  • Spacious, private sites in bushland 35 minutes from Coffs Harbour
  • Scout Falls 15 minutes’ drive; Woolgoolga 35 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; colourful birdlife; spectacular stargazing
For a taste of the Australian bush, head to The Good Life Camping, between Glenreagh (five minutes’ drive) and Nana Glen (15 minutes), in north-eastern New South Wales. The campground itself has few facilities – no toilets, no showers, and no drinking or running water; as such, it’s suited for self-contained campervans. What it does have, however, is spacious and blissfully private sites (so private, in fact, that you can let your dog off the lead in your corner of the campground, and other guests would never know…). And all around your site: lush vegetation. Dense foliage often means birdlife, and indeed, this is the case here, so bring your binoculars and your best bird-identifying manual: you might well spot some rare winged creature flitting about. Local trails through the rainforest of Sherwood Nature Reserve (15 minutes) lead to gorgeous swimming holes, such as the one at Scout Falls or Black Dog Swimming Hole, and to lookout points with views of the Orara Valley. Those who prefer a dip in the sea with their hike might want to head to the coast and the Moonee Beach Nature Reserve (25 minutes), where you can also go snorkelling and (if you’re lucky) spot a whale in the distance. Back at the campground, you’re welcome to light a barbecue or a campfire (that’s if you don’t fancy the drive to Glenreagh, though the local watering hole there is well worth a visit for its delicious menu); as darkness falls, remember to look up at the spectacular star-studded sky.

Local attractions

Coffs Harbour (35 minutes’ drive) is popular for its sandy beaches and pretty marina. From the marina, a walkway leads to the Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve, a forested spot with splendid views of the coastline. There are more views from the Forest Sky Pier, which hangs above the tree canopy. Swimming, surfing and snorkelling await at Woolgoolga (35 minutes). Hike up to the Woolgoolga Headland for far-reaching views; between May and October you might also catch a glimpse of whales on their migration. Inland from Woolgoolga, the Wedding Bells State Forest is popular with mountain bikers. Dorrigo National Park (one and a half hours), part of the Gondwana Rainforest, attracts day trippers with its trails and waterfalls, like rocky Sherrard Falls and Crystal Shower Falls, where a path takes you behind the water. Those with a head for heights might want to check out the views from the Skywalk Lookout.
