  • No-frills farm campsite 10 minutes’ drive from Winnersh in Berkshire
  • LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort half an hour’s drive; Thorpe Park 45 minutes
  • Camping field bounded by woodland; two pubs within five minutes’ drive
When you’re looking for a slice of country living under canvas, but equally well can’t face pottering down too many country lanes, Ellis' Hill Farm Campsite will suit you very well. At 10 minutes’ drive from Winnersh in Berkshire, this peaceful farm site is close to all the major road networks. Even better news – for the kids if not your pocket – it’s within half an hour by car of family attractions like LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort and Beale Wildlife Park. Just double check the directions on your way to this splendid place, as Satnavs may direct you through a ford and you don't want to end up with a soggy bottom. Sheltered by tall trees, the camping field is mostly level, but has a few undulations. You’ll need sturdy footwear, and as it’s only mown once a year, if you’re a repeat visitor you’ll see how the meadow grows and changes through the seasons. Also be aware that there’s no electricity to hand, so bring torches for wandering around your pitch after dark. The surrounding woodland is a fascinating habitat for wildlife. Don’t be surprised if you encounter the odd deer or sneaky fox – just please make sure your food is stored away from all animal foragers. Barbecues are allowed on site, but of course you can also sneak off to the two local pubs (both around five minutes’ drive) for a pint and helpings of comfort food.

Primitive cement/asphalt tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: I really enjoyed my stay at Ellis' Hill farm campsite. Even though I was there for one night splitting a journey, I was able to soak up the wildlife and surrounding woodland. I had free rein of where I wanted to pitch which was wonderful, I pitched up in a secluded part of the campsite and watched a flock of deer grazing just across from me over the evening. I could have a fire and was to able purchase some fine firewood as I was greeted by friendly host Kevin. It was a very peaceful area and just what I needed for a good sleep. Unfortunately I encountered a flat battery when I was leaving, but thankfully after popping into the shop and explaining my situation, Kevin and Graham were very helpful and assisted me in jump starting. Thank you very much for a pleasant stay, I will certainly stop off again if I need a lovely chilled stay.

Primitive grass and earth travel trailer campsite

Liked: We had a friendly welcome and the place was very quiet which was great. There was a nice 20 min path walk to the nearest town with a lovely pub serving food, nice looking pizzeria and a Londis if we would have needed to stock up on anything. The campsite is very basic but this was what we were looking for.

Primitive grass and earth travel trailer campsite

Liked: Location is great for me visiting family in Reading, arrived to a wagging welcome from Digger the dog who regularly does the rounds and checks in on all campers! Was very quiet first 2 nights with more campers arriving at the weekend. So wonderful to wake up to a beautiful sunrise with deer in the field! Lovely local woodland walks, great little cafe and shop and Kevin was very helpful. Was able to buy wood for fire pit. Toilet facilities are basic, no showers but I knew that and was fine. Just what I needed after a busy few days in the city centre.

Disliked: Planes overhead but you can’t help that! Managed to get parked fairly level but might need chocks for hardstanding area.

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely, positive review.

Digger the dog certainly keeps a watchful eye on our guests (and their snacks)

The big commercial aircraft can sometimes be a bit irritating, but we also get quite a few interesting heritage planes flying overhead from time to time - worth looking out for!

As soon as the ground dries out, it should be possible to drive camper vans and caravans onto the field. We know that campers prefer this, but we try to accommodate guests even in challenging conditions. We can always help with levelling vehicles if need be, but bringing chocks is very good advice.

We really look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Liked: We recently visited this campsite for our first-ever camping trip—crazy, right? Despite the poor weather, we had an amazing experience! The owners were incredibly kind and welcoming. They not only guided us to the best spot to pitch our tent but also, seeing how cold we were, generously gave us some firewood. Their hospitality made all the difference. We’ll definitely be coming back!

Route directions

Please make sure that you use Gravelpit Hill Lane to access the site. Satnav devices often suggest Ellis’ Hill as the best route. Please don’t come this way. There is a ford which is sometimes quite deep. You need to be on the B3030 (Arborfield to Twyford or vice versa) to reach the site. Drive to the top of Gravelpit Hill Lane, and then turn right. The farm is a few hundred yards along on the left. What3words: blip.reverted.cutback.
