  • Berwickshire caravan park in the grounds of 18th-century Paxton House
  • A 10-minute drive to Berwick-upon-Tweed beaches, castle and boat trips
  • Woodland walks, adventure playground, Tweed river trips from the site
Want to see how the other half lives? Pack a bag and park yourself in the walled garden at Paxton House Caravan Park. This Berwickshire pile was built in the Palladian style in 1763 for a nobleman who planned to live in it, then inherited a castle and moved there instead. Staying in this small park on the 80 acres of grounds, visitors can take in this popular landmark at their leisure, with river walks and boat trips down the Tweed and/or by delving into the history of the house and its collections of art and furniture. The kids can let off steam on the adventure playground and follow woodland trails to discover wildlife and maybe encounter a fairy or two. For practical things likes pubs and grub and shops, as well as sandy beaches, estuary walks, sea safaris and fishing trips, Berwick-upon-Tweed is a brilliantly convenient 10 minutes' drive away. It’s also got a top castle, and a hefty handful of medieval forts and towers… and you can take a horseback ride down the beach like some country squire with a walled garden…

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Easily accessed site in tranquil, rural area yet close to main transit routes. Beautifully laid out with spacious, flat or lightly graded hard standing pitches. Lovely, sheltered, landscaped environment within a former walled garden. Access to fresh water and electricity and a thoughtfully laid out grey waste drain. Two well appointed wc/shower rooms are also provided and these facilities, like the site itself, are spotlessly clean. Access to acres of woodland and garden walks. Staff at check in are very friendly and very welcoming. There is no Wi-Fi however phone reception was surprisingly good. Paxton House is open to the public and has a very nice tea room, all within a few minutes walk of the site.

Disliked: Despite on line booking, there is still a check in at Paxton House reception which may be challenging for caravaners and impossible after closing hours therefore it is questionable whether this is really necessary.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Walled garden site excellent. Plenty space on pitches and when trees develop will be really nice set up

Disliked: Not so much a dislike as points that could improve site. All relate to toilet/ shower area:- Although it was fine for ourselves, and extra toilet only facility would be good. When busy, it may prove difficult. A mop in shower room would be good. A hand dryer in toilets would be good. A seat in toilets would also be beneficial.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Great walled garden site, it’s well maintained & peaceful. Walking distance to Paxton village & a good pub with food. Grounds of Paxton house are extensive & good walk along the river towards Chainbridge.

Disliked: Not a bad thing for us & it does state it on the details but limited facilities with a block of 2 washrooms but one of them the door is not easy to close. Floor mop/ shower cleaner would be useful. It would be helpful to have a clear notice of arrival process, find a pitch etc. & if house is closed where & when to check in.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Good location in the grounds of Paxton House. Facilities are good. Only two wet rooms with shower and toilet for 30 pitches but this is well publicised. We didn't have a problem accessing then anyway. Full access to the grounds for a wander in the evening (or the morning). Arrived after check-in had closed but just pitched up and saw them in the morning. Extended for another night.

Disliked: Not much. Some pitches are on a slope so may need levelling ramps. A full toilet and shower block and WiFi would seal the deal but you get what is advertised.

Liked: This was my first night in campervan and I think it is going to take a lot of beating! Well kept grounds, solar panels for electricity, very clean shower rooms (2)with toilet and small sink. Amazing walks for dog and Paxton house well worth a visit.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: House, gardens and caravan park are stunning!

Disliked: Lack of mops in the toilet/showers. The pitch we chose and set up on had a broken electric socket which we didn’t find out until we had set up, no prior warning. My wife also got stuck in one of the toilets due to a damaged door, help arrived promptly.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: We like Paxton house because is quite and tranquil. The woodland walks with the dogs are so nice . It only takes 5mins to get into Berwick in the car to the beach .

Disliked: We set up just as you come into the walled garden and our dogs barked at everyone going passed so we felt very anxious about it so wouldn't park their again 😔 we felt very judged

Local attractions

History is never far away in these parts, and the glimpses you’ll get of Lindisfarne half an hour's drive away will doubtless lure you out during your stay. Wild and peaceful, the ruins of the priory and the castle point to the long and turbulent human past of the place while the colonies of puffins and waders carry on regardless. Check tide times if heading out by car; boat trips to and round make a leisurely way to visit with seal and puffin spotting possibilities en route. There are many more castles to peruse, if that’s your penchant: Bamburgh, still occupied but open to visitors, is half an hour’s drive away. Despite being 700 years old, Alnwick (45 minutes) is also still home to the descendants of its original owners and a must-see for JK Rowling fans as the film location for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The little villages of Beadnell and Seahouses (45 minutes away) form the gateway to the Northumbria Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a sea-hugging zone stuffed with chances to go rockpooling and paddleboarding, plus coastal paths and bike trails as well as a haven for wildflowers and (yes, really) wild cattle. Half an hour’s drive gets you to the edge of Northumbria National Park, packed with Roman remains, climbing in the Cheviot Hills and paths round Kielder Water. Further afield, the museums, culture, lively pubs and (of course) the castle of Edinburgh are very doable for a day trip, an hour and 20 minutes away.
