  • Grass pitches on a farm overlooking Arnfield Reservoir, Derbyshire
  • On the Trans Pennine Trail and 10 minutes’ drive from the Pennine Way
  • Walking and cycling accessible from the site; café-bar on site
Keen to get some hiking in? Crossgate Farm Campsite may be just the spot for you. Set on a working farm with views over Arnfield Reservoir and Longdendale on the outskirts of Tintwistle, Derbyshire, this is a smashing place for walkers and bikers, as guests have direct access to the Trans Pennine Trail, the Pennine Bridleway and Pennine Cycleway Route 68 from the site. Pick-up from public transport can also be arranged so you don’t need to worry about bringing a car. You can pitch up pretty much anywhere you want in the slightly sloping camping field, and while dogs are welcome on your Derbyshire farm stay, please keep them on a lead around the cattle. You’ll also probably be joined at some stage by the free-range chicks, guinea fowls and peacocks. Amenities-wise, the site has toilets and showers with separate male and female facilities. There is a café-bar on site, but if you prefer to do your own meal prep, barbecues are permitted on the camping field (bring your own gear). The village of Hollingworth (five minutes’ drive) has a small convenience store as well as pubs and takeaways.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The views of the lake and the mountains and the animals.
I also loved the peace and tranquility

Disliked: Same as everyone else complaints, the toilets absolutely disgusting all full of feaces no flushers, sinks didn’t work no water . Luckily I had my own changing and toilet tent, I’d advise everyone else to do the same take your own don’t use. 3 years is disgusting it’s un hygienic. Just replace them before someone gets ill. £15 a night too much , some cheaper with clean toilets .

From the manager: Hi Kim,

Yes we have provided camping for 3 years, but only as a pop-up campsite. Legally, as a pop-up, we are only allowed to open 28 days or 14 weekends a year. 28 days does not justify spending £16,000 on a toilet block. This is the first year we have had planning permission to open for longer and not been restricted to 28 days, but we did not have time to get toilets installed before the start of the season.

We will now have to apply for planning permission for a toilet block. It really isnt as easy as you think to set a camping business up.

Most music festivals and summer shows find portaloos perfectly acceptable and as far as I am aware nobody has contracted anything more than an offended nose, we did try to check toilets regularly.

The sinks in the portaloos are inadequate, so we did provide a second sink outside the toilets and also there is a hand wash basin with warm water in the temporary shower trailer.

Kind regards,
Deborah.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Great site with the most helpful and friendly staff. Fabulous views.
Cafe/bar in the converted barn was great. Tasty and hearty breakfast.
Lovely walks, we arrived when the big yellow thing in the sky was shining, so everything looked lush and green. The waterfall walk is a must. Ask at the cafe for directions.
Rain followed during the night and the morning making it a tad difficult to get up the sloping field in our campers. Will forward park in the field near the exit tracks next visit, just incase of rain.
Overall a fantastic site!

Liked: In such an amazing location, easy to find and set up once arrived! The animals were such a plus, so friendly too. Debby was amazing and helped us locate the 7 falls.

Disliked: Portable toilets as they had not been flushed easily , very blocked. However they were not unclean.

Liked: Nice café, it's a converted barn. They had English breakfasts and lots more.

Disliked: Would of been nice to have a toilet block, porta loos aren't the best

From the manager: Hi,
It is our plan to do a toilet block this closed season.
We have only been a pop-up for the last 3 years, so 28 days didn't warrant the outlay of a toilet block.
We didn't expect to be so popular. Check back next year for our upgrades.

Local attractions

There’s bike hire in Hadfield (five minutes’ drive) for cyclists keen to embark on the Pennine Cycleway Route 68, which can be accessed from the camping field along with the Pennine Bridleway and Trans Pennine Trail. There is a connection to the Pennine Way at Torside Reservoir (10 minutes). If you’re just not that into the long-distance, serious hiking stuff, you can still get plenty of bracing Derbyshire air fishing at Arnfield Fly Fishery (five minutes’ walk), practising your swing on 18-hole golf courses (20 minutes) and exploring Pennine trails on horseback (15 minutes). Birdwatchers might get lucky and see curlews and red grouse flitting around the water at Dove Stone Nature Reserve (25 minutes), or woodpeckers, long-tailed tits and owls at Eastwood Nature Reserve (10 minutes). Keep an eye out for hares, red grouse and warblers as you circumnavigate Ladybower Reservoir (half an hour), or see if you can spot harriers high above rugged Kinder Scout (50 minutes).
