  • Peaceful park near the Peak District
  • Easy access to Derby and Nottingham; two pubs five minutes' walk away
  • New toilet and shower block kept to immaculate standards
What a peaceful park this is for Peak District hols – on 11 acres of quiet woodland near the national park and set deep in the Derbyshire countryside with picnic areas peppered all around. And what a pleasing park this is for those who insist on amenities being immaculate and up to date – the toilet and shower block comes with disabled access, baby changing and showers with hot and cold water, and is kept in tiptop condition at all times by the friendly site team. Riddings Wood Holiday Park is a rural park but with easy access to urban centres like Derby and Nottingham as well as to the hikes, bike rides and canters of the Peak District. (If you're a bit bamboozled as to what to do first, have a look at the tourist info point in reception or ask the team for tips.) Campfires are allowed if you need a bit of warming upon return. And finally, what a pint-friendly site Riddings Wood is too – the only thatched-roof pub in Derbyshire, Moulders Arms (aka The Thack), is a short stroll away; and the Seven Stars, a community pub, is just across the road. Cheers…

Liked Big site, plenty of room and playground for kids to play with. Anoki curry house arriving to deliver curries is a genius move!

Disliked No where near enough toilet and shower facilities for the amount of people there, literally queueing to use showers & toilets at times. Shower water was cold most the time, to get a hot shower you had to get up extra earlier or wait until the afternoon or evening. There was another toilet/shower block on site, but was out of order and didn’t smell great, luckily wasn’t near it.

The surrounding area was not exactly picturesque, in fact dilapidated would be a better description.

Safe to say, will not be booking here again.

Liked The gentleman booking me in, very friendly

Disliked Only 1 toilet block, 4 showers and 5 toilets for as i quote "we have booked in 89 pitches for this weekend "by the lady warden
The water was cold when going for shower at 8am in the morning. Hand dryers didn't work, not always toilet rolls in the toilets. Very busy in there. Road was gravel and very uneven . Looked packed .

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Absolutely lovely campsite. The facilities were clean and well kept. We were abit apprehensive reading the reviews during busy periods regarding the cleanliness and lack of facilities, however they campsite were full and did not find we were queuing to use the toilets or showers so please ignore these comments.
It really is a family friendly site, great park and a lovely woodland access from the campsite which added to the experience. The reviews stated it was packed like sardine but it only appeared this way if there were large groups and it was meant to be this way, we were at the bottom field with the park and it was more than spacious.

Disliked The only downside is the toilets are abit of a trek if your in that bottom field and would benefit using the old toilet facilities again for those at the bottom as it was a hindrance and perhaps a water station at the bottom. Wouldn't stop me booking again though! We loved it

Local attractions

To the Peak! The Peak District National Park is but a short drive from Riddings Wood Holiday Park, and has a bit of what you fancy for all ages and inclinations. If you're in the area to hike, there are more Peak District trails than you can shake a (walking) stick at, from the shorter treks of seven or so miles around the upper Dove Valley and Pilsbury Castle, to long-distance paths like the Limestone Way (46 miles), the Derwent Valley Heritage Way (55 miles) or the Peak District parts of the Pennine Way, running for 268 miles from the northern Peak District to just inside the Scottish border. Climbers and cavers also delve into all things Peak: thousands of routes for all abilities are all over the park for climbers, including Burcen Edge for beginners and more hair-raising ascents like Debauchery and Mad Dogs and Englishmen for the severely experienced. If you're of a cavernous disposition, make your way to the village of Castleton and its four show caves, Blue John, the Peak, Treak Cliff and Speedwell Cavern with underground boat trip. Matlock Bath has a cable car to take adventurers to limestone caverns The Heights of Abraham, and Poole's Cavern near Buxton has vast caves to explore before an above-surface walk around Buxton Country Park. Other attractions like Chatsworth House and Gardens and the old Crich Tramway are to hand for the historically-minded, alongside old Peak District villages and market towns for tearooms, restaurants, family pubs and lots of shopping: try Buxton, Ashbourne and Bakewell to start you off. Back at Matlock Bath, let the kids go large at the rides and attractions of theme and play park Gullivers Kingdom for ages two to 13; the 600-acre Matlock Farm Park nearby should keep them busy for a bit too.
