  • In a rural peaceful area with easy access to shops and local pubs
  • Orchard walks with stunning views of Somerset
  • In a 12-acre orchard; restaurant 200 yards away and pub within a mile
Somerset camping… even the phrase sounds peaceful. Add in an orchard and – well, all is sorted for peaceful Somerset stays. (And spectacular views too, of course.) West Down Orchard Touring and Camping Park is a family-run site set deep in green Somerset countryside, in a 12-acre orchard with those spectacular views. This is the place to settle for rest, relaxation and splendid walks throughout the nearby farmland and countryside lanes; dogs are welcome on site too. Pitches here drain well even in heavy rain, to suit stays in all weathers, and are generously sized with plenty of room around. The park has a large and up-to-date facilities block with separate ladies' and gents' areas and free hot showers, and a launderette with washing machine and tumble dryer. The small on-site shop stocks daily essentials, a restaurant is just down the road and the local pub is a mile away.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Enjoyed the fact that we were able to park up a little further away from everyone is our child wouldn't annoy them.

Leon the park warden is a sound guy.

We needed a night stop on our way travelling and this filled it perfectly.

Nice hot showers. Some bits and bobs of needed there if you forgot them. Would stay again.

Disliked Nothing really.

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Fantastic site, very well maintained and cared for. The staff are so friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble and they will go out of their way to offer help. I was on my own with my son and struggling with the rent (it was new and I should have tried it at home first!) they offered to help and got me sorted out in no time. The washing facilities are fantastic, well maintained and the complimentary shower gel and toiletries makes it feel homely. Everything has been thought through, even with seats in the showers to towel holders! The site was quiet and peaceful and even though it rained they are correct with the quick drainage, we didn’t have any problems at all. The lovely guy running it offered us some advice about where to visit and we turned a chill out day into an even chiller day at the beach full of memories.

Disliked Not a dislike, however when you open the main toilet door which was generally open, anyone can see in, so when you’ve finished your shower and want to lean out to grab more clothes, the main door is open. Even when I shut it, other guests left it open. A small sign to ask people to shut the door if someone is in the shower would be perfect to retain modesty!!! As I said, not a dislike, just a small tweak.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Great location and lovely welcome. Simon very kindly put us on a hard standing as opposed to the grass pitch we had originally booked. The toilet facilities were excellent and the whole place was very peaceful. We stayed for 1 night en route to Cornwall and the site served our purposes perfectly. No hesitation in coming back ❤️

Local attractions

Although it's in a peaceful rural spot, West Down Orchard Touring and Camping Park has easy access to local shops and pubs, and to a good range of attractions in Somerset and down over the border into Dorset. Ilminster, recommended by the West Down owners as one of the finest small market towns in south Somerset, is five miles away. Historic types have the Elizabethan mansion and surrounding gardens of the National Trust-managed Montacute House to wander five miles from base, and the Fleet Air Arm Museum nine miles away, telling the tale of British naval aviation. If engines get you humming, over 400 cars and motorcycles and a collection of other automobilia are at the Haynes International Motor Museum 16 miles away. Glastonbury and its Tor are 18 miles from the site; if you fancy beach, coast and fossil foraging, Lyme Regis is about 20 minutes' drive away.
