The beautiful lake

  • Well-maintained peaceful lakeside site on a farm in Litton Cheney
  • A 15-minute drive to Jurassic Coast beaches; half an hour to Weymouth
  • Café on site, plus lake for swimming and watersports
Litton Lakes is a family-run Dorset lakeside site with spacious pitches and a modern shower block on a working farm in the pretty village of Litton Cheney. The area is something of a walkers’ paradise, with direct access to a network of footpaths and bridleways, and a dog-walking field just next to the site for any four-legged pals that haven’t had enough of a stretch. If you’d rather set out on two wheels you may like to note that National Cycle Route 2 passes the entrance to the site (and it’s suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities). Back at base after any such outings, guests can get some more activity in by launching their paddleboards or kayaks on the lake, taking a dip in the fresh water or simply settling down to admire the far-reaching countryside views (firepits can be hired and logs are available to buy if you need a bit of warmth to help you dry off after a dip). And if what you really need is some sustenance? The site’s own Purple Turtle Café (open Friday to Sunday) should be your first port of call, for splendid cakes accompanied by cups of tea and freshly brewed coffee by the lake. You’re also welcome to light barbecues for bigger meals, or you might like to take a stroll down to the local pub, five minutes’ walk away. This is a peaceful and family-friendly site that’s particularly attractive for those with an interest in photography as there’s some gorgeous scenery to snap nearby. It’s also in an area of very low light pollution, so stargazing should be on the schedule too if possible.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Location is so picturesque, with streams and brooks close by, the onsite lake and cafe are excellent bonus.
A lovely local pub within 10 minutes walk.

Disliked: Just one minor dislike, the toilets and showers although newly built have N open feel so can feel draughty and cold. Water temperature is a little inconsistent in the showers and the could do with a seat to get shoes and socks on with more ease. It definitely wasn’t a deal breaker though for us.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: We met up with few friends - a mixture of VWs and Tents as well as our motorhome. Sarah made us feel very welcome and was able to put us all in an area together. The toilets and showers were brand new and great. Loved the lake - we swam and / or paddle boarded every day between us. Great area for walks - we wandered over to Modbury farm shop on one of the days. We also enjoyed the cafe on site and had a lovely seafood lunch next door as well (Rachel’s). We didn’t go to the pub but it’s literally the other side of the field so very convenient. Very dog friendly site and area.

Disliked: Although some of us did walk to the bus stop and then head into West Bay / Bridport, it’s a long way (40 mins to get to a bus that goes every other hour pretty much). Great if you have time and the weather is on your side. Those with younger children would need a vehicle to get to beach or any local town / tourist spot. Even a bike might be tricky on the busier coastal roads. It suited us for a short visit - and this is literally the only downside we felt worth mentioning for others to consider.

Liked: We had a fantastic stay at Litton lakes. The site is lovely. We took advantage of paddle boarding and swimming in the lake as well as the lovely food available in the on site cafe/restaurant.
High standard and very clean facilities and close to lots of attractions and places of natural beauty.
Would definitely recommend it to family groups visiting Dorset.

Liked: The lake was stunning, water sports available, and with a gorgeous cafe. We could use our own fire pit or rent one, and the toilet, shower and washing up facilities were fab. Check in was smooth and the place had a lovely atmosphere

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Beautiful campsite set on a perfect little lake. We brought our paddle boards and kayak with us (but you could hire). The lake was big enough to play on but small enough to be safe for the kids.

Staff were all so friendly and helpful…before arriving and on site.

Campfires to hire (or use your own).

Lake side cafe serving food and drink.

Very clean and new looking shower block, toilets and washing up sinks. Bins by the cafe area but no bin by the back shower block/washing up area (could be useful?)

Spacious pitches close to the lake. Perfect for couples or families with kids.

Wonderful little pub less than 10 mins walk along the stream out the back of the campsite.

Will definitely be back!!

Disliked: Nothing! Just a shame cafe wasn’t open a bit later!

Liked: Lovely site, my grandchildren had a fabulous time on the lake with their paddle boards, kayaks and wild swimming! Owners/wardens very welcoming. Looking forward to returning 😃.

Disliked: Didn’t always get hot water in the new shower block and no where to dry your hands after washing them at sinks in the toilet block ☹️

Liked: This campsite is a real gem. We’re a large family and found it affordable especially considering you get full use of the lake to swim and paddle board included. The new shower and toilet block is really nice, well equipped and clean. Highly recommend. The kids are already asking when we can come back.

Local attractions

Need a tipple to top off your evening by the lake? Take a 10-minute walk along to the village’s very own vineyard, Bride Valley Vineyard, for tours, tastings and a bottle or two to sip while the sun goes down. (If you’re more of a beer drinker, you’ll need to take the 15-minute drive to Palmers Brewery, which also runs excellent tours.) Time for the beach? Take your pick from the scenic offerings of West Bay and Burton Bradstock (both 15 minutes’ drive) and the 18-mile shingle stretch at Chesil Beach (half an hour), or head off to Weymouth (half an hour) to see the Sandworld sand sculptures and ogle the underwater beasts at the Sea Life Centre. Away from the coast, top days out might take you to Abbotsbury Swannery and gardens (20 minutes) or to explore the Teddy Bear Museum, Dinosaur Museum and Maiden Castle Iron Age fort in Dorchester (half an hour).
