Take your touristy self to Tourist Farm Hribar in northern Slovenia for a peaceful, friendly setting in a green, spacious and rural orchard… and close to some of the country's most spectacular attractions like the lakes of Bled and Bohinj and the handsome old urban settlements of Radovljica and Ljubljana: all are very much must-sees. The farm is in a roomy orchard, on the edge of the village of Brezje in Slovenia's Gorenjska area, 15 minutes' drive from spectacular and world-famed Lake Bled and half an hour from the country's fab capital Ljubljana. For outdoor adventures, it's in the foothills of the Karavanke mountains close to the border with Austria for hiking, mountain biking and climbing, and two kilometres from the Sava river for rafting and riverside horse riding. The basic but well-kept amenities include clean and spacious washrooms with toilets and hot showers, as well as a small launderette and a guest kitchen with fridge, cooker, table and chairs. Guests are welcome to amble off to forage fruit from the orchard and veg from the farm allotment to add to their meals: just ask the amiable team in advance.

Liked: Fabulous greeting and informative on arrival, nice shower and short walk (15 minutes) to local pub that served fab pizza

Disliked: WiFi didn’t work in the van in first place we hooked up at so we moved and all worked fine, probably wouldn’t have been able to move if we were at peek season

Liked: Der Garten ist idyllisch gelegen und sehr gepflegt, nicht zu groß und hat eine wirklich schöne, ruhige und von Rücksicht geprägte Atmosphäre. Die sanitären Anlagen sind sehr sauber und man kann schöne Ausflüge in die Umgebung machen.

Disliked: Wir hatten eine ganze Woche mit dem Zelt gebucht, weil wir dort im Grünen entspannen wollten. Was aber durch den Lärm der Autobahn unmöglich war. Diese ständige 'Begleitmusik' sollte eigentlich auf der Homepage kommuniziert werden. Für 1 - 2 Nächte, wenn man auf der Durchreise ist oder nur kurz was in der Gegend unternehmen will, geht das, aber nicht als längerfristiger Urlaubsort.
Wir haben den Aufenhalt nach 3 Nächten von geplanten 7 abgebrochen, weil das einfach zuviel war.

Liked: The host family was lovely and the little village was nice. The site itself was picturesque.

Disliked: It’s quite far to the toilets and there are more for men than women. There is road noise, but I slept with ear plugs and it was no problem.

Liked: Very friendly owner. Pitches were flat, you could choose where you wanted to camp. Facilities were clean and looked newly built. Location was good, very close to Bled.

Disliked: It’s quite expensive for what it is, only take cash for payment.

Route directions

From the main highway (Ljubljana - Jesenice), take the exit to Brezje and turn left towards Brezje. When you reach Brezje, take the road on the right. Follow the road and you will pass by the parking lot, the fire station and the post office. At the end of the road, turn right and follow the road for another 300-400 metres. When you approach a small residential parking lot, turn left. There is also a small sign that reads Turistična kmetija Hribar on the left. You will come to an intersection - drive straight, through the iron gate, and you've reached the site. In case you do miss the site and drive a bit too far, you will see a farm on the left. If you manage to miss that as well, the road will try to lead you downhill. You shouldn't go downhill - if you do, that's a clear sign that you've missed the site. If you need further directions to find the site you can always call the site using the contact details on the booking form and the owners will be happy to assist you. Note: Do not use GPS to reach this area.

Local attractions

Tourist Farm Hribar is in the small village of Brezje, famed as a spiritual healing place and with a basilica that attracts tens of thousands of pilgrims each year. More peaceful times can be had at the medieval town of Radovljica, a few minutes' drive from Brezje, which has 15th- and 16th-century houses to see, the Sivec House art gallery to browse, and a gingerbread workshop space where you can see the sweet treats taking shape. Spectacular Bled, with its lake, castle and teeny island, is 15 minutes' drive away and Lake Bohinj, the biggest lake in Slovenia, is within half an hour. Both lakes are top spots for swimming, cycling, kayaking, hiking and horse riding on and around their waters: make for Bohinj if you want a somewhat quieter vibe than Bled. Other outdoorsy days include hiking and mountain biking around the many paths of the surrounding Karavanke mountains, or hiking the educational trail around Vintgar Gorge near Bled to a bridge overlooking the Šum waterfall. Ljubljana is half an hour's drive away, or an hour and 10 minutes by bus from Brezje: take a boat trip along the river, see the sights from Ljubljana Castle, visit the city's many excellent museums or pootle around the Central Market to sample sublime Slovenian food.
