hour.

What customers say

This is a well-kept, peaceful campsite with large, clean grounds and friendly staff. It's a great base for exploring the Suffolk coast and Southwold. Families love the play areas and open spaces for kids. Glamping pods and shepherd's huts are generally comfy, though some guests noted minor issues with mattresses or Wi-Fi. Limited shower/toilet facilities at peak times are occasionally mentioned.

Shepherd's hut

Liked Area is nice and clean, nice walk around.

Disliked The beds in the Sheppard hut were quite uncomfortable. You could feel the metal frame underneath. It was impossible to sleep without an additional mattress on top. When we lodged a complaint, we were provided with two mattress toppers and a quilt; however, this did not enhance the comfort. My father even joked that prisoners have a more comfortable sleeping arrangement. We were informed that they are attempting to replace the toppers, but in my view, the beds need to be replaced entirely. Therefore, if you plan to travel here, make sure to bring an extra mattress, as even the beautiful views will not compensate for a lack of a good night's sleep.

Shepherd's hut

Liked Beautiful campsite with a brilliant shop. All very well manicured and spotlessly clean facilities. Lovely helpful owners. The shepherds hut was spacious and great value for money. Shame we couldn’t stay another night. Thank you 😊.

Disliked A mirror in the Shepherds hut would be a helpful addition.

FHU grass campsite

Liked lovely flat, big pitches separated by hedges and very clearly marked. Lovely disabled shower which was really good for my husband. If you have dogs then this site is wonderful. A short walk behind the pitches and we followed the tree line which took as straight onto the heath. Our cocker spaniels loved it.

Disliked we stayed on pitch 8 and had to go out and buy some extra waste hose as the nearest waste water drain was on pitch 7

Shepherd's hut

Liked The site was lovely, beautiful grounds, child friendly, easy to navigate

Disliked if there was one thing that I would say that could be changed, It would be the beds in the shepherds hut, just very uncomfortable, quite hard so lack of sleep did affect my holiday.

Local attractions

After all the walking, cycling, horse riding and golfing, get stuck into the area's history at the 12th-century fortress of Framlingham Castle, half an hour's drive away. Once the refuge of Mary Tudor, this fab place now has exhibitions, themed trails and an audio tour covering its centuries of history: enough to keep young Horrible Histories fans entertained too. Arty sorts will know that Suffolk is Constable country: if this is you, come armed with camera or paintbox to snap and sketch the countryside, harbour and coastal views around the area. You could also take a trip to art complex the Snape Maltings on the Alde river, for events, activities and evening entertainment in the concert hall. Seaside? But of course. Have a stroll around Southwold and its colourful beach huts, or drive half an hour north to Lowestoft for seaside amusements and Pleasurewood Hills, a nifty tucked away theme park with rollercoasters and attractions for all. Walberswick beach, around a 15-minute drive from Heathside, is a popular spot for crabbing. If you’re staying at Heathside for a while, set off early and spend the whole day on the Norfolk Broads (about an hour and 15 minutes' drive north, or drive south for around an hour and a half to the villages of Long Melford and Lavenham with their medieval timber-framed houses.
