  • Quiet, family-friendly and rural site in a wildlife haven
  • Just outside of the Dorset National Landscape, with countryside views
  • Firepits for guests' use and two large barbecues available to hire
Your 'darling buds' should blossom at Primrose Fields in Dorset. This small and friendly site is just a five-minute drive from Wareham, the ape rescue centre Monkey World and The Tank Museum in Bovington. Spectacular Lulworth Cove on the Jurassic Coast is also only a 15-minute drive away. There are great walking and cycling routes from the site, such as the Frome Valley trail, the Hardy Way and National Cycle Route 2. Make the most of starry nights and campfires on the peaceful wildflower meadow, which has views of Dorset heathland. Set up base by venerable oak trees and let the children play on the rope swing or chase butterflies. There are wild surroundings, but with the comfort of clean and well-maintained facilities. Pitches at Primrose Fields aren't set, so you can make your camp anywhere in the wildlife meadow, picking a spot by the forest or one with heathland views. Most of the field is flat for easy pitching. Walkers, cyclists, watersporters, couples, families and kids are all welcome on site. Campfires are allowed within firepits, with sustainably sourced wood and charcoal available to buy. Firepits and large barbecues are available for use on site. For food and supplies, nearby Wareham has a good selection of shops, cafés and pubs. A café and farm shop are about a mile away. A pizza van is also open on site on Fridays only, from 5.30pm to 8pm.

What customers say

This is a spacious and friendly campsite, highly recommended for its clean facilities, particularly the showers. The staff are consistently praised for their helpfulness and welcoming nature. Guests appreciate the flexibility of choosing their own pitches and the availability of fire pits. Its location is excellent for exploring local attractions. While generally well-regarded, some guests noted that the portaloos were a walk away and expressed a preference for more traditional toilet blocks.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lots of space despite being one of the busiest weekends of the year. Super helpful and friendly owner including good food recommendations (Italian Kitchen takeaway in Wareham fantastic). Really clean facilities - we were worried portaloos would smell in the heat - they were spotless. Big shower cubicles. Fairly priced without lots of additional extra cost add ons.

Local attractions

There is a lot to do around this site, including many options without even having to fire up the car engine: the Frome Valley Trail is close to hand and the quiet country lanes around these parts are just the ticket for gentle cycling. Take a picnic or a catch of local fish and chips down to the grassy riverbank opposite the quay in Wareham for a restful afternoon, or wander around the town's Saxon defence walls for views in all directions. Another good walk is the Two Rivers route down to the backwaters of Poole Harbour, but if you’d rather get out on the water than look at it, you can hire a canoe, kayak or paddleboard for lazy drifting up the Frome. If you do decide to drive, the fab beaches, countryside and attractions of Purbeck and West Dorset are a short distance away. There's also the birdwatching and nature spotting of the RSPB Arne nature reserve just south of Wareham; splendid old Corfe Castle a 10-minute drive from there, and a steam train from the castle surrounds to the seaside resort and sandy beach of Swanage. North of Swanage is the sandy National Trust-managed Studland Bay.
