  • Adults-only touring pitches at a rural site with views of Eryri peaks
  • Llanddwyn Island 20 minutes’ drive; Newborough Forest 15 minutes
  • Restaurant with alfresco dining; 10 minutes' drive from the beach
Mountain views, sandy beaches and a rich cultural heritage – what more do you need to click on the green button and book your spot at Afon Braint? This peaceful, adults-only rural site – which is so close to the Welsh river of the same name and its Giant Rhuddgaer Stepping Stones (15 minutes’ walk), it has borrowed that very name for itself – sits on Anglesey’s south-eastern corner, within the coastal belt that makes up the Anglesey National Landscape. On the A4080 road between the villages of Niwbwrch (just under a mile, about 20 minutes on foot) and Dwyran (five minutes’ drive or a 25-minute walk), Afon Braint comes with spacious gravel touring pitches. Be aware that there is no electric hook-up; what is there, though, are essentials such as a toilet block and fresh drinking water, plus grey and chemical waste disposal points. Spectacular views of the peaks of Eryri (Snowdonia) accompany the meals you consume in the picnic area, and there’s also a restaurant with a large patio and covered pods if you want to take in the mountain vistas regardless of the weather. The nearest pub is in Niwbwrch, which also has a fish and chip shop and a supermarket, with more shopping and dining options in Llangefni (20 minutes) and Bangor (25 minutes). Windswept strolls await at Maes Parcio Ynys Llanddwyn and Newborough Beach (15 minutes), a nature reserve with a large dune system, marshes and a pine forest, plus tidal Llanddwyn Island (20 minutes), with a lighthouse overlooking the rocky shore.

Power optional gravel caravan site (large)

Liked We really enjoyed it all, really welcoming and essential facilities done really well. Calm and peaceful and generous pitches. Lots of useful information in the “fun shed”! We really enjoyed our Pizza which our host delivered to our van door outside of cafe hours! A great base to explore the island and hills! The view of the mountains doesn’t disappoint!

Amazing access to the beach!

Disliked Only draw back is sharing the toilets with the Cafe in opening hours however, opening hours are 10-3 which gives you plenty of time to use it.

Power optional gravel motorhome site

Liked Site and set up

Disliked The third degree quizzing of my son when he came to pick me up from the people running the site about an “incident” which basically ally meant they had turned up to pick me up

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Scott, thank you for your feedback on the visitors policy. On arrival, you asked about our visitor arrangements, which were explained to you. Should a visitor be on site, it is to be pre-arranged by the guest, so that we know a non-guest will be present – this is especially important during out of hours periods. Instead of parking at the pitches, the visitor is required to use the pay and display car park which has a £5 per day fee, though the fee is waived where the visitor uses the cafe. We also asked that you met the visitor at the main gate whenever that gate is closed. You explained to us that your visitor would not be on site as they were ‘picking you up at the gate soon’. We confirmed that was fine and that no fees would apply.
What transpired was quite different – whilst this is no issue in itself, it did however lead to a problem for your son when he was found alone at the back of the café over 6 hours later by a member of staff, well after the cafe had closed to the general public. I’m afraid for security reasons, we were obliged to approach him for details as no visitors had been arranged to be on site that evening. He duly gave the details for which we thanked him and apologised for startling him, but did ask that he reminded you that visitors should be pre-arranged with us.
Had you updated us on the change in the arrangements for your visitor, your son and ourselves would not have been placed in an awkward position – passing the blame does seem somewhat unreasonable given how you were agreeable to the explanation of the visitor requirements on arrival; if you had any issue with the policy, we would have happily discussed this with you. I’m afraid we also disagree with you in that we believe the 4 hours in total spent on site by your son does not equate to a ‘pick up’ situation as your review states. We can therefore only conclude that you wished to avoid the visitor car park fees. We also note that said fees remain unpaid on your departure, which has duly been reported to Pitchup in our complaint logged against you earlier today.
Overall, we do have a duty of care regarding the safety and security of our guests and where there are non-guests on site when they shouldn’t be, this must be followed up to our satisfaction.

Power optional gravel motorhome site

Liked Brilliant two-day stay! Couldn’t fault it. The site was spotless—clean, tidy, and clearly well looked after. Food was excellent, and the fact they’ll bring takeaway straight to your van at a time that suits you is such a nice touch.

It’s only about a 20-minute walk to the iconic giant stepping stones, so perfect for a bit of adventure. Even pitches near the roadside had lovely views and were quiet enough that you’d never know a road was there. Enough distance for peace and proper relaxation.

WiFi worked right at the pitch (bonus!), and the whole vibe was welcoming from start to finish. Just the kind of place you settle in fast and leave wishing you’d booked longer.

A drive along the Menai Strait takes you past National Trust - Plas Newydd House and Gardens (15 minutes’ drive), with a large mural by early 20th-century artist Rex Whistler, to Pili Palas Nature World (20 minutes), home to meerkats, lizards and butterflies. Continue on to Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens (20 minutes) for strolls among woodland and past waterfalls. Alongside collections of archaeology and local crafts, Oriel Môn (20 minutes) also displays works by modern and contemporary artists such as Charles Tunnicliffe, known for his depictions of birds, and landscape painter Sir John Kyffin Williams. Cross the modern Britannia Bridge (or drive a little further to the Victorian Menai Suspension Bridge) and on to Caernarfon (half an hour), where a multiturreted medieval castle sits at the mouth of the river Afon Seiont. Stroll along the marina or climb up to the Caernarfon Tower for far-reaching views across the Menai Strait.
