  • Waterside holiday park on the shores of Lough Ree in County Westmeath
  • Lough Ree Yacht Club 15 minutes’ drive; Hill of Uisneach 25 minutes
  • Family-friendly base for water sports; pub within five minutes’ walk
Keen to get out on the water? Lakeside Lough Ree East Caravan and Camping may be the County Westmeath base for you. Set in five acres of stunning countryside on the shores of Lough Ree East, this family-run park in the sleepy village of Ballykeeran has its own jetty and boat slip. As it’s also bordered by a stretch of the Breensford trout river, this means the site makes a pleasant base for anyone into angling, boating, windsurfing, sailing or canoeing. And on the odd day when the weather’s not playing ball, you can stay busy in the on-site recreation room with a pool table and darts board. Amenities include a shower block with disabled facilities, and electric hook-up across the park. Rustle up something for supper in the basic camper’s kitchen, or spark up a barbecue at your pitch. You can pick up bits for the grill from supermarkets in Athlone (10 minutes’ drive), and if you fancy a pizza or a pint of the black stuff, there’s a popular pub within five minutes’ walk. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to accompany you on holiday, but must be kept on a lead at all times when at the park. One other thing to note, please: the owners of Lough Ree East Caravan and Camping do not organise any sporting activities or rent out any gear, so you’ll need to bring your own paddleboards, kayaks and so on, or hire from local companies at Lakeside Marina (five minutes’ drive).

What customers say

This campsite boasts a beautiful lakeside location, offering peaceful surroundings and lovely views. Visitors consistently praise the immaculate cleanliness of the facilities, including showers and toilets, and the well-maintained grounds. The staff are frequently described as friendly and welcoming. Pitches are generally spacious and level, with good access to water and hook-ups. While most experiences are overwhelmingly positive, a few reviewers mentioned minor issues such as inconsistent Wi-Fi, occasional noise, and dated shower facilities requiring payment.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass pitch (large)

Liked Fabulous site, beautiful scenery. Very good location. Clean showers and toilets. Staff very friendly. Pool room and big bonus for my kids. Really enjoyed our stay.

Disliked Would have been great to have a kayak or paddle boat that we could hire. Lots of the "regulars" had paddle boards and kayaks themselves but we didn't realise we couldn't hire them on site. No playground.

Local attractions

Novice sailors can take lessons at Lough Ree Yacht Club (15 minutes’ drive), but if you’d rather leave the steering to someone else, try an evening cruise in The Hot Tub Boat (10 minutes) – spectacular sunsets are almost guaranteed on cloudless days. Not good on the water? Enjoy those sunsets from dry land on the lakeside Lough Ree Park Walking Trail (10 minutes), and take your camera to snap the abundant wild fowl. For a stroll in the footsteps of ancient peoples, pre-book a guided walk around the lofty Hill of Uisneach (25 minutes) – a sacred ceremonial site scattered with monuments from the Neolithic period right through to the Middle Ages. Keen to learn more about times long gone? Visit Dún Na Sí Amenity and Heritage Park (15 minutes) for a family-friendly romp through rural Irish life. As well as painstakingly recreated farmhouses, there’s a blacksmith’s forge, lime kilns and a fisherman’s cottage on display, with historic agricultural machinery in a small museum. Chances are though that the favourite activity for younger visitors will be stroking the furry farmyard animals at the petting zoo.
