Bridge over the river frome into the camping field
Hardstanding and grass pitches
Hardstanding and grass pitches

  • Rural Somerset site crossed by a stream a five-minute drive from Frome
  • Longleat 10 minutes’ drive; Wookey Hole Caves 35 minutes
  • Play area with miniature adventure course; dog-friendly walks nearby
A gorgeously rural corner of Somerset is the setting for Seven Acres Camping Site, which stretches over (you guessed it…) seven acres on the edge of the Longleat Estate, a five-minute drive from the town of Frome. A stream runs through the site, which is just off the B3092; this makes it easy to access, but it also means you may hear some traffic noise. A railway line runs parallel to the road, too… but you might find that the jolly whistling of a passing train rather adds to the romance of camping. It’s all about perspective, isn’t it? Regardless, forget the possible noises and accentuate the positive, starting with oodles of space and a play area with play equipment and a miniature adventure course where the kids can climb, slide and swing to their hearts’ content (while you keep an eye on proceedings from the nearby shaded bench). There are no cars permitted in the camping field, keeping the atmosphere peaceful; after you park up, you'll need to unload and walk to your pitch. Your canine companion is not left behind either, with plenty of dog-friendly walks in the surrounding area. Have a go at the circular Mells Walk (10 minutes’ drive), following the course of the Mells River; or head to Clanger Wood (20 minutes’ drive), known for its bluebell meadows and colourful butterflies. Cranborne Chase National Landscape (35 minutes) has trails leading through its distinctive landscape of chalk river valleys and escarpments; this area is also an International Dark Skies Reserve, so be sure you have all you need to stay until after sundown for some spectacular stargazing.

What customers say

This is a beautiful, clean, and well-maintained site set amongst mature trees with a lovely stream. Pitches are generally spacious and well-kept, with many offering a good balance of sun and shade. Facilities, including showers and toilets, are frequently described as new, clean, and immaculate. The park and playing field are great for children, with a popular climbing frame and the stream providing opportunities for paddling. The self-check-in process is noted as easy and fast. Owners are consistently praised for being friendly and helpful. Some guests experienced issues with pitch allocation, limited toilet facilities during peak times, and parking arrangements, with a few mentioning traffic or train noise.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked The campsite was great: lovely big pitch, hard standing with a grassy area in a beautiful, wooded setting. Small stream nearby and overall relatively quiet and peaceful; despite there being a road nearby. Close enough to explore Frome which is a short drive away.

Disliked There were only shower cubicles, no changing area; i.e no privacy unless you can get into the 1 unisex shower/toilet combo. No shelves to put your clothes/toiletries on. Only 2 sink washbasins in the ladies and people were washing their clothes in them and therefore using both sinks at the same time. There were women going to the entrance to the men's toilets where their washbasins are outside; and doing their washing-up there. In the men's toilets, only 1 urinal and 1 cubical. The toilet block is really inadequate for the whole campsite: including campervans and for the tent camping field. The showers are just flooding the floors as the curtains are hung too high - an easy fix. I appreciate that the site is under new ownership and its a work in progress and we wish you well with your project. We'd like to return next year to see how it is all going as it is a lovely site, only marred by the lack of toilet facilities.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Easy self check in, very clean facilities, plenty of space for camping. Nice little play area. Trolleys/wheelbarrows provided for transferring from car to camping field. Only 12 mins drive to Longleat safari park. Also used it as a base to visit Fleet Air Arm (30mins).

Disliked Not many shady options in the camping field, but quiet enough to find somewhere with a bit anyway.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Lovely site, we stayed for one night while visiting a friend. Toilets/showers clean, two showers didn’t seem to be used maybe just having frosted glass. Little play area in the tent field the children seemed to be having a lot of fun.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Nice open camping field, surrounded by trees and plenty of space for children to run around.

Disliked A few things let this lovely site down. We had no electric so a freezer to re freeze blocks would have been a great help also lockers to charge phones.
There are 3 showers in ladies but only one gets used as others you need to get changed in toilet corridor.
The toilet paper kept running out, a large lockable roll might be better.
The sinks are large and high so a step would be useful for children.
Proper recycling bins. The mixed recycling bin was used for waste.
Some of the site was a bit messy, we did a litter pick collecting old cans from the newly cleared wooded area.

Local attractions

Budding zoologists might enjoy a day at Longleat (10 minutes’ drive), where you can drive through vast enclosures housing big cats, wolves and rhinos; get hopelessly lost in Britain’s largest hedge maze; and take a tour of the 16th-century stately home, with its splendid artworks and tapestries. Wookey Hole Caves (35 minutes), on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills National Landscape, features a subterranean network of limestone caverns and passages with evocative names like Witch’s Kitchen. After having a go at the caving experience, check out the lifesize creatures at Dinosaur Valley or unwind on the miniature golf course. Treat yourself to a visit to Bath (35 minutes). The Roman bath complex in the centre of town includes a sacred spring and a museum displaying ancient artefacts. Follow that with afternoon tea at the Regency Tea Room at the Jane Austen Centre, where you can pretend to be Emma or Mr Darcy.
