  • Family holiday park in the grounds of an 18th-century listed building
  • Aberdyfi 20 minutes' drive; half an hour from Barmouth
  • Play area and laundry facilities; pub and station five minutes' walk
Whether you’re getting out over rugged peaks or green clifftops, Hendre Hall Holiday Park is a fine spot for exploring the Cardigan Bay coast and the gorgeous countryside of the Cambrian mountains in Snowdonia National Park. Sitting between the two, this site is located in the grounds of Hendre Hall, an attractive listed building that dates back to the 18th century – making it a historic base for exploring the green hills that make this landscape one of the prettiest in Britain. Have your camera at the ready to capture some of the sunsets that light up the sky in the west. You may also want to take photos of the food, the hills and the many miles of spectacular coastline, including views over to the Llŷn Peninsula, Snowdon, Barmouth and Bardsey Island. With a bit of luck, you may see the dolphins that live in Cardigan Bay too. Sea and sand on your mind? That's not a surprise – the nearest beach is about a five-minute walk away along a footpath that is directly accessible from the site. Llwyngwril's other amenities, like a friendly local pub, a railway station and a small shop, are also about five minutes' walk away. There are solid on-site facilities at Hendre Hall Holiday Park too, including toilets, showers, a wash house with laundry facilities and a recycling area. Kids are very welcome here and have a playground all to themselves; dogs are allowed to come and explore the area by your side too. Hendre Hall Holiday Park is also home to pygmy goats and chickens which can be visited and fed. Please note that this is a family site and that quiet hours are in force after 10.30pm.

Snowdon camping pod

Liked: The site was absolutely stunning. All the facilities were really clean and in good shape. the site has amazing views, and all the staff were really helpful and friendly. It is very welcoming to young couples, solo travellers, older couples, families with children, and it's pet-friendly!! I am very pleased with the experience, and the donkeys and the stars and bats at night definitely added something special. The shop has everything you need, and the site is just absolutely amazing! It has all the facilities you will need for camping or glamping, and the views from the short coastal walk to the beach are breath-taking.

Disliked: We booked as it said onsite restaurant was open , checked in and reception said they finished doing food at 8pm, so at 630 we decided to go and get food only to find it closed, and went to reception she apologised and said she forgot her days thinking it was a Saturday when they are open till 8 but said there was a pub up the road , drive up but nowhere to park a campervan , so my husband dropped me off and walked back himself, it was a bit of a walk especially as I have arthritis in knees . You also need £1 to have a decent shower, blocks did not have any slip mats , only a very slippery tile floor when wet

Liked: Situation, scenic, near beach, very quiet.

Disliked: Entrance very narrow and driveway looks like a builders yard and very untidy, No fully serviced pitches, very old showers with no hot water in the sinks that seriously need upgrading. £1 for a shower. Showers and toilets not kept clean. Washing up facility dirty and old and would not consider using. Booked for 2 caravans and requested 2 pitches together but on arrival we were told that one of us would be in one field and the other in another field. Someone else who had just arrived very kindly offered to move so that at least we’re located in the same field. Pub on site but not very often open. The whole site needs upgrading and tidying up.

Liked: Whilst the site had basic camping facilities they were very clean which I feel is important. The grass was also well maintained. The lady at checkin was very informative, and helpful when finding pitches close to our other party. The guy behind the bar was very busy but polite and worked hard - it did get a bit stressful for him when the card machine went down! It was also go to see that the owner wasn’t afraid to address poorly behaved guests. Only a quick stay for us this time but we will definitely be back as the location, beach, village, donkeys and goats made it a great place for families

Liked: Nice little site, well maintained with beautiful views and nice food. We went on a Saturday and they were serving pizzas in the evening which were lovely as well as had a small bar on site and a shop.

Disliked: Toilets could do with a little update as some of the doors on the ladies toilets didn’t lock properly

Powered grass caravan site

Liked: Small site. Quietness. Location. Close to sea and Fairbourne . Friendly staff. Clean toilets & showers. Liked local pub Garthangharad. Beautiful views, although railway embankment close to bottom of site but trains infrequent.

Disliked: Poorly stocked farm shop particularly as village shop small and with limited choice. Cafe/bar not open. Disliked coin operated showers with difficult temperature regulation. One out of order for part of our stay.

Liked: Friendly. Views were fab. Let us move pitch to help calm dog as we were originally parked right by the donkeys. Farm shop and bar were nice.

Disliked: Toilets were a bit dirty and the shower very temperamental. Pitches weren't as big as we thought for a 7 meter motor home . Nowhere to dump waste water for a motorhome .

From the manager: Hi John, Sorry you werent shown where the chemical tipping point was - it is located behind the shower block. Apart from that, we're glad you enjoyed your stay and made use of the patio area and bar / sunshine :) lovely to meet you both and your dog. All the best, Clea

Local attractions

When you set down here, ready your swimming gear, as Bala Lake (40 minutes’ drive) is a fine setting for sailing, wild swimming and canoeing or hiking the hills on all sides. The kit will come in handy for exploring the Barmouth (30 minutes) seafront by paddleboard, too, or windsurfing and kitesurfing in Aberdyfi (20 minutes). If more active pursuits are what you like your holidays chock-full with, Dolgellau (20 minutes) is a good point of departure for hikes, mountain biking or climbing crags. More beach paddles, perhaps, in Tywyn (15 minutes), followed by a traditional butter bun? Perhaps your preferred way of taking in views is from a cosy seat on an old steam train, such as the Fairbourne Railway (five minutes). It’s one of several historical places you might want to seek out – others include the Dyffryn Ardudwy burial chamber (40 minutes) and the Italian-style Portmeirion (50 minutes) village. Plas Brondanw Gardens (50 minutes) was designed by the same architect that created Portmeirion.
