  • Relaxed and friendly rural site five minutes' drive from Rye
  • A 15-minute drive from the beach at Camber Sands
  • Walk to a pub or over the fields to Rye; bus stop for Rye nearby
Coast, country, castles, campfires – a combo that’s likely to send you haring off (with hounds if you’ve got some that need a holiday) to Hare and Hounds Campsite, a relaxed and friendly place in the highly scenic surrounds of the High Weald National Landscape What a fab location this is… there’s plenty of space around the two and a half acres to relax or run about (depending on your preference), and it’s a mere five minutes’ trot from a country pub that’ll welcome you all in (kids and dogs included) for a meal or a couple of pints (this last not for the kids and dogs…). More pubs, restaurants and shops are five minutes’ drive away in Rye (or you can walk there over the fields); save yourself the hassle of parking by boarding the bus directly outside the site. Filling many a day is an easy task around these parts: Camber Sands is 15 minutes' drive away for beach antics, and you can swot up on all kinds of history with trips to Bodiam Castle, Rye Castle and Hastings, all within half an hour. This is a place that thrives on plenty of peaceful slumbers, so if you’ve got party times in mind you’ll need to look elsewhere. Cosy evenings round barbecues are enthusiastically embraced, however. The friendly folks on site will loan you a firepit stacked with all the necessary accoutrements for a small extra charge - they don't permit guests to bring their own firepits. The refurbished amenities include six spankingly clean toilets and four similarly spick-and-span showers.

Bonza campsite, spotless amenities, ripper hosts. Spacious sites near Rye, bus out front. Bit of road noise for some, but mostly chill. Handy communal fridge/microwave a bonus.

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked Lovely campsite!
Owners are very friendly and helpful but it's also quite a chilled place and we felt very private and relaxed there.
Facilities are great - they have thought of everything - and enjoyed using the fire pit, although could have done with more kindling.
It's a couple of miles from Rye - Lovely walk via footpaths.

Disliked Only complaint is that the automatic light sensors in the bathroom don't stay on very long and consequently I had to step out of the shower in the dark to reactivate it!
There is also some traffic noise from the road but not too bad.

Liked A cosy gem in the heart of East Sussex 🌧️🌿

We stayed at the Hare and Hounds campsite in Rye and absolutely loved it. Even with the rain pouring down, the walk from the campsite into Rye was a highlight—peaceful, scenic, and full of charm. There's something magical about strolling through the countryside with the sound of rain on leaves and the promise of a cosy town at the end.

After getting thoroughly soaked, the warm, spotless showers were a godsend. Nothing beats stepping into a clean, well-kept shower block when you're chilled to the bone. The facilities throughout the site were immaculate—clearly well cared for, and it made all the difference.

Whether you're chasing sunshine or embracing the drizzle, this site is a lovely base for exploring Rye and the surrounding area. We’ll definitely be back.

Powered grass motorhome site

Liked Great grass pitch (I hate hard standing) and all communal areas including showers and toilets were spotless. Plenty of info on the area. Bus stop outside the site.

Disliked Busy road at the site entrance made it a little noisy. There is a pavement towards Rye Foreign and the pub but it stops in the opposite direction towards Rye. To get to Rye walking is a really pleasant walk (about 50 minutes) across the fields but parts will be very muddy and slippery after rain.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Nice layout, quiet site. Decent sized pitch. Easy well marked walk into Rye across fields. Good little washing up area.

Disliked We live in a very quiet rural area and so the road noise was a bit annoying. However, if you live in a town or city it probably won't bother you as its very quiet after about 10pm.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Nice big flat and grassy pitches, available refrigerator and microwave, washing up area under cover, lots of little details like dedicated drinking water spigot, easy places to put rubbish, and even dog parking by the toilets! Lockable charging containers for phone or power bank. Relatively quiet area despite unavoidable car noise from road. Bus stop right outside the campsite! Clean and very organized. Loved the fire pit rental!

Disliked It would be nice to have more toilets/dressing rooms available, though I never had to wait. I can imagine during the high season it might get a bit busy. The bus to/from Rye town did not run often enough, though that is not the fault of the campsite, and it was sufficient for my needs on this trip.

Local attractions

Love long walks or bike rides? Site staff will happily point you towards plenty of places to get those legs going – top picks include the family trails and dedicated mountain bike trails at Bedgebury Forest (half an hour’s drive), gentle strolls around seafront Romney Marsh (25 minutes) and trips to Bewl Water (35 minutes) for walking, cycling, fishing and rowing on the lake. Want more watersports? Spectacular Camber Sands beach (15 minutes’ drive) is a popular place to have a crack at kitesurfing, while the calmer waters around Rye are more suited to windsurfing and paddleboarding. If you’d rather stay dry, Rye’s a fab place for a laidback day bimbling around the castle, museums and antique shops. Other landlubbing days out include the moated medieval Bodiam Castle (20 minutes’ drive), rides on the Northiam Steam Railway (10 minutes) and meeting all sorts of farm animals, birds of prey and butterflies at the Rare Breeds Centre (20 minutes), where you’re highly encouraged to time your visit to coincide with pig racing time.
