Powered grass campsite

Liked: Lovely rural site large pitches not to close together. Free showers always hot. Ideal for travelling around local area

Disliked: Toilet block to far away from tents. Near to the caravan pitches. Not well controlled on a night People not very respectable for others. Whi h is a shame as thus spoilt it with people with kids

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Clean facilities that had thought through the shower design well with the space to keep your clothes dry. Helpful and friendly receptionist who gave good tips about the local area and activities!

Disliked: No shop for simple items like milk etc. Shame there isn’t a pub closer by either!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: We booked in to site but didn’t actually stay there. We decided to wild camp instead. After seeing the grass pitch we weren’t to keen on spending the night there in our camper van. It was very muddy on the way up to site and I didn’t want to risk getting stuck. Weather not their fault. But I didn’t like the idea of going in later that day and having to find a pitch . I would have preferred it to be allocated they I would know that was ours. The walk to the toilet block would have been muddy.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Location and friendly and helpful staff. Our second visit as we enjoyed it so much last year!

Disliked: Mother in law had an electric grass pitch which was right next to the gate to the field, so it was very noisy with all the cars driving in all day (and at night when people were driving to the toilets!) and not very safe for my toddler. Could a speed limit be put in place? Facilities are too narrow and toilet cubicles are difficult to get into. Also could do with more facilities as when we visited this time the site was full and there were queues most of the time for the toilets and showers.

Local attractions

Yorkshire folk are rightly proud of 'God's Own Country' – it's home to some of the finest historic houses, coast and countryside around. If you want to keep things local, head out to Kirkham Abbey (15 minutes' drive) to visit the ruins of the priory or for waterside strolls along the Derwent river. Like to be beside the seaside? Of course you do, and luckily this area has plenty of options to choose from. If you fancy venturing to Whitby's harbour and beaches, drive to Pickering (25 minutes) and hitch a ride on a steam train for a stonkingly scenic journey over the North York Moors. Bempton Cliffs Seabird Centre (an hour away) is a rather wilder beauty spot – this nature hub is home to about a quarter of a million nesting seabirds (so be sure to pack your binoculars). Art, architecture and landscaped grounds can all be rather moreish, so check out other historic houses in the area, like Nunnington Hall (20 minutes), Duncombe Park (25 minutes), Sledmere House (30 minutes) and Beningbrough Hall (40 minutes), if you fancy a change of scene on your blue-blooded escapades.
