  • Peaceful adults-only glamping 10 minutes’ drive from Chard in Somerset
  • Blackdown Hills 10 minutes’ drive and the Jurassic Coast half an hour
  • Private wooden pod with a well-equipped kitchen, ensuite and hot tub
When you’re after a peaceful couples’ retreat in gorgeous Somerset countryside, you’d be hard-pushed to find anywhere as romantic as Barley Hill Pod, tucked into a private farm field between Chard and Ilminster (both 10 minutes’ drive). In fact, this is a rather romantic – and adults-only – getaway: just imagine relaxing in the hot tub (April to October) under the stars while listening to the burble of the stream and the hooting of owls. With tip-top facilities, the wooden glamping pod has a kitchen area with an oven, hob, microwave, toaster and kettle; you can relax on the comfy corner sofa as you watch the flatscreen TV, and there’s a solid oak bar with stools, and comfortable double bed in which to lay your head at night. The ensuite bathroom has a hot shower, basin, flushing toilet and a heated towel rail. Outside, a wooden fence encircles the pod to create a private garden space; the decking area also comes with alfresco seating and a barbecue. Close by is a pond with the resident ducks splashing around. Time to relax with a glass of wine and admire the views, safe in the knowledge that you won’t be disturbed (except maybe for the occasional tractor trundling past), so you can listen to the rustling of oak trees and (hopefully) the sounds of woodpeckers, nuthatches and kingfishers as they flit around the barley fields.

Local attractions

So what’s it to be? Sticking around at your cute private bolthole or venturing out to explore this pretty corner of Somerset? Barley Hill Pod is only half an hour’s drive from Dorset’s spectacular Jurassic Coast. Make a day trip of it and search for fossils on Lyme Regis beach, before checking out the 3D plesiosaur skeleton at Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre (both 35 minutes’ drive). If you fancy a day on the hoof, the Blackdown Hills National Landscape (10 minutes) awaits for scenic strolls along the River Yarty and its tributaries, or you can meander woodland paths from the car park up to the graceful Wellington Monument (20 minutes) for spectacular views over the hills. Need some more inspo? Have a wander around the formal gardens at Forde Abbey or National Trust-owned Barrington Court (both 20 minutes). Learn about Tudor life in the ornate Long Gallery at Montacute House (half an hour, also National Trust) – and after all that culture, you probably deserve a pint of Somerset scrumpy at Perry’s Cider Mills (10 minutes).
