- Family-friendly Dordogne site 10 minutes’ walk from Girac in the Lot
- Rocamadour 35 minutes’ drive and the Gouffre de Padirac 20 minutes
- Dordogne river beach, a pool with waterslide and sporting activities
A 10-minute walk from Girac and edging the Dordogne River between Rocamadour and Padirac in the Lot, Camping Les Chalets sur la Dordogne is a welcoming, family-friendly site with bags of amenities and activities to keep everyone happy.
The campsite has a heated pool and waterslide that open in July and August. You don’t have to move too far to find the snack bar (mid-May to mid-September), as it’s right by the pool, and there’s also a more formal restaurant open in high season – handily, takeaways can be ordered from both venues.
Although there’s no kids’ club, that’s no hardship as there are activities here for all ages. You may well be hard-pushed to fit in pool and table football, the electric circuit for quad bikes, games of pétanque and volleyball, football or basketball… and that’s without even mentioning the mini-golf course.
There’s plenty to do on the river too; you can swim off the pebble beach, paddle downstream by canoe or go fishing – all in all the chances are you will never be without something to do.
A modern shower block and a laundry room with washing and drying machines completes the roster of facilities.

Local attractions
The Dordogne region has lots of storied corners to explore; maybe start your discoveries at Rocamadour (35 minutes’ drive), a medieval village clinging to a steep cliffside where you can visit the revered Back Madonna statue in Chapelle Notre-Dame before stocking up on locally made lavender soaps in the top-quality gift shops.
Autoire (15 minutes) is another gorgeous village with a medieval centre lined with half-timbered houses. Close by is the stunning Cascade d’Autoire (20 minutes), reached by a short hike through woodland. Castelnaud-la-Chapelle (an hour and 10 minutes) is home of an imposing medieval château with displays of weaponry and armour.
To see nature at its most spectacular, make for the Gouffre de Padirac (20 minutes), a vast cave complex that you can explore on foot or by wooden boat. There are more subterranean adventures to be had at Lacave (40 minutes), where a mini-train takes you through the underground labyrinth of tunnels, and the Grottes de Presque (15 minutes), packed with other-worldly limestone formations.
