Camp entrance

  • Wild-style camping on a 16-acre Devon woodland site near Denbury
  • A 10-minute drive to Dartmoor National Park; 25 minutes to Paignton
  • Peaceful and private landscaped pitches among mature oak trees
The brains behind Barhams Woodland Camping have previously been responsible for one of Europe’s top hostels for outdoor lovers, so you can be sure they’ve got a pretty good idea of what makes a good base for an outdoor break. At this Devon site they describe the setup as ‘wild camping – with one or two of the rough edges taken away’. And that’s a great way to describe this place, set among 16 acres of woodland a mile from Denbury. It’s a laidback place that’s all about appreciating things like peaceful campfire evenings, fresh air and birdsong – but it’s also got flushing toilets, gas-powered showers and a washing-up area to make life a little more comfortable. Each of the pitches here has been thoughtfully landscaped to make the most of the setting and provide plenty of privacy. That means they’ve all got their own individual character – but what they’ve got in common is a setting under the canopy of tall oak trees that have been in place for more than a hundred years. That canopy can be handy for sheltering you from passing rain showers, but there are also enough gaps between the branches to make sure some sunlight breaks through. In another handy little touch, the car park has been set up to provide an allocated space for each pitch – a useful feature for peace of mind that you’ll always find a space. The south Devon surroundings are just as fine here, too – the edge of Dartmoor National Park is about 10 minutes’ drive and the coast about 25 minutes, so you’ll have plenty of choice when it comes to walking trails, outdoor activities and family attractions.

What customers say

Great peaceful woodland getaway with private, spacious sites & fire pits. Clean, eco-friendly facilities. Friendly owners. Tricky rural roads, but worth it for the serene, comfy wild camping vibe.

Unpowered concrete slab campervan site (maximum 6 metres)

Liked The secluded quiet, forest location and the shaded pitches. The toilets, showers and washing area were clean and well stocked.

Disliked I bit difficult to get to, along very narrow lanes.

Liked Lovely wild camping feel. The kids (4 and 6) had a great time. The campsite was easily accessible with our wagon. Very clean toilets. The kids loved the fire pit. I would definitely go again.

Unpowered concrete slab campervan site (maximum 6 metres)

Liked The plot set up gave everyone sufficient personal space and privacy, the toilets and wash facilities were well stocked and in good/clean condition. Lisa and John were super helpful and really kind to our 4 year old even giving her some fairy doors to paint for the trees.

Disliked Temperature of the showers was inconsistent and often ran from hot to cold but for an off grid system this is likely expected and wasn’t bad enough that it put me off.

Unpowered concrete slab campervan site (maximum 6 metres)

Liked It's a really lovely campsite, the couple who run it are super friendly and helpful. The pitches are really spread out and quite private and the site itself is so quiet and peaceful. The facilities are basic but really well kept, they are clean and everything is well thought out. The showers are hot. It's a real woodland gem, we had a resident robin visit every morning and he even sat on our hand to eat our granola!

Disliked The lane leading to the campsite from the main road is so narrow, we were in a VW campervan and had to pull the mirrors in, unfortunately we scratched our van many times coming and going from the site.

Unpowered forest floor tent site (six person)

Liked The location and authenticity of camping in the woods. The site is kept in pristine condition with toilet, shower and washing up facilities. Host were very welcoming too.

Disliked The roads to get there are very scary and definitely would not recommend if you wouldn’t like like your car scratched up or if you don’t like driving in reverse.

Liked the location, the peace and local village just a short walk away has a fantastic pub called The Union Inn serving delicious food. Met one of the owners who was lovely . facilities are a bonus and the robins popping in for a bite to eat from your hands is a bit special. late nights by the firepit with a glass of whatever you like makes for a great stay

Unpowered forest floor tent site (four person)

Liked We had a lovely 1 night stay here as a treat for our 8 year son that adores forests. It was a really lovely and unique set up that feels like wild camping (but luckily has toilets and showers :D). They have designed the tent pitches so that you get a lovely private space with beautiful trees arching over and around. The lovely friendly owners should be very proud :D

Local attractions

Fancy a walk? There are plenty of options around here, including moorland hikes in Dartmoor National Park (10 minutes’ drive) and gentler strolls in the River Dart Country Park (15 minutes) – the latter also with a bike park and an adventure park. If that’s all too strenuous, a ride on the South Devon Railway (15 minutes) will show you some of the scenery instead. For coastal days out, head to local beaches like Teignmouth (25 minutes) and Ness Cove (half an hour) or visit popular seaside towns like Torquay (half an hour) and Brixham (35 minutes). Kid-friendly days out are plentiful too – as well as all the beaches, you might like to meet cute animals at Pennywell Farm (20 minutes) and their more exotic cousins at Paignton Zoo (25 minutes) or feel like a giant at Babbacombe Model Village (25 minutes).
