  • Scenic orchard site on a Norfolk farm
  • Half an hour from Thetford Forest and 50 minutes from Norwich
  • Craft courses and farm shop selling honey, bread and veg
In need of a peaceful getaway that lets you unwind? Guests should thread their way along to Brakehill Lodge Farm, a family-friendly orchard site on a Norfolk farm half an hour’s drive from Thetford. With a whole farm to explore, there are scenic walks to take and lengthy bike rides to make, and the peace and quiet to sit down and finally finish that book that’s been taking up space on the nightstand… If switching off completely doesn’t quite fit the bill, never fear: the site regularly runs a whole host of craft courses, from soap and candle making to beekeeping (just remember to ask ahead about what will be running during your stay). The site is also home to a woodfired pizza oven – just let the site team know if you want to join in and fresh pizza and salad will be ready for your arrival. The site’s also within half an hour of Thetford Forest, putting guests within easy reach of lots of walks, mountain biking trails and the long-distance Peddars Way. All of that might be hungry work it's handy that there’s a small shop in the farmhouse back on site where honey, homemade bread and homegrown veg can be picked up.

Local attractions

Attention all fishing fans angling for a real catch of a getaway: will proximity to the well-stocked and spectacularly scenic Loch Neaton fishing lake (a mere 10-minute drive from base) prove to be enough of a lure? Claim yourself a corner of riverbank and cast a line to try and land carp, bream, perch, roach, rudd, tench or pike in a lucky catch. Not everyone’s a fan of quiet afternoons with rod and reel, of course. Not to worry, there's plenty more around… The Norfolk coast is about an hour’s drive away – head to Holkham beach for swimming and sandy strolls, or make Great Yarmouth the target if the family likes its beaches with a side order of zoo, aquarium, model village, pleasure pier and casino. History hounds will be well-served hereabouts. The market town of Hingham is 15 minutes from the site and is chock-full of stunning Georgian architecture to gaze upon, and the spectacular moated Oxburgh Hall is half an hour away. Prefer to be nosing around in the much more distant past? The Neolithic flint mine Grime’s Graves is well worth a pitstop. Anyone needing a day of shopping and culture should get in the car for the 50-minute drive to Norwich city centre to explore England’s biggest six-day indoor market and check some of the Norwich 12 (the city’s most iconic buildings) off the list.
