  • Immaculately kept site, family-run for over 30 years
  • Friendly and welcoming with outstanding views
  • Close to Gullivers Kingdom and 45 minutes' drive from Alton Towers
Pigs, ponies and proximity to top Peak District towns… farm the family out to Middlehills Farm Campsite. This is a mellow, peaceful and very friendly park that's been run by the Lomas family for over 30 years, set in 40 acres of countryside in the Peak District National Park and a quick drive from kiddie heaven Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock Bath. (Give them an even more heavenly holiday by an additional trip to Alton Towers, about 22 miles from your pitch.) Kids should be enthusiastically entertained by the chance to pet and give treats to the Middlehills pigs and ponies, and with the positively popular play park: owners' Nick and Liz's four-legged lot are often around to make pals with, and the play area is cunningly set near the pitches for grownups to keep a beady eye on proceedings. Facilities at Middlehills Farm are spotlessly kept and include a toilet and shower block (showers are subject to an extra charge, so remember to bring some coins along), a small shop selling camping equipment and basic bits, a chemical waste point and a washing-up area.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Very clean, lovely maintained fields, not massively bumpy etc. Slight slope but comfortable to deal with. Hire of fire pits. Amenities. Good choice of pitch spaces too. Kids loved playing area.

Disliked: Showers- Was aware of the 20p per minute charge but the payment machines are outside the cubicles, which isnt great when anyone can just walk in, but when the door opens to full view of half the campsite when someone does walk in, doesn't really give any privacy. Then it's not a very powerful shower, more of a trickle so need to buy more time in order to wash properly. Pot wash- signs stating use washing up bowl to not waste water, yet no bowl supplied, not even a plug for the sink and the water was boiling hot so water was wasted cos there was no way to work it when we had not thought to buy a bowl to bring.

From the manager: Hi, Im sorry you experienced problems with the showers and pot washing. The meters in the top block have a minute delay after you have put your money in which gives you time to get in the shower, the bottom block starts straight away but does tell you this, we cant have the meteres in the showers due to the electrics but neither are in full view of the campsite so dont understand your point ? If we didnt have them then people spend so long in the shower they use all the hot water and then people complain as its run out. Pot washing bowls are available to buy in the shop, using them stops the waste of water we do provide plugs but annoying people keep pinching them, and we will check the water temperature, thankyou.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Clean toilets Friendly staff Great little onsite shop Good arrival/leaving times Great that the pitch isn't to restricted a size Loved the animals wandering around (even the chicken pinching the food by the tent) Great park for the kids Lovely scenery Close drive to Matlock Bath Handy to have access to a fridge onsite also for those little bits

Disliked: One moaning camper next to us asking us to turn our already quiet music at 3pm...due to her having a headache! 🫣 But no negatives to the actual site itself. WiFi signal kept dipping out.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Plenty of space for children to play freely. Massive area for pitching without constraints. Clean facilities always available even though it was a busy bank holiday. Lady in the shop was lovely and chatting.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike, good basic site with clean facilities and lots of space for play and socializing.

Local attractions

After you've taken the kids around Gullivers Kingdom and Alton Towers (that'll be the first three or four days of the holiday sorted), set aside some time for the grand halls and houses in the region, which should be seen firstly because they're fab, and secondly because these days out will be a sedate difference to white-knuckled days out at local theme parks. The knowledgeable team at Middlehills Farm insist that Chatsworth House is a must, and so should you say too, for spectacular gardens even the kids will go gaga for, a decent play area and a farm park for more petting. Bonus: the surrounding 1000-acre park is free to roam around all year round. Nearby Haddon Hall just outside Bakewell is also a sweet treat: film fans and goggleboxers might recognise its setting from the likes of Jane Eyre, Elizabeth and The Princess Bride (the gardens here are pretty splendid too). To tramp around old towns, Matlock, Buxton, Bakewell and Ashbourne are all within easy driving distance of Middlehills Farm – Peak District eats and other souvenirs should be picked up in each. The farm team has plenty more info on the local area in the site reception, but also quickly recommended are walks and watersports around/on nearby Carsington Water, and examining the caves and caverns of the Heights of Abraham from a cable car at High Tor.
