  • Shaded site on the banks of the Aube
  • Spectacular and peaceful setting around a 19th-century dovecot
  • Direct river access, canoe hire, playground and indoor lounge
A riverside site on a 19th-century French estate… sound boastful enough yet? Get ready to get smug with a stay at Domaine Le Colombier on the banks of the Aube, in the fizzingly fab region of Champagne-Ardenne. As you'll see from the pics, this is a lushly viewsome place, green and flower-filled with loads of room for stretching out and serious idling. And as you might gather from the name, there's a dovecot on site too: settle down beside it for a picnic to see how many pigeons you can spy flitting in and out of the colombier holes… Domaine Le Colombier is a mere minute's meander from the Aube department village of Dienville, in a Champagne-Ardenne setting between Paris and Strasbourg. It has direct access to the river for active days canoeing and swimming; hire a canoe from the team for serene hours drifting along the water. Facilities include a well-equipped playground with trampoline, along with an indoor lounge with TV, dartboard, table football and squishy sofas. Bakeries and restaurants are within easy strolling distance.

Power optional grass site (riverside)

Liked: Everything. This is without doubt the nicest campsite I have ever stayed in.
The toilets and showers are like something you would find in a 5 star hotel, with gentle lights and music.
There is a lovely decking area with deck chairs, right next to a gently flowing stream which was perfect for our dogs to swim in to cool down on a hot day.
Also plenty of bars and restaurants within easy walking distance. And a boulangerie and patisserie just outside the site for your fresh bread and cakes in the morning.
I will definitely come back

Power optional grass site

Liked: The area that it is located is magnificent with bakery and local cafe + resteraunt. The campsite itself is perfect with facilities that would make a spa jealous. There is also lots for kids (and adults) to do there including ping pong, kayaking and bike riding to name a few. The gentleman at reception was extremely pleasant and knowledgeable of the local area. Would recommend trying the local champagne sole there as well.

Liked: Everything! The host was welcoming and provided useful suggestions of things to do. Pitches were a decent size, level, and private, the site felt friendly, and bathrooms were beautiful - modern, spotless, and loved the classical music!

Power optional grass site (riverside)

Liked: Location, Site, Pitches, Staff and facilities.
The hosts were friendly, informative and knowledgeable. Their small shop held most essentials.
Dienville and surrounding villages are pretty and quirky with strong links to Napoleon. One part of a battle was fought over Dienville Bridge.
The site is spacious with segregated, mainly level pitches. On arrival, we were invited to walk round and choose our own spot.
Sanitary facilities and shower were second to none. Even piped music when you enter.
Although not used, the play facilities for children (4 - 12) were fabulous. My youngest grandson (5) would have loved it.
While we were there, the site had been voted No 1 in NE France and No 15 of the 4500 campsites in the whole of France. Well deserved and highly recommended.

Power optional grass site (riverside)

Liked: Gorgeous facilities - have never showered, washed up or visited the loo in such luxury! Love the ‘no shoes’ rule and also the spa-like music. Beautiful building/courtyard and proximity to lovely village and church. V helpful lady in restaurant - spoke very good English. Wonderful netted play area for children. Handy location en route back to Calais.

Disliked: My shower water could have been warmer (husband’s was fine) - and he (a light sleeper) didn’t like the church clock tower bell chiming through the night.

Local attractions

The lush waters of the Aube are right to hand from the site for swimming, paddling and canoeing, but if you seek yet more watery times it's an easy 10-minute drive to the Aube reservoir and its two lakes, Amance and Temple. Make for Lac d'Amance for watersports including jetskiing and motorboating (this is the biggest watersports lake this close to Paris), and to Temple for birdwatching, fishing and a more peaceful vibe; motorboats aren't allowed on this part of the reservoir. The lakes are part of the woodland and water landscapes of the Orient Forest Regional Natural Park (Lac d'Orient, 25 minutes' drive from Domaine Le Colombier, is the park's third lake). A 42-kilometre bike path weaves through the trees around all three lakes for scenic rides, followed by a lengthy laze on one of the three sandy beaches of Lac d'Orient, the park's biggest. By car, Aube department capital and ancient town Troyes is 40 minutes' drive away, straight through the forest. Or give the kids a splendid day out by driving south for 15 minutes instead, to arrive at the Nigloland amusement park, one of the most visited in France.
