  • Rural family-run campsite over 33 acres 15 minutes from Bideford
  • In the North Devon World Biosphere Reserve
  • Pool, sun terrace, putting green and bar with verandah
Smytham Holiday Park is in north Devon in the grounds of a 17th-century manor house. Part open and part woodland, it's in its own cloistered valley with direct access to the walking and pedalling meanders of the Tarka Trail. It's also a rural and family-run campsite over 33 acres with a lot of wildlife and ponds to wander around, all part of the North Devon World Biosphere Reserve in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. An outdoor solar-heated summer pool with sun terrace is on site for swimming or basking in the sun. There's also a putting green and a high-season bar with verandah from which to watch the Devon sunset. There's plenty of room for running about and play games (if you’ve forgotten a football/cricket kit for evening games, ask at the site reception and they’ll see you sorted). A small play area is on site too, next to the indoor games room with air hockey, table football, table tennis and pool (another pool table, for adults only, is available in the bar). Smytham Holiday Park is a mile from the gardens at RHS Rosemoor and an accessible drive from the wilds of both Dartmoor and Exmoor. A day at the north Devon coast, including the beaches of Westward Ho!, Saunton Sands and Croyde Bay, is around nine to 15 miles from the site.

What customers say

This well-maintained site receives consistently high praise for its exceptionally clean and modern facilities, particularly the shower blocks. Guests frequently highlight the heated outdoor swimming pool, friendly and helpful staff, and spacious pitches. The site's direct access to the Tarka Trail is a significant draw for cyclists and walkers. While some minor issues were noted regarding Wi-Fi connectivity and limited shop stock, the overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests eager to return.

Electric grass and gravel campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Amazing site, they have thought of everything and the facilities are some of the best we have seen! They were really helpful with any queries, loaned us an extension cable when our hookup didn't reach!

They have thought of everything, pool, games room, park, a dog wash, bike and wetsuit cleaning and even a free to use dishwasher and my favourite thing was a herb garden which you could help yourself to.

Can't praise this campsite enough we are already looking at coming back and we got home last night!

Electric grass and gravel campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked New, clear and new kept shower and toilet block close to pitch.
Helpful, friendly staff who ran the check in and shop.
Heated outdoor pool was clean with plenty of seating round it.
3-5 minute dishwasher which was free to use.

Disliked You had to pay for decent wifi and no mobile phone signal on site.

Electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The walled garden, the peace, the pool and the bike wash! Lovely staff, the mobile food van, the setting.

Disliked The free WiFi was not great. £2 for 24 hours was good value however.

Camping pod (family)

Liked Very clean site. Lots to do. The house martins and wood pigeons were great, and we saw lots of lovely dogs!
Showers and toilets were well maintained and better than most campsites. We stayed in a pod, and that was really nice. Having a fridge while camping was a game changer! The food vans that came both looked great, although we only sampled the fish and chips. They were absolutely delicious. Games room was limited but inexpensive. The playpark was small too but had interesting equipment.
The pool was the highlight for my ten year old, which was very clean and not too cold. The milk from a local farm was nice too, and we went on a not too long walk and encountered the cows responsible!
A really great site, and as a first time no-tent camping experience, it was a revelation not having to roll up a large wet canvas sheet at the end of the holiday as we hurried to check out!

Disliked You had to buy the table tennis equipment at a fairly steep price. Onsite shop pretty limited.

Local attractions

The 180 miles of the Tarka Trail are accessible from Smytham Holiday Park, following the route of Tarka the otter from the Henry Williamson book. Elsewhere, hire a bike in nearby Great Torrington for the easy 11-mile pedal along the banks of the Torridge river to Bideford; if walking, head out straight from the site or catch a bus from Great Torrington to explore the four-mile trail from Weare Giffard. The area is a wildlife haven: the North Devon Biosphere was one of the first six UNESCO biosphere sites designated in the UK and covers an area from the heights of Dartmoor and Exmoor down via the sea to Lundy Island. Nature of a different sort can be seen at Bideford’s famed and decidedly individual The Big Sheep and one of dozens of days out in Devon suitable for the kids: take the family along also to the Milky Way Adventure Park, also in Bideford, or to the clay shooting and zorbing of Barnstaple’s Southdown Adventure Park. Plant fans should visit the 65 acres of RHS Rosemoor, a mile from the manor, and Hartland Abbey and Gardens at Bideford, a 12th-century abbey with restored woodland gardens.
