  • Camping pitches with Widemouth Bay views in Cornwall
  • A five-minute drive from Bude; half an hour from Tintagel
  • Pub, shop, restaurant and surf hire all a couple of minutes' walk away
Ever dreamed of waking up to a sea view? Or perhaps stoking the flames of a campfire as the sun sets over the waves? Sign up for a bit of both with a stay at Sandparks Campsite, a friendly, informal site with pitches overlooking Widemouth beach in north Cornwall. Those in the know will no doubt recognise this name as being one of Cornwall’s top surfing beaches – and as well as viewing it from your pitch you can also get down there to hit the waves whenever you fancy from here. And it’s not just the beach that’s handy: a pub (with top-notch Cornish ales), a restaurant (with fresh seafood) and a shop (with local meat and fish for your barbecue) are all a mere 50 metres away from the site. There’s also surfing kit hire available for those who don’t have their own board. If you fancy exploring a little further afield, it’s worth noting that this is a fine spot for getting out to walk on the South West Coast Path or to spend some time roaming around north Cornwall. Bude is about a 40-minute walk or five-minute drive away and you can get to the likes of Boscastle, Tintagel and Bodmin Moor within half an hour’s drive. Life on site is pretty simple, but guests have access to a waste disposal point, a washing-up area and a modern toilet and shower block. Barbecues and campfires are both permitted at this laidback spot, as are visiting dogs.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Amazing Stay at Sandparks Campsite!

I had a fantastic time at Sandparks — this site offers the basic yet perfect blend of coastal charm and countryside feel. The pitches are spacious but take your leveling ramps, not many are 100% level, the facilities kept clean and are modern, the breakfast wagon make life morning life wonderfully convenient if you enjoy your bacon and sausage as you yawn your way into the day. I loved waking up to the sea breeze and scenic views, helpful friendly staff. WiFi is a bit iffy in some spots, but I didn't go for the WiFi. As a bonus there is a farm shop, limited stock but you can smash a meal together 'ready steady cook style' just over the road (08.00 - 14.00 7 days a week) its a bit open all hours style, you can't walk round, it is counter service. 4 candles anyone ?

Widecome bay beach (200m as the seagull flies) is a great beach location a couple of pubs, 2 x beach cafes, RNLI life guards, surf hire and tuition. Its a cracking place to unwind. South end of the beach is all day dog friendly off lead. North end has limitations through the summer. You can walk into Bude along the coastal path (approx 1 hour) or from the site head for the Canal Route out over the back of the site a 3 mile walk that after the first 3/4 mile is flat canal path. Alternatively there is an hourly bus service that will transport you and your dog into Bude for £2.50 and 12 mins of travel time, saves you breaking camp.

Plenty to do in Bude, more beaches, it has some lovely pubs, bars and cafes. Plenty of decent shops for all your surf style look. A sainsburys at the top of town and it even boasts a great links golf course.

Overall, Sandparks is a very well situated gem for anyone looking to unwind by the coast — I’ll definitely be back!

Disliked The only slight downside was the chalk gravel road up through the main camping area: every time a vehicle rolled over it, a little dust cloud kicked up, and depending on wind direction anyone camping either side (mainly the EHU pitches) recieved some dust.

From the manager: Hi Nigel,

Thankyou for taking the time to give us such a fantastic review. You have given lots of useful information to fellow campers about the site and great to hear you had a lovely time with us. Apologies about the dust which really should not be the case if people stayed within the 5mph limit but hard to police 24/7.
Hope to see you back with us soon,

James

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Location so near lovely beach.
Rules quiet time after 10pm which was followed.
Decent shower and toilet facilities and access to fridge

Disliked Not allocated pitches, so could pitch anywhere, oftern come back in the day and found somebody else pitched up literally touching distance from your tent so no privacy and can hear everything.

We would go back, but not in full season

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Great location, clean toilets, showers and washing up facilities, WiFi and reasonable prices, easy access to beach

Disliked Lack of marked pitches meant people could set up very close to you, or park how they wanted taking up more space than necessary. Much of the field is sloping. It felt overcrowded with 150 + vehicles on the weekend we visited in early July

Great location, bad management, over crowded

Liked The location

Disliked Ah, where do I begin? This campsite could be a gem — stunning location, just a 10-minute stroll to the sea (which kindly roars you to sleep... and occasionally back awake). Bude is beautiful, the beaches nearby are dreamy. Sadly, that's where the dream ends.

Enter: The Manager — part campsite owner, part tent dimension denialist, full-time patrol officer. I’m convinced he runs the place like he’s prepping for a camping edition of Squid Game. He eyeballs your setup like you’re parking a Boeing 747. Didn’t bother to read the tent dimensions we sent, and then had the cheek to complain that our (perfectly normal) T5 van and modest awning were apparently a crime against camping humanity.

The pitch? More like a game of Tetris on expert mode. Tent barely fit. Car? Good luck. Could’ve put us on the bigger pitch next door — but nah, that would’ve made sense. Once the field filled up, it turned into a festival of elbows and torchlights — people stumbling past our tent all night like they were on a midnight pilgrimage to the loos.

Also — forget maps or useful info. Just vibes (and surveillance). And the ground? Rocky near the road, like someone paved it with regrets and rubble. We basically slept on a bag of gravel.

To be fair: the toilets and showers were okay... when it wasn’t packed. But as soon as more tents arrived? Chaos. Think Glastonbury on a bad day, but with less music and more soap rationing.

Bottom line: If you enjoy being watched like a hawk, having your tent squished into a space smaller than your last parking ticket, and paying premium rates for chaos... you’ll love it here! If not, maybe try literally anywhere else.

Would not stay again unless the management is replaced with someone who reads pitch sizes and doesn’t act like a campsite prison warden.

From the manager: Hi Anonymous,
Thanks for your feedback most of which is total rubbish apart from the great location bit !!! You see the pictures I presume of the site and all the other reviews before you book so presume you knew what to expect. 99% love the fact you can pitch where you like, but I am afraid some people do not like being asked, let alone told what to do and with the organisation that has to take place on a busy weekend in 30 degree heat , I applaud Gary and Sue for the fantastic job they do which again, 99% of clients appreciate. Have a look at our socials for an aerial view of the campsite. I think you will find pitches are well spaced and there were plenty of gaps still available over the weekend, its a six and half acre field !!!
As for the stony ground, the field is called Sandparks, because that is exactly what it is, sandy soil with grass. Hard ,yes, because we have had the driest spring and early summer for many a year and I would suggest investing in a nice blow up mattress to make your experience on any campsite much more comfortable.
Management isn't being replaced so happy camping elsewhere,

James

Electric grass pitch

Liked Location.
Beach.
Facilities.

Disliked Packed in like sardines.
Bad welcome attitude because we had a larger tent.
Manager driving around at crawling pace, directly staring into our pitch.
Very Intrusive.
0 Privacy.
Quiet time was not at 10pm. More like 11-12.
Foul mouthed groups of young lads being unruly but that's okay??#
Packed up early and went home.

From the manager: Hi Charlie,
Thanks for your comments and feedback. Packed in like sardines is definitely an exaggeration but do not deny it will always be busy on a weekend in 30 degree heat by the sea . Fair enough it is not your type of campsite but plenty of others love it as it is and as you say its in a great position. I will pass your comments on to Gary who runs a very tight ship and gets loads of praise for the job he does.
Happy Camping !!

Local attractions

Widemouth isn’t the only bit of coastal Cornwall that’s easy to visit from here. Sandparks is also in a handy spot for outings to Bude (five minutes’ drive), where another top surf beach beckons, along with surf lessons and a sea pool for more gentle swims. Elsewhere along the coast, you could stop by in Boscastle (20 minutes) for a stroll around a traditional fishing village, or explore Arthurian legends at Tintagel Castle (half an hour) – perhaps also stopping by at the mystical St Nectan’s Glen (25 minutes) to see if you can spot pixies as you walk to the waterfall. Turning inland for a while, there are some great walks to be done on Bodmin Moor (25 minutes), or you could delve into the area’s history at Davidstow Airfield and Cornwall at War Museum (15 minutes). Other options for entertaining the kids might be the animals at New Mills Farm Park, the puzzle-themed attractions at Hidden Valley or the characterful residents of The Gnome Reserve and Wildflower Garden – all are about a half-hour drive away.
