Plenty of space for kids to have fun
Open fields

  • Busy, well-equipped site surrounded by the open Suffolk countryside
  • Half an hour’s drive from Sutton Hoo; 45 minutes from the coast
  • Shop, restaurant, miniature golf, owl sanctuary and play area on site
Looking for a Suffolk spot with lots of open space? The dog-friendly Stonham Barns Holiday Park might hit the sweet spot. Well-placed for the Suffolk and Norfolk countryside and coast, this place is equal parts relaxing and active. The latter is very much helped by the fact that the site is part of the Stonham Barns Golf Park site, which has a whole host of family-friendly (and quite frankly fabulous) attractions… There’s a pirate-themed miniature golf course, a sensory room and a funfair with rides and bumper cars, which should all prove a hit with pint-sized guests. No need to go hunting in the trees: the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary on site has over 80 owls and daily flying displays featuring birds of prey. Catch a comedy or tribute act at the Aspal Theatre, sojourn at the fishing lakes or get creative at the pottery painting studio, all of which are on site. Among these attractions are handy foodie places too. There’s a tearoom if you’re craving an afternoon tea and cake, a restaurant powered by local produce and a village shop selling essential food fare. These pair well with the bar and clubhouse, which has sports screens and celebrity evenings, and a shopping village full of niche independent shops. Along with a showground hosting weekly events like car or dog shows and a Sunday car boot fair, these are all one to two minutes’ walk from the pitches. On the immediate site, however, the facilities include showers, toilets, a washing-up area, disabled facilities, wifi, a kids’ play area and spaces for kids to run around and let off steam. There's also a post office on site which provides cash back and other banking services.

What customers say

This big, bustling spot's got heaps to do for families – shops, rides, sports! Sites are usually roomy & flat, staff are often praised as friendly. Downsides? Toilets/showers are a bit dated & not always spotless, and some found it noisy & pricey for what's on offer.

Liked Loved the beautiful, well kept surroundings. The personal touch , being taken to our pitches, asked if we preferred quiet spot or near children. We stayed with 2 other families and were pitched together as requested. Loved the clubhouse in the evenings, lovely, friendly atmosphere, good entertainment! The shops , cafe, the private shower cubicles. What more can I say? If you have children there is plenty to occupy them.

Liked It has more than most to keep the kids entertained plus a bar, cafe, restaurant and shop.

Disliked Miserable campsite, an open field with zero features. Maybe introduce some hedges to separate pitches and give a bit of character/privacy? It’s like a green car park basically. The showers and toilets need investment, converted shipping containers with rubber matting is hardly enticing or appealing. Guests treat it with disdain, loo rolls on the floor in puddles inside the cubicle, you get the picture. I get the impression you go here when there is an event and suffer the campsite facilities for the privilege of attending the show. This isn’t a place you go to enjoy the luxury. It needs investment and tbf not much to make it a lot more appealing and busy outside of event calendar. The funfair is a good touch but seriously overpriced, for 3 of us 1 ride (twister) would be £10.80! We actually would have bought more tokens had it been cheaper. We would visit again but only short stay due to event or as a layover.

Liked This site has a lot to offer particularly if you have children. Good attractions also for adults if you like to search round for a wide range of items including antiques and other curios.
Cafe 24 very friendly and welcoming with well prepared full meals and snacks available.

Disliked Enjoyed our visit but toilets and shower areas well overdue for complete refurbishment.
Regular cleaning and restocking of loo rolls also required.

Liked We requested a non electric pitch next to an electric one to be close to friends and this was accommodated. Friendly staff, level pitch. On site play area kept the children amused for a while. Shower/toilet block was adequate. A visit to Stonham Barn Owl Sanctuary was great.

Disliked Overflowing rubbish bins smelt and attracted wasps. Quiet campsite after 2200 not enforced or respected. Cars coming and going through night and early morning, with an unfortunate gravel road through campsite to pitches that made cars even louder. Campsite was obviously used by workers and holiday makers so some early people getting up and going early was unfortunate.

Liked Pitch (with electrical hookup). On site shops, loads to look at, regular car boots, funfair (for the summer holidays),

Disliked Showers were poor, when you pressed the button for the water, you either got 10 seconds or 20 seconds, no showerhead to direct the water.

Local attractions

With all the attractions on site, it might be a while till you look outwards in search of entertainment. However, when you do, the Suffolk coastline is splendidly within reach, as the site is on the A1120 tourist road. Thorpeness (50 minutes' drive), Aldeburgh (45 minutes) Southwold (50 minutes) deliver on walks, watersports and simple seaside amusements. This is also an excellent place to channel your inner historian and deep dive into the past. Framlingham Castle (20 minutes) is a Norman castle with a walk across the 10-metre-high walls. Sutton Hoo (half an hour) is just as spectacular, with two medieval cemeteries where a ship with Anglo-Saxon pieces was found. Perhaps pretty walks and eating out in restored Victorian buildings next? Snape Maltings (40 minutes) on the river Alde is a splendid setting for strolls and cycles, whether around the riverside loop or joining the Suffolk Coast Cycle Route 41. Take in the scenery on a river boat or sip on something caffeinated in the many independent eating venues in the Victorian buildings.
