Dog walking field, with footpath into acres of mature woodland, leading to the river parrett

  • Adults-only site with a woodland above the Somerset Levels
  • Half an hour's drive from Glastonbury and 40 minutes from Wells
  • On-site weekend-only pub with a sundeck overlooking a 32-mile view
Phew, what a view… adults-only Bowdens Crest Caravan and Camping Park overlooks the Somerset Levels and its moors, as well as the Quantock and Blackdown Hills, the river Parrett and the Vale of Taunton Deane, stretching out towards Brendon Hill and Exmoor. Over 30 miles of Somerset surroundings can be seen from here on a clear day, all the way to Minehead. The site covers nine and a half acres of natural woodland and elevated land, set on white lias stone with an eight-inch soil top (rock pegs are recommended for tents). There's an on-site pub, the Bowden's Bar, which is open on weekends only and has a scenic sundeck with views of the countryside; there are entertainment nights on occasion throughout the year. Plus, local street food trucks pay the site a visit on weekends, so grab some hot food to eat in the bar or take back to your pitch. On-site amenities include chemical disposal and a well-maintained toilet and shower block with separate ladies’ and gents’ sections, and an accessible shower room. Washing-up sinks with free hot water are also available. There is also an on-site fitness centre where you can keep fit while on holiday. The small town of Langport is about a mile and a half away. It's half an hour's drive from the site to Glastonbury or 40 minutes to Wells.

What customers say

Top spot! Immaculately kept with stunning views and a super friendly vibe, especially from manager Stan. The bar's a ripper social hub. Showers & loos are spotless. Minor gripes: ants in a tent, a bit of barking, and one mention of older shower blocks. Peaceful and good value.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Our first time camping, and what a lovely site with amazing views. Stan very helpful on arrival and came round after an hour to check we were ok. Clean toilets and showers, on site bar amazing and food vans at weekend, pizza Friday and Greek Saturday 😀 There was an onsite fete, play your cards right and a bbq put on by the residents/permanent pitch holders which was brilliant. Everyone so friendly and helpful, we will definitely be back.

Disliked Nothing… if you’re looking for somewhere you can enjoy the peace, or you like meeting people and socialising this place has it all.

Liked Really quiet site in a lovely position with great views over the Somerset levels.
Langport is a lovely town with a supermarket about 1.5 miles away from the site.
Stan is very helpful and knowleagable.
Ladies showers were cold one morning but he sorted it immediately.
The showers, toilets etc were all extremely clean.

Disliked The (presumed drunk) bearded resident who spent Saturday night shouting for 'Alexa' in a very loud voice.
Fortunately he must have found her by 9-30pm as he then stopped and probably went to bed!

Camping pod

Liked Beautiful view from the camping pod. The welcome was very friendly and helpful. The pods are great, comfy beds, storage, kettle, BBQ and outside chimnea. We were a group of 4 ladies on motorcycles and it was such a treat not to have to carry tents etc. we were made very welcome. Toilets and showers were always very clean with plenty of hot water. We loved the pizza van and bar on Friday night.

Disliked Absolutely nothing!!

Liked Welcoming owner. Clean loos & shower block with plenty of warm water. Fantastic view from the 'pub' over the levels. Large, flat pitch.

Disliked V quiet site, pub only open on the Sat night, not a 'disliked' but still worth folk being aware of. No view from the pitch itself, which lacked any tree/ planting 'privacy'. Would I recommend, it would depend on what someone was looking for.? Unlikely to return as not enough in the area itself to warrant.

Liked Staff were friendly and helpful. Bar was great and view fantastic

Disliked Specifically booked this site because of being Adult friendly and offered Food onsite at weekends. However, on arrival on a Saturday, we were told, Oh, the food facility is here only on a Friday despite Saturday being within the weekend. Along with that the site is not Adults only as we saw 2 children when we were there.
Expensive stay considering the site is not what it says it is

Liked Absolutely beautiful location. Stunning views and Stan the manager was very helpful. We had a fabulous time in the on site bar - Jeff and Jan and their team are wonderful hosts (not forgetting Lucy the gorgeous dog!) The Sunday meat raffle was a hoot and we will definitely be back.
Check in was easy and on site facilities were clean and sufficient for our needs.

Disliked Absolutely nothing

From the manager: Thanks guys, what a lovely review and so pleased that you will come back to see us again.

Stan

Local attractions

The best of Somerset is close to hand from Bowdens Crest, such as witch hunting at Wookey Hole Caves, striding around the Quantock Hills, Blackdown Hills and the Somerset Levels, exploring the subterranean sights of Cheddar Caves, or, for the more modern, happily spending holiday money at Clarks Village in nearby Street. Glastonbury is about 12 miles away; these days it’s probably better known for its famous fest nearby, but a more peaceful time can be had around Glastonbury Abbey, which has stood on this site since the seventh century and which may – just possibly – be King Arthur’s Avalon where the mighty Excalibur was forged (Arthur and Queen Guinevere are purportedly buried here.) The ‘holy hill’ of Glastonbury Tor, home to Gwyn ap Nudd or the King of the Fairies, is another legendary local highlight to trek to: Somerset picnics taste super at the base of St Michael’s Tower, accompanied by tasty views of the Somerset Levels, Wiltshire, Dorset and over to Wales. Tiny Wells, about 20 miles away, is well worth a visit too: once there, see the show caves at the Wookey Hole Caves on the edge of the Mendip Hills. Another seven or so miles north-west and on the south side of the Mendips, spectacular Cheddar is worth at least a day to see the most of Cheddar Gorge and Cheddar Caves, where you can stick to sightseeing or be a bit more adventurous caving or rock climbing. Outdoor options in the area include hiring a bike and pedalling off from Langport Visitor Centre into the Somerset countryside, fishing on the River Parrett and around Bridgwater, Somerton and Taunton, or sea fishing for Dover sole and bass from the beach at Burnham-on-Sea.
