Fishing lake

  • Quiet, secluded and rural site on 10 acres of fenland
  • One well-stocked fishing lake
  • Shop, bus stop and local pub all within a few minutes' stroll
Peaceful and with great fishing is how the folk at Ashleigh Lakes sum their pleasant place up – if you're after angling in a quiet and secluded countryside location, bag it here. Family run, Ashleigh is a small, secluded and level site between Peterborough, Spalding and Wisbech in the Lincolnshire Fens. It has one catch and release fishing lake within a minute or two's walk, stuffed with roach and rudd as well as mirror, common and ghost carp. You can fish all the day – and night – long if you wish, either with a day fishing ticket or a 24-hour one; just make sure to bring a valid licence or pick one up at the village post office when you arrive. Two rods are allowed per person. This is a wildlife haven too if your tastes tend more towards nature spotting, with foxes, hares, rabbits, deer and many bird species all roaming or fluttering about... or if you'd just like to amble about or sunbathe, the hedgerows keep the site nicely sheltered from the Fenland winds. Around the region, Ashleigh is 25 minutes' drive from Spalding and Peterborough, 30 from Wisbech and 45 from the biggest nature reserve in the country at The Wash. Amenities include washing-up, toilet and shower facilities all in the corner of the site, together with a chemical disposal point. The village post office is 50 metres from Ashleigh's entrance, as is the local bus stop – although if you ask nicely/are a tad fatigued after a Fens day hiking or cycling, the driver will often drop you off right outside.

A peaceful, spacious site with friendly staff, especially Colin. Enjoy lovely lake views & great fishing! Grounds are tidy. Facilities are basic but clean. Some nettles & pub noise noted, but guests plan to return.

Primitive grass tent, travel trailer or trailer tent campsite

Liked Nice level ground, grass was nicely trimmed. Only stayed for one night so not too much I can say, I didn't make use of the fishing.

Disliked Toilet block could do with an update, the shower door was hanging off as I attempted to pull it closed.

Primitive grass tent, travel trailer or trailer tent campsite

Liked We were so lucky. When we arrived we spoke to the guy who ran the site and asked if we could pitch as close to the fishing lake as possible, he very kindly allowed us to pitch right on the bank with our car. This meant when everyone had finished fishing for the day, we got the ENTIRE lake and field to ourselves. It was idyllic. So peaceful and a lovely environment. They allowed us to stay until 4pm the next day to ensure we got as much fishing in as possible. The lake was very well stocked, my wife was landing fish within seconds. We will certainly be back again for a quick getaway and will bring our eldest who would love a go at fishing.

Disliked Not so much a dislike but the toilets and shower are dated but they were perfectly functional and certainly did not dampen our stay. I’ve seen worse toilets in some restaurants.
Also next to no phone signal but actually was quite nice to switch off for a few days and it’s The Fens so is to be expected.

Powered grass tent, travel trailer or trailer tent campsite

Liked Staff were very friendly and helpful. I was having trouble with our awning and they came over and helped. Pithes were level with plenty of room. A nice peaceful location.

Disliked Shower toilet block although clean was very tired looking. I was told that the shower block was going to be replaced soon.

Primitive grass tent, travel trailer or trailer tent campsite

Liked Nice quiet site - well maintained with clean bathrooms that were stocked and checked regularly. No problem with bugs - I had the tent open a lot of the time. Staff were really friendly and helpful - even going as far as helping me with charging (I didn't have an electric pitch) and helping me get to my next destination.

Liked The way out.

Disliked State of toilets and shower room, was told it was clean ( not sure they understand what clean means). Toilet door falling apart and interior light not functioning correctly. Chemical toilet disposal filthy. Separation of pitches not adhered to, people trying to pitch tent alongside our camper with less than 1 metre gap. No rescue equipment by fishing pool where children can and will play around there. IN THIS MOERN CAREFREE WORLD WE LIVE IN IS IT POSSIBLE TO ACTUALLY STAY ON A SITE WHERE YOU DONT HAVE TO BREATHE IN WACKY BACKY ALL DAY LONG

Liked Check in was easy and nice level grass pitches grass is cut regularly

Disliked Only 2 toilets & 2 showers really run down and dirty, shower cubicles covered in black mildew, the only cleaning of them we saw over the 5 days was by the campers,
Chemical toilet disposal is filthy enough to make you balk,
If you are going to fish don’t bother taking rods you just need a net the fish are fighting to get out in fact if you hook one you will get loads in your net

Local attractions

As it's the Fens, this is nicely level land around here, just the ticket for gentle walks and bike rides around the local area. As a first stop, amble or have a short pedal along to the Elizabethan Centre a third of a mile away, for bowls, badminton, a pool table or (and) nattering with locals over a cold pint. The local badminton team play most Mondays and Wednesdays and guests are most welcome to join in during their stay. By car, get along to Spalding for an extensive shopping session at the Springfield Shopping Outlet, followed by a wander and a rest around the Springfield Festival Gardens. Peterborough's well worth a day out too, for more shopping as well as strolls along the river, and Boston 40 minutes away is home to the 14th-century Boston Guildhall and a museum at the Maud Foster Tower Windmill.
