  • Small orchard campsite in the peaceful Dorset village of Trent
  • Sherborne 10 minutes' drive; Abbotsbury and Weymouth 50 minutes
  • Just off the Monarch's Way walk; walk to the village pub or play area
For a taste of delicious Dorset idyll, book a break at Monarch's Way Campsite, a small site where pitches are set in a sheltered orchard on the edge of a peaceful village. Located just off the Monarch's Way, a 625-mile long-distance footpath that crisscrosses some of England's most scenic rural areas, the pitches here are surrounded by blossoming fruit trees and dappled sunlight. Listen out for the gentle hum of bees and occasional chirping of the birds as you settle into your cosy camping spot. What you do next is up to you – you might like to just hang around and unwind among the trees as the evening draws in, but there's also a friendly village pub a few minutes' walk away that you can stroll towards for good food and drink (handily, guests can get a 10% discount here for breakfasts and breakfast sandwiches). A playground is also 100 metres away from the site. Back at the campsite there are good basic amenities, including clean toilets and fresh water taps. Well-behaved dogs and safely set up barbecues are allowed, so bring the whole family along and prepare for an alfresco cookout or two. Nearby Sherborne (10 minutes' drive) has plenty of places to stock up, as well as other handy amenities like cafés, pubs and a railway station.

What customers say

A peaceful, natural spot in a lovely orchard. Reviewers rave about the quiet vibe, wildlife, and big sites – perfect for an off-grid escape. The local pub gets a thumbs up for food and atmosphere. Basic facilities like compost loos are generally fine, though some want better signs and loos.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Very quirky site! Basically a field left to meadow with a few pitches mowed. Instructions say to pitch anywhere though. I found a flat spot.
The loos were quirky with needing to add straw.
Price was great for the facilities

Disliked The loos needed some work as I couldn't lock my door
Manager of the site mentioned the field was meant to take 30. That's way too many

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Tidy, quiet area. Activities for the children left in the hut which was a nice touch, as this wasn't there last time.
Also water facilities, and an extra toilet block in place now.
A park, and a pub within walking distance, also a few shops within a few minutes driving.

Disliked Was a bit shocked when we arrived to very overgrown grass, with limited ( plots ) to pitch up. As the picture shows, it's well kept on the advertisement, as it was our previous stay but now, Felt very unkept this time, compared to our last stay. Unfortunately this has put us off staying again. If the grass was kept well, and the bushes / trees then it wouldn't have Been an issue, but felt very limited for what the kids could do, eg play football, etc as alot of over grown grass. Saying that, there is a park a little away, with a small field, but if your wanting to sit at your tent and let them play it's very limited. Id say this is more a adults/single stay now, for a peaceful night.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked We stayed at this campsite for 2 nights in may, we had the most amazing, unforgettable time! As six teen girls it can be hard to find a campsite that will accept ANY under 18 even if over 18s are there! We had so much fun and we will definitely be coming back here in 5 years for our camping reunion as suggested by the owner 🤣 we did have the campsite to ourselves on the second night which was a bonus!! We can’t wait to come back in the near future and make some more unforgettable memories. Definitely needs an upgrade on the toilet though, that’s one thing we did struggle with. We ended up having to drive to find a local toilet at night as it was literally pitch black and no lights around.

Local attractions

Starting off in Sherborne (10 minutes' drive), take yourselves for a wander around the town's two castles, both of which are located next to a peaceful lake, before heading over to Sherborne Abbey in the bustling town centre. There's a monthly artisans' market in town where you can pick up tasty treats and souvenirs, but there's no need to worry if your dates don't coincide, as there are also farm shops and some excellent independent cafés to try. Nature and wildlife enthusiasts should not miss the opportunity to visit the Abbotsbury Swannery and Subtropical Gardens (50 minutes), both of which are located close to the pretty Dorset coast. After watching the mute swans gliding across the lagoon and checking out the garden's impressive array of flora, head down the road to the sandy beaches at Weymouth (50 minutes) for a traditional bucket and spade experience. If you're in search of more coastal spots, Jurassic Coast towns like Lyme Regis (an hour) are unlikely to disappoint – here you can search for fossils along the water's edge, go mackerel fishing, check out the geology at nearby Charmouth Beach or get up close and personal with local sealife at the town's small aquarium.
