  • Camping on a hilltop smallholding with mountain and sea views
  • A 25-minute drive from Porthcawl; 50 minutes to the Brecon Beacons
  • Alpaca, pigs and poultry on site; access down a private gravel track
Get away above the clouds… Tal-y-Fan Farm may have a high-up hilltop location, but it’s very grounded in the way of facilities. The wild camping site has a composting toilet and hot shower. Mountain and sea views are a couple key ingredients at Tal-y-Fan Farm, as is its fresh water supply. Barbecues are permitted, so it’s handy that there are farm shops within 15 minutes’ drive of the site or general shops within 10 minutes’ drive of the site. Wild campers will be based on a smallholding, which keeps alpacas, pigs and poultry. Access is down a private gravel track, across a common. It’s a great spot for hikes and the likes, with the Brecon Beacons National Park accessible from 50 minutes’ drive of the site and the Gower Peninsula around an hour away too. Even closer is the sea. Porthcawl, 25 minutes’ drive away, has a set of gorgeous beaches, a fairground and surf or paddleboard hire, along with cafés, restaurants and bars. For a day out in the capital, it's a 40-minute drive to the centre of Cardiff. A little further afield is Barry Island (45 minutes), with its lively seafront and arcades, a destination where parts of Gavin and Stacey were filmed. Please note that dogs are not allowed on site.

Stargazer bell tent

Liked Suzanne is a fab host, very friendly and helpful. Food was tasty.
Site is quiet and well spaced out. Views from campsite are amazing.
Stargazer tent was clean and comfy.

Disliked Compost toilet cubicle was small, so a bit of a challenge, but was clean so can't really fault it.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked The hosts were extremely inviting, they have a small cafe type set up and when we turned up hungry they were very happy to rustle up delicious cheese rolls with fresh picked salad and tea/coffee in lovely China, not our usual camping meal experience! We also had breakfast which was fantastic (with eggs fresh from the farm). The site has lovely geese, chickens, turkeys and even alpacas and the surrounding countryside is beautiful. The toilet/shower facilities were simple but very clean. The site is quiet and remote but with lots of great stuff to do nearby. Relaxed and perfect for our one night stay to be local to family we were visiting.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Everything. The plots were large, the host was lovely and it had basic facilities that you need.
Suzanne was very helpful, firewood available for small fire pits and recycling boxes. Suzanne will provide meals as ordered, we didn't try these but there was a lovely selection on offer.
30 odd mins to Cardiff, lovely drive to Porthcawl and Swansea.
I would love to stay again. Hopefully with better weather.

Disliked The narrow lane to property however there are other entry options that aren't as tight.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Owners really friendly, hot water in shower, nicest compost toilet I've ever used, nice size level pitch. Fire pit provided so lots of opportunities for smores and fire cooking, keeping teens and toddler entertained. Animals to see, beautiful view, feels really rural but nicely accessible to shops and m4. Owners contacted me over expected bad weather and were really helpful over it. Good phone signal with Three. Bottom line we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! 😊

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked What a wonderful host Suzanne is!

Very friendly, welcoming, and helpful.

Her husband even helped repeg our tent when the wind was up, and Suzanne leant us a tool to help dismantle when done.

On site catering was very appreciated after a rainy night - the bacon sandwich and tea very welcome!

There was a fire pit included, and roasting marshmallows is very important to us, so appreciated.

Site itself is lovely, very rural and felt like a proper camping experience, which was needed.

Pitch size was huge, and the small number of guests at a time made sure we felt relaxed and not at all crowded.

Disliked The road getting to the site was challenging for a little car like mine. Just go very, very slowly!

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked - Traumhafte Lage
- Kleiner Campingplatz mit großer Stellfläche
- Freundliche und hilfsbereite Platzbetreiberin
- kleiner Kinderspielplatz
