Pitch with picnic table

  • Well-kept Durham touring park 15 minutes’ drive from Bishop Auckland
  • Auckland Palace 15 minutes’ drive; High Force Waterfall half an hour
  • Country views from landscaped pitches; friendly livestock on site
It’s easy to roam wild from Stag Park, a peaceful and well-maintained tourer site in the middle of County Durham countryside, as it’s on the cusp of scenic walks in Hamsterley Forest or Weardale (both 20 minutes’ drive). Half an hour’s drive away, there’s also an unmissable hike along the River Tees leading to High Force Waterfall – the highest falls in England. This little green haven has rural views from all its pitches, which are all fully serviced with electric hook-ups and fresh water, neatly divided up by hedges and provided with their own picnic tables. There’s also a shared picnic area, while showers, toilets and a washing-up area are available at one end of the site. Once you’ve settled in, you’ll probably want to say ‘hi’ to the resident deer, goats and donkeys – the latter are particularly keen to make friends with all guests. There’s a large supermarket in Bishop Auckland (15 minutes’ drive) if you need a stock up of provisions, and a scattering of rural pubs within 20 minutes or so by car if you’d rather dodge the cooking altogether.

What customers say

Spick-and-span site, big, flat pitches (water/elec). Friendly owners (Beth & co). Clean loos & dishwashing. Kids loved the playground. Secure gates & quiet spot near Hamsterley Forest a bonus. Deer, goats & a donkey were a hit! Some found portaloos/showers a bit cosy, but super clean.

Liked Wow! What an amazing place to stay! The site is a small family run facility, great onsite presence to answer any questions and support. The pitches are immaculate as is the rest of the site, great toilets and shower were always clean with a fabulous dish washing area. There is a fab play area for the kids as well. Loved watching the animals living next to the site, they provided endless entertainment 😁

Liked Nice friendly staff, the site was kept very tidy . The wash and toilet area was regularly cleaned . The animals were entertaining, especially Keith the donkey who was funny, me and my son will be asking for a fence pitch next year so we have a ring side seat!. Great for nearby Hamsterley forest biking/walking.

Disliked Toilet and shower facilities could be a bit bigger, but having said that they were spotless.

Liked Immaculate site, well set out with ample room for our burghaus 6 xl air tent. Every pitch had water and elec hook up. Kids loved the play park and tuck shop. We all enjoyed watching the animals in the field opposite. Owners were so friendly and can’t thank them enough for making the kids first camping experience the best. Highly recommend.

Liked Very friendly and helpful owners. Constantly cleaning the campsite and keeping the toilets fresh, clean and stocked up. Cute animals on site and kids enjoyed the park area. Fresh water to each pitch which was handy. Showers were nice and hot. And has a large wash area which included washing up liquid (we had brought our own but wasn’t needed). Also had free WiFi which was an added bonus for the kids iPads on an evening.

Disliked Only downside for us was no campfires were allowed. We knew this upon booking but we did miss the small campfire, especially as it was quite cold when we were there. But otherwise a great little site

Powered gravel and concrete caravan site

Liked Excellent management. Beth was friendly and welcoming. Explained all about the site on arrival, and helped with the booking of our evening meal. The site is small, with large flat gravel/grass pitches - water and electric points. Compact but pleasant facilities (clean working showers). Great outlook and 5 min drive to Hamsterley. Working Wi-Fi on the pitch.

Disliked The toilets and showers, and there were only 2 of each, were less than satisfactory. The toilets are porta loos! Which when paying £30 a night, we did not expect or like! They were dark, cramped and with the elsan point right next door, smelt! And the showers were that small, you have no where to put anything. A real disappointment given how good the site looked when we arrived.

Liked Lovely quiet site with large beautifully maintained pitches. Owner Beth is incredibly friendly and helpful. Loved the on site animals. Keith the donkey was a big hit with our Collie ! Watching the deer, goats and geese wandering around the adjoining field was fabulous. Lovely new play equipment for children. Little shop selling sweets, drinks and ice cream. Very peaceful location very handy for a number of the regions attractions. Really close to Hamsterley Forest. Hubby said the chemical disposal point was really good . Also appreciated the free WiFi which was excellent .

Disliked High lift to empty the waste master for grey waste. Could be tricky for people who can’t lift heavy weights.
