  • Family park three miles from the Peak District town of Ashbourne
  • Seven and a half miles from Alton Towers
  • Indoor pool, licensed shop and picnic area
If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne. For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail, and it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers. More? It's also been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie… Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera. Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside. Other facilities at the park include a licensed shop, picnic area, launderette, covered washing-up areas, showers, toilets and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop…

Clean, well-kept site with great facilities, loved by families for the play area & pool. Perfect for walks/cycling on the Tissington Trail. Some noted distance to restrooms & occasional cleanliness/booking issues. Glamping pods w/ en-suites are a hit.

Camping pod

Liked Had a call to say our camp pod was ready at 2.45pm which was a bonus . Lovely reception when we arrived, everything was straightforward. Camp pod was spotless. Lovely shower en suite.
Didn’t use pool but looked lovey . Play area for children looked fab. Dog walk area was a little hidden gem. We walked straight into the Tissington trail to Ashbourne one evening then to Tissington village the next. Will be going back for sure.

Disliked Just to note, the pub that is walkable distance doesn’t open on a Monday and Tuesday! ☹️

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Nothing

Disliked We booked a one-night stay at this campsite, choosing the non-electric tent pitch. Our main reason for selecting this place—despite significantly higher prices compared to other campsites in the same area—was the swimming pool, which looked great in the photos and seemed like a perfect way to relax during our short trip with kids.

However, our experience was extremely disappointing from the moment we arrived. We checked in around 1 PM and immediately asked to book a slot for the pool. We were told that both days were fully booked and there was no possibility to access the pool at all during our stay. I explained that the only reason we chose this expensive site (others in the area cost one-third the price) was the pool, and that without access to it, the price simply made no sense. Still, we were told no slots were available.
Eventually, we were allowed to use the pool for one hour after our check-out time, which is hardly what we paid for. By then, we were already packed and ready to leave

We tried to cancel the booking once we found out about the pool situation, but they refused. No flexibility, no understanding, no willingness to acknowledge that what they advertised was not available during our stay.

In addition to that, the non-electric pitch we stayed at was located very far from the restrooms. Walking there—especially at night—was inconvenient and unpleasant. To make things worse, the toilets were disgusting in the morning. They were clearly not cleaned or maintained regularly, which is unacceptable for a site charging premium prices.

Overall, this was the worst camping experience we’ve ever had.

We will not be returning and cannot recommend this site to anyone.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Location was good .

Disliked There was only one toilet, and it was about a ten-minute walk to the tent area. If you don't make a reservation for the pool in advance, you won't be able to find a spot; it's small. Also, the toilets weren't clean. Frankly, I don't plan on using them again. Finding staff was nearly impossible.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked From arrival you notice how immaculately clean and well kept the grounds are.
We arrived and were able to choose where we pitched our tent at the field called 'Peak Park' it is a beautiful spot.
It was good to see that most visitors respected the quiet time between 11pm and 7am.
How much better can you get, having your own access onto the Tissington Trail.
Clean and tidy shower cubicles.
Plenty of little bins.

Disliked We had extended family camping with us for the weekend, the only thing the park needs to think about is parking because there was a static holiday home parked across 4-5 parking spaces near the children's area which should've been available for guests staying there.

Camping pod

Liked Nice and clean park. Massive park for the kids to play on. Small shop on site, prices as expected for a camping shop. Swimming pool on site, only a pool no slides or life guards on site. Only 24 allowed at a time so does get booked up quickly. Stayed in a camping pod, nice and clean.

Disliked The coming pods hold heat, like alot of heat. No air-con. Travelling with a baby we had fans but it didnt make a difference, staff did not want to help when I asked for an extra cooling device, I was told "everywhere gets muggy and over hot when camping in this heat'. One lady on reception/shop was not very professional and came across very rude, not wanting to help.

Camping pod

Liked Pods were perfect in size with table and fold up chairs. Loved the shower room to the back of the pod just for our pod and the shared sink, we had a parking bay that was close to the pod without being parked right outside. Quiet well spaced out site with a few camping spots with electric hook up which I will definitely be back to use. Easy book in and return for the keys. Didn't use the shop but it looked well stocked. Would definitely recommend this site, very tidy and well maintained. Perfect spot to sit and watch sunset.

Disliked Lack of wifi

Liked Great site, well maintained and perfectly placed for exploring the Peak District. The ablutions were spotless and the pool equally so. The children’s park was an added bonus. We look forward to returning soon.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Site is set up really well and kept very clean. Great wc/shower facilities. Staff were really helpful and friendly. Didn’t use the pool but the fact it has one will bring us back for sure.
Kids loved the playground.

Disliked WC & shower facilities nearer the tent pitches would be ideal.
The non-electric pitches are on a sloping field. Just makes pitch selection a bit tricky when arriving later in the day.

Local attractions

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park. You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak. More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at the Peak District Mining Museum at Matlock. Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, an indoor riding school, and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
