Site by the canal
The oxford canal
Site pitches

  • Deliberately basic adults-only site on a canalside Oxfordshire farm
  • A 15-minute drive from Banbury and 40 minutes from Oxford
  • Farm shop on site; access to the canal for fishing or watersports
If you owned a narrowboat, could there be any prettier a pastime than pulling up to a farm shop on the historic Oxford Canal? Don’t own a narrowboat just yet? Pull up for an adults-only stay (narrowboat not necessary…) at The Pig Place near Banbury, where groups and dogs are welcome and there's no limit to the number of furry friends that can accompany you. This deliberately basic site is on a working smallholding next to the Oxford Canal, complete with a farm shop where you can buy hot drinks, snacks and cake. The site received a premises licence in 2017 too, so it sells alcohol for sipping on or off site. Bring your camera to be on the tail of some smoking hot pics here: turn your gaze waterwards for photos of narrowboats drawing in to stock up at the farm shop. Facilities at The Pig Place are basic (it has several portable toilets but no showers), but the owners rightly say the attractions on and around the site more than make up for it: whether fishing at the canal (with your own licence) just adjacent to the farm or messing about on the water with your own kayak or paddleboard. There are also plenty of scenic local walks to set out onto, including the canal towpath.

What customers say

Quirky, adults-only spot on a peaceful canal. Spacious sites, friendly staff, and good food/drinks. Fire pits & live music add to the chill vibe. Downsides: basic loos (cleanliness/smell issues), road noise, uneven pitches, and perceived high cost. Pigs are a big plus!

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Friendly relaxed campsite. Lovely to have farm shop, bar and food van available. Great spot next to the canal.

Disliked Please get a toilet block. The portaloos are the only thing that lets this place down.

Primitive grass tent campsite (medium)

Liked No pigs,
Toilets cleaned regularly
Unbelievable full English breakfast from the onsite food vendor.
Good welcome with quick show around where things are!

Disliked Uneven ground.
No showers but aware there was none.
We went for supposed fishing but no swims to fish.
Awkward fishing between moored barges.
Not ideal.
If want fishing go elsewhere.
Otherwise ideal good value friendly place

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Lovely location for walking up and down the Oxford canal. There’s a little bar, food truck and small farm shop on site which is as a nice touch. Toilets were clean and sound. No showers and the running water was slow as it’s from a borehole, but didn’t bother us at all.

Disliked Probably only thing was no showers but we knew that before hand so didn’t bother us really but would probably be a nice touch

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Being near the canal for walks
Liked the enclosed dog exercise area.
The brief encounter i had with staff, the lady was friendly and helpful
Grey waste area was clean

Disliked No animals (the very reason I came back, I have to admit I did not read the updated description of the campsite)
Ground very uneven in places
Train noises, seemed to quieten through the night
Cafe not open
Bar not open
Limited ‘farm’ shop, unsure when it was open
Place is looking tired
Campsite computer system was not working, so I was not expected. Thankfully I had proof of my booking and all was well.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Beautiful location. I was hesitant after booking and then realising that there was no pigs on site anymore & some reviews said that nothing was open either. But….when arrived we greeted by a lovely young man in the reception shop, who showed us where everything was & what we needed to know. Lovely variety of things to buy in there from your essentials to drinks and meats. Also the Outside bar was open with seating looking over the canal. With this being an adults only site it was very peaceful, just what was needed for an overnight escape. Pretty grounds and a lovely canal walk close by

Disliked The only thing that put me off coming back here was the toilet situation.
These are unisex portaloos.
would be much better if they divided it

Liked Relaxed and laid back. Great that it’s a no kids site after 6pm.

Disliked The toilets are crap to pardon the pun. Would be so much better if there was a proper toilet block

Primitive grass tent campsite (medium)

Liked It’s a decent place, nice shop and friendly staff. We was greeted and shown around and felt at home. Loved the bar they have and the pig sty/ stable area. There was a little band playing pirate music! Great surprise

Disliked Toilets are portaloo’s and were full! The smell was horrendous. Unsure when they get emptied as we stayed one night

Local attractions

The Oxford Canal is one of the oldest mainline canals in England and has walkies all along its 77-mile towpath, passing some of the most scenic spots and villages in Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire. It’s mostly easy hoofing along the whole route with few hills: carve a slice into a day trip or afternoon amble. Pack a picnic (of bacon sarnies) and go to Banbury four miles away to tackle the modernised towpath walk from Banbury to Cropredy via the newly added glass bridge, waterworks gallery and museum spanning the canal along the way. A day at dramatic Stratford-upon-Avon should be on the cards in any holiday too.
