Right next to a splendid beach on Mersea Island, and within easy strolling distance of cafés, pubs, restaurants and shops in the town of West Mersea, West Mersea Holiday Park is in a real cracker of an Essex location. Is this an island or not quite? Well, it all rather depends on when you visit – for the vast majority of the time it’s actually connected to the mainland, but when the tide rolls in it briefly transforms into an island that’s completely cut off. It’s a fine place to visit whether it’s in full-on island mode or not: there are some tiptop coastal views to be admired from the park and it’s close to the Blackwater Estuary, a nature reserve that’s particularly popular with migrating seabirds (and the birdwatchers who set out to spy them). With that coastline also comes easy access to watersports (sailors, windsurfers and kitesurfers will all find plenty to amuse nearby) and oodles of tasty seafood. Sole, mullet, herring, bass, skate and cod are all frequently hooked out of the ocean here, and it really wouldn’t do to miss the excellent native oysters as well. A shop is on site for picking up grub to go with your fish and there’s a café for days when you don’t fancy cooking for yourself. Other facilities include a play area and a launderette, plus a clubhouse where folk gather for food, drinks and entertainment in the form of cabaret acts.

Liked We absolutely loved west mersea holiday park.
From the moment we arrived we got a good vibe, the site was super clean.
Walked into reception and Maria on the desk was really welcoming and helpful, as were all the other staff we met.
We arrived on Tuesday and the site was really quiet & peaceful, although by Friday afternoon it started filling up for the weekend.
Toilet/ shower Facilities were dated, but nonetheless very clean and we had no qualms using them.
We were parked on the outer perimeter just a few metres from the beach, with the clubhouse also just a short stroll away.
Elsan point was across the other side of the site, but we didn't find this to be too much of an issue.
It's very dog friendly with a dog washing station, plenty of dog poop bins and even poo bag dispensers so no excuse for owners not to clean up after their dogs.
Overall this site is awesome value and in a perfect location for beach walks and exploring or just to chill and pop to the bar.
Most of the people we spoke to onsite were repeat visitors, and we can see why, We'll definitely be back.

Liked The price, had to keep checking it £10, right on beach, Bar and snack bar close by.
Lovely place, think my cousin had a static there a while ago

Disliked Quirky facilities, yes clean and dated, but quite a hike from tourers, once you find secret passage!!

Not the sites fault but one motor home was really playing loud music till gone 12pm should be someone going around keeping things in order

Liked Lots of space per pitch - grass and hard standing. Each pitch also has a water tap.

Great location right by the coast. We were able to walk to the seafood restaurants right along the beach which only took about 25 mins.

Disliked Showers were scalding hot. Too hot! And dressing areas needed a good cleaning. There were cobwebs everywhere although shower cubicles and toilets were very clean.

Disliked Showers and toilet block desperately need an upgrade, only 3 showers and one of them overflows as the drainage is too slow.

Nice quiet site

Disliked Shame our holiday was cancelled due a ‘mix up’ with the booking?! Our balance was taken automatically but we still received numerous e-mails threatening us with cancellation, and even though we responded it was cancelled meaning I had to phone to get it reinstated.

Local attractions

When you’re not birding on the Blackwater Estuary, investigate another nature reserve, the Essex Wildlife Trust Fingringhoe Wick (20 minutes' drive), a 200-acre habitat of 200 species of winged creatures, 27 types of dragonflies and damselflies, 24 sorts of butterflies, plus a few adders and badgers. Admire the 350 species of flowers too while looking out for critters too, then seek out more botanicals in the Beth Chatto Gardens (half an hour). For more animals, Colchester Zoo (25 minutes) is the place to see everything from cheetahs to lemurs, while fish fans might want to amble around the aquarium in Clacton-on-Sea instead. This coastal town also has a beach, pier and amusement park to busy the kids with; for more tiddler-friendly things to do, chuck the Go Bananas indoor playground (25 minutes) and the Curve Watersports aqua park (40 minutes) on your itinerary.
