  • Family-friendly farm, 20 minutes from Norwich and half hour from coast
  • Well-placed for watersports and boat trips on the Norfolk Broads
  • Dogs welcome; plenty of walking and cycling paths directly from site
Can’t decide between a bit of farm life, bright city lights and refreshing coastal explores? Ditch the dithering and pack the whole lot in to one stay at Two Jays Farm: this small, family-friendly farm is in Horstead, a 20-minute drive from Norwich and half an hour from Norfolk’s beaches. You’ll be in good company here – in the adjacent fields your neighbours will be the farm's resident horses, goats and chickens, and you're welcome to bring along a four-legged pal of your own if you've got a dog that fancies the trip. Canine companion or no, this is a fine spot for getting out for a walk. Set off on foot or cycle along woodland paths and riverbanks to take in sights like the Bure Valley Railway, Horstead Mill on the River Bure (where you can jump into the water for a wild swim if it's getting a tad warm) and pretty market towns along the way. If you fancy getting out on the water instead you can hire paddleboards and kayaks on site. Your reward at the end of a lengthy walk – perhaps a good feed at one of the nearby foodie pubs? The nearest is less than 10 minutes’ walk from the site, and there are a few more to choose from – along with some takeaways and a supermarket – in nearby Coltishall village, which is a 20-minute walk away (or a few minutes’ drive).

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Such a lovely campsite. It was pretty full when we got there, but there was still plenty of room for us to pitch up our tent. Lots of other families with children, so a lovely atmosphere for families. The reception has board games that you can borrow and return, which I thought was a lovely touch. They also sell a few bits and also have a communal fridge/ freezer if you want to store any perishables. And the animals!! You can walk around and see all the horses, sheep and alpacas. The toilets and showers were clean, and considering how full the campsite was, it was a surprisingly short wait for them. You’re allowed to bring BBQs/ cookers, but they do also rent out fire pits with firewood. We only stayed one night, but we will definitely be back because next time we want to rent one of the kayaks!

Disliked: The only small criticism I would make is that the campsite isn’t set back that far from the road, so you can hear cars and it’s not quite as tranquil as I was hoping for. But again, if you’re there on a family holiday, then it really doesn’t matter.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Everything. The site is beautiful, clean and very friendly. Michelle was welcoming from the start and nothing was too much trouble. We went kayaking on the river and the kids absolutely loved it from our 8 year old to our teenager. We all enjoyed jumping in the river afterwards. We will definitely stay again as we have family in the area and this proved to be everything we wanted, and more. We look forward to exploring the are further.

Poppy primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: A lovely little campsite with a choice of two fields both with a very slight slope, which is no bad thing after weeks of rain as it was firm under wheels. On arrival, we went to reception to check in and found the owners to be very friendly and welcoming. The reception is also an honesty shop so your 2am craving for a Magnum needn't go unanswered. The site is bordered by horse, sheep and alpaca paddocks and a chicken run, all of which provided constant entertainment. The showers, loos, fresh water tap and waste water point are in the centre of the site. The loos (2) and showers (2) are trailer cabins and have a shared water boiler so hot taps and showers are delightfully warm. We really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely go again.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Took my 8 year old camping for the first time and she absolutely loved it. The owner was very friendly and took my daughter round to see and stroke all the animals, which were a huge hit. Honesty shop was very fairly priced and free use of a fire pit was brilliant. We will definitely be back and will make use of the paddle board hire because the river looked beautiful.

Disliked: Nothing!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Lovely campsite with clean toilets and hot showers, the resident animals were an added bonus and if you choose the top of the field you can be close to them to watch them go about their day, good location to Norwich and getting out and about in Norfolk, they don’t have elec hook up but there is an elec outlet at the shower cabin which we used to blow up our airbed (as it was elec and had no manual pump) site owner had great communication and it was easy to find all in all a great little site for a couple of days

Disliked: Nothing

Poppy primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: Really lovely campsite. - not overcrowded, we had plenty of space and the kids had loads of running around space. - toilets and showers were clean. - lovely to see the sheep, alpacas, and horses. - dog friendly. - honesty shop with a fire pit renting bit. - football/games field with balls. - short walk (20 mins to local pub). - really nice walk through woodland and meadows to the river, which had places to use canoes/kayaks/paddleboards. - very peaceful with lots of birds/wildlife. Safe from the road that goes past because of fencing and hedgerows. - kids could run around but easily be seen thanks to the way the site is laid out. - really friendly owner who made us feel welcome. We will definitely be going back!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike at all.

Local attractions

Being right on the Norfolk Broads, Two Jays is well-placed for a range of water activities – you can go fishing, sailing, or rent kayaks and canoes for adventures on the water… or leave the navigating up to someone else and opt for a boat trip instead. For activities on dry land, visit BeWILDerwood (10-minute drive), a forest park full of trails, treehouses, bridges, zipwires and slides. There’s more action at leisure and shopping complex Wroxham Barns (10 minutes), where there’s a kids' farm and funfair alongside boutiques, craft studios and eateries. If you’re heading to the coast, combine beach days with some animal spotting; there’s a zoo in Cromer (half an hour) and a SEA LIFE Centre at Great Yarmouth (40 minutes). There’s a bunch of parks nearby if you’re looking for big open spaces for pleasant ambles, picnics, and kids’ play areas. Try Waterloo Park (15 minutes), Catton Park (15 minutes), Earlham Park (half an hour) or Eaton Park (half an hour). For a bit of culture, visit the impressive Blickling Estate (15 minutes) and Felbrigg Hall, Gardens and Estate (25 minutes). Or combine a trip to Norwich (20 minutes) with a look at the cathedral and Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery.
