  • Old-fashioned site in Dawlish Warren with modern facilities
  • A 15- to 25-minute walk to the beach, dunes and nature reserve
  • Seven acres of grassland in a secluded setting
Old-style camping with new-style facilities, minutes from the Devon coastline and a 500-acre nature reserve stuffed with species of all sorts… You might want two weeks at least at Leadstone Camping in Dawlish Warren. This very friendly site, which has been around since 1974, is one of those where the staff do their utmost to make sure guests have as good a time as possible. Although this is a traditional and uncommercialised site, the standards are modern. Amenities stretch to a redeveloped amenities block with hot showers, toilets, basins, a hairdryer, a baby changing unit and an accessible room with a shower, toilet and wash basin. Leadstone also has a launderette, playground, washing-up facilities and water points in the pitching fields. For other supplies and food, a supermarket is a mile away. Anyone walking the 10 minutes to Dawlish Warren will find a pub serving lunch and evening meals handily placed along the way.

Badger powered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site (large)

Liked Beautiful well maintained campsite. Helpful friendly staff. For the busiest time of year the staff work very hard to keep the site pristine. The pitches are spacious. Plenty of facilities, toilets, showers, cleaned regularly. Quiet after 10pm. My grandsons loved the little park. It is in a good location to Dawlish Warren beach 10/15 mins walk away. 1.2 mile to Sainsbury’s. The site had a couple of food vans selling really nice reasonably priced food and drinks. I will definitely stay there again.

Badger powered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site (large)

Liked We had such a lovely welcome, this was our second time at this site, the first was about 10 years ago. We were shown to our pitch, told about all the amenities and introduced to the chap showing us around. We had a large pitch with a good view of the park, the pitch was slightly sloping but it didn’t cause too much of a problem.

There is such a great atmosphere here. The site is a short walk down to the beach, but there is a car park next to the beach too, it’s a lovely beach with lifeguards. There is also a small fairground which is a £1 a ride and a few clothes shops and nik nak shops too. A really nice pub/restaurant overlooking the sea and some ice cream places.

There is a bus stop directly outside the campsite and the train station is just down the road. We had a really lovely train ride to Torquay for £26 return (family of 5).

The toilet blocks are clean and tidy. There are 6 unisex showers which are 20p for 5 minutes. There were always showers available and also very clean too.

There is an indoor pot wash, a couple of washing machines and a couple of dryers. The on-site shop is very reasonable and they have a visiting refreshment/ food truck which was good!

The staff were very nice and they tidied every pitch before a new person came on. Also the park closes at 9pm and opens again at 8am so that’s quite good for getting the kids in!

Turn left at the mini roundabout and there is a really nice bakery just up the road, on the left 👍

Disliked The paid Wi-Fi wasn’t very good at all. It was £20 and only worked in the middle of the night.

Badger powered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site (large)

Liked Friendly and welcoming people. Spacious pitches with clear boundaries. Toilet/shower block within easy access. Regularly cleaned. Felt very safe, our 7 year old was able to have independence on-site and make new friends. Close to the beach and entertainment (funfair, pubs and restaurant). Good options on-site and small store.

Disliked 20p to use the shower for 5 mins and tricky to get the temperature right.

Local attractions

Leadstone Camping's location makes it easy to get to most of Devon's attractions and it's simple to get from the site to wherever takes your fancy. Roads are relatively quiet for most of the year apart from in high season. Dawlish Warren is a top place to be in Devon, partly for its safe, clean beach and partly for its sand dunes leading onto 500-acre Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve, a hugely popular spot with birdwatchers and botanists. On foot, walk to the Warren (it's a safe stroll and suitable for prams) or to the South West Coast Path within 15 minutes; it's also half a mile to the Exe Cycle Trail or the circular six-mile Dawlish Discovery Walk. A mile away is the Exe estuary – another top local spot and a hit for fishing, hiking, biking and birdwatching – and the town of Dawlish itself is a mile and a half away: look out for the famous black swans. Also nearby is the harbour and two good pubs at Cockwood, two and a half miles away, and golf at Starcross before taking the ferry from here to Exmouth. Shaldon, seven miles away, has another golf course and can be reached by ferry from the busy resort of Teignmouth. For towns, take off to Exminster (nine miles; more golf), Torquay (10 miles), Newton Abbot (11 miles; racecourse and ancient market), Exeter (13 miles) and Paignton (13 miles; take the steam railway from here to Kingswear and Dartmouth).
