If you’re heading for a holiday in the Mecklenburg Lake District, it’s a fair bet that you’d favour a fab lakeside location, ja? Step forward Campingplatz am Weißen See, a peaceful park on the banks of the Weißen See and an easy 15-minute amble from the shops, restaurants and other town amenities of Wesenberg. This part of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is well supplied with lovely lakes, making it a tiptop area for those who’d like to get out into the fresh air for walks, bike rides or canoe trips. Several of the lakes are linked together, so if you launch in the right spot you can spend a whole day pottering from lake to lake without getting off the water. That’s not the case here though: the Weißen See is self-contained and no motorboats are allowed, so you can practise your paddling in peace and quiet, take a leisurely swim from the jetty without fear of high-speed collisions… or just stretch out for a bit of sunbathing on the little sandy beach. Small sorts seeking something more energetic? There’s a playground for their clambering endeavours and a football pitch where they can come together for a kickabout. Fuel whatever activity you choose with meals at the site’s restaurant or by picking up supplies at the shop. If you can hang on until dusk starts to fall, there’s often a campfire cookout to be had during the summer months.

Fantastic tranquil woodland site near a clean lake & beach. Staff are super friendly & helpful. Toilets are spotless. Restaurant gets mixed reviews – some love it, some say skip it (pricey & not great). Watch out for uneven pitches & no WiFi. No dogs in the lake.

Liked Das Personal ist mega freundlich. Die Sanitären Anlagen waren sauber. Der See ist nur wenige Meter entfernt und traumhaft schön. Highlight der Kinder war der fussballspielende Hund.;)

Liked Friendly staff. Lake on your doorstep! So lovely to swim in. Took paddle boards too and super safe for the children to take them out on their own.
Facilities good. Just be aware it’s a forest floor so lots of bits get picked up on your shoes. Not a problem just something to be aware off. Showers go on for 4minutes (on a count down) but stop every 30seconds (you can easily restart them again). They lock out after 4minutes for 5minutes before you can restart them. Again not a problem. It’s long enough to have a shower and because they stop it allows you time to wash hair etc.

If the one thing missing from this lakeside retreat is a place to fish, wander over to Wesenberg (15 minutes’ walk) where there are suitable places to wield a fishing rod; you can also hire boats here or take a stroll around the castle. If that’s given you a taste for castles, you may also like to mosey around Mirow Castle (10 minutes’ drive) or head to Neustrelitz (20 minutes), for sculpture-filled palace gardens and a small zoo. For a bigger collection of creatures, take the 40-minute drive to Kunsterspring zoo, famed for its pack of wolves. The Rechlin aviation museum is a 20-minute drive away if your interests lie more in engineering than animals. If spotting species in the wild is more your thing, make for the Müritz National Park (10 minutes), where there’s some great birdwatching along with many kilometres of trail to hike or bike along. Overdone the efforts a tad? Swing back to base via the spa and swimming pool at Muritztherme (half an hour) to soothe muscles in the waters.
