Camp with views of ullswater

  • Spacious family park with spectacular views of Lake District fells
  • Penrith a 20-minute drive and Lake Ullswater within a 30-minute walk
  • Marina, licensed bar with TV and a games room, shop and playground
If you reckon a site with stunning views of the Cumbrian fells sounds like your kind of place, head over to family-friendly Ullswater Holiday Park. Sitting a half-hour walk from the shores of Ullswater (where guests can use Fair Field Marina or spend time canoeing, fishing and riding the famed Ullswater steamers), this option’s in a fab location for touring round the Lake District National Park. Kids can mess about in the half-acre playground at this well-equipped place, while adults have an ale at the licensed bar or a Farrer’s coffee in the café. Wifi is available (around the reception area and bar, not the whole site) and there's also a shop for essentials (including groceries and camping equipment) and a few supermarkets are 20 minutes’ drive away in the nearest town of Penrith. The capital of Cumbria in days of yore, this place has the 14th-century fortress to prove it... If loping from local village to local village seeing structures such as this sounds like an excellent option too, ride one of the Lake Ullswater steamers stopping at settlements such as Pooley Bridge and Glenridding along with the Aira Force falls. After you’ve set eyes on the whooshing water, other attractions nearby include those that combine architecture with lush landscapes – like Dalemain Mansion & Historic Gardens, 10 minutes away, and Lowther Castle & Gardens (20 minutes). There's also the Rheged Centre Cinema, a heritage hub in an old quarry with a grass roof, gallery and 3D screen (15 minutes away). Please note that the games room and bar may not be available in the low season (check in advance for opening hours).

FHU gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked Very helpful staff. Well stocked shop. Main camping and tourer pitches on the park are very tidy, well maintained and very spacious. The shower block is smart and clean.

Disliked The Pitchup pitches were untidy, cramped, uneven, sloping and overlooked by static caravans and other tourers. I asked at reception if we had been placed on our sub-standard pitch because we had booked through Pitchup and was told that was the case. She offered to try and move us to the better part of the park but bookings later in the week prevented this. The showers are push button and deliver 3 seconds of water so repeated pushing is needed. The shower jet very powerful but shoots almost horizontally out of the wall and soaks the entire area making it difficult to keep clothes dry. I didn't use the mop, which was standing in a bucket of dirty water, to clean the shower cubicle after use.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback, we are sorry to hear that you were not happy with your pitch, as you have booked through a third-party website (pitch up) this pitch has been allocated to yourself. We always suggest that customers take a look at our site map before booking and you can see where your pitch will be located, if you are unsure, you are always welcome to contact reception, and we can see what others pitches we have available.

Our team work very hard on a daily basis to keep all pitches clean and tidy, in regard to the pitches sloping, this is not something we are aware of and we have had no complaints before. But this is certainly something we will look into.

The showers are eco-friendly; we have push buttons so that customers don't leave the showers running when they are not in use. They are quite powerful if the shower is pointing straight down you can adjust the head so that it doesn't shoot straight at yourself. There is a section where you can place your clothes, but we do suggest that you keep these to the back and adjust the shower head.

There is mope available in each shower block that the water is changed quite frequently, but this is something we will certainly look into and pass on to the team.

Liked Site was clean & well presented. Wonderful facilities which were mostly clean. Stayed midweek off peak so facilities were never too busy.
Bar is lovely, good variety of drinks, barman was very friendly and chatty. Fish & chips were very tasty, although slightly pricy. You can have them delivered to the bar and can eat them in the bar also.
The freezer in the laundry room was helpful for our cool box due to having no electric.

Disliked Just a minor couple of points, nothing which would stop us going back. We pitched up in the middle of the site behind the middle toilet block (white building), the hand dryers in the washrooms would go off at all hours and are very noticeable. There is also some building works going on opposite this area during day time hours on the private areas of the site which caused some noise.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback, we are sorry to hear the hand dryer and the work that is going on around site caused a disturbers during your stay. This is certainly something we will look into. At the moment we do have some site maintenance happening around the park and we are trying to keep the noise down during certain hours.

we are making improvements to the park and preparing the park for some big changes but we do apologise and hope this doesn't effect you visiting in the future.

Disliked noise from the farm machinery

From the manager: Thank you for your great feedback, we do apologise about the farm machinery. We are a working campsite and do use a lot of machinery around site to empty bins, move static caravans etc, but we do try and only use this when necessary and during certain hours through the day.

FHU gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked The campsite was immaculate . toilet blocks outstanding clean ,staff very friendly and helpful, facilities on site good,

Disliked The plot we had was to small .could only get caravan on awning up then just enough room for car.this space needs some attention to it. Probably could have asked for better plot but didn't want the hassle of taking everything down. Also ground not level. And too close to opposite caravan hard to maneuver van into position. Houses nearby had dogs which were barking morning noon and night.unfair on holiday people nearby the houses. Needs addressing

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.
We're really pleased to hear that you found the site immaculate and enjoyed our clean facilities and friendly staff—it means a lot to know those efforts are appreciated.
We're sorry to hear that your pitch did not meet expectations and that nearby noise affected your experience. While we don't have control over neighbouring properties, we're exploring ways to minimize disturbance and preserve the peaceful atmosphere for our guests.

Local attractions

The Lake District doesn’t skimp on swish sights and attractions, and many of the best things to see and do in the national park – from bushcraft and watersports to golf and tennis – are within easy driving distance of the site. For classic Cumbrian walks Hallin Fell is a 20-minute drive away and the market town of Keswick, where you can go from perusing a pencil museum to dancing around the megalithic Castlerigg Stone Circle, is reachable in 25 minutes. A bit south of the town of Penrith (20 minutes) are the prehistoric Mayburgh Henge and Norman Brougham Castle. Other well-known Lake District settlements are also within easy reach along winding roads, like to Windermere (45 minutes away) and Ambleside (50 minutes). And if you fancy a crack at cantering instead of sitting in the car? Horse riding can be had from stables within a 15-minute drive, while guests who prefer roving on a revving vehicle can squat upon a quad bike and set off into the local lands (25 minutes from the park).
