Bucks Ranch

- Family campsite and retreat 10 minutes’ drive from Waynesboro, TN
- Half an hour’s drive to David Crockett State Park and Lawrenceburg
- Petting zoo, gaga pit and volleyball court; food truck in summer
Conveniently located between Nashville, Memphis and Huntsville, AL, Bucks Ranch is set on 10 acres of wooded farmland 10 minutes’ drive from the small community of Waynesboro, Tennessee. This family-friendly, Christian retreat has peace and quiet in bucket loads, with lots of nature walks through the trees and a stream running right through the property.
You and the kids can befriend the animals – including horses (book horse-riding lessons on arrival), sheep, goats, pot-bellied pigs, donkeys and chickens in the petting zoo. For the more sporty souls among you, facilities include a gaga pit, a volleyball court and a life-size draughts board.
With a diverse and ever-changing menu of snacks and drinks, a food truck is on site between May and September, so you don’t need to worry about conjuring up breakfast, lunch or dinner in summer. The Bucks Ranch “chuck wagon” also makes an appearance on major holidays throughout the year.
If you’re visiting out of peak season or would rather cook alfresco, pick up goodies for the barbecue from Waynesboro essentials shops – you’ll also come across fast-food spots and takeaways in town too.

Local attractions
Get out in untamed Tennessee backcountry with kayaking trips down the Buffalo River (20 minutes’ drive), or head for the Natchez Trace State Park (an hour and 20 minutes) for hiking trails through forest and along the lakeshore.
There’s a rich history running through the region too. Popular for hiking along Shoal Creek to Crockett Falls and fishing in Lake Lindsey, David Crockett State Park (half an hour) is dedicated to the Tennessee frontiersman who died at the Alamo in 1836. It’s crossed by the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail, commemorating displaced Cherokee peoples as it wends its scenic way through nine states. At Shiloh National Military Park (50 minutes), you can stop off at Civil War battlefields as you hike or cycle along way-marked trails.
Visit the Vaughan Museum in Lawrenceburg (half an hour) to celebrate the life of gospel singer James Vaughan, and pick up woodwork or hand-stitched quilts as souvenirs at the Amish Country Flea Market (40 minutes).
