  • Family-run pub site in the Cornwall village of Gwinear
  • A 10-minute drive from Hayle harbour and beaches; St Ives 20 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site; hot pub food to eat in or take away
Plant your flag on a prime plot of Cornish land at The Royal Standard Campsite Gwinear, a peaceful pub site in a quiet village 10 minutes' drive from the coast. This family-run spot also has the big benefit of being dog-friendly, and is home to two friendly Westies that are sure to run up and say hello. Set in a green field – with occasionally clucking free-range chickens creating a bit of rural ambience – this site has plenty of pleasing views and outdoor furniture for lounging about alfresco-style. The kids are welcome to run around and get up to games in these spacious grounds, while young ones you want to keep a closer eye can be entertained at the site's small playground. Low levels of light pollution mean the stars look particularly bright in this part of Cornwall, adding a little extra sparkle to evening barbecues or campfires (both of which are allowed). Don't look up too much though, or you might miss the nocturnal creatures like badgers and foxes that like to pass this way. When the pub is open for business, tasty home-cooked meals are available to eat in or take away. There's also a small-scale food shop here if you don't feel like venturing off in search of essentials. That said, this site isn't far from local amenities if you do need to pick up provisions – West Cornwall Shopping Park, where there's a supermarket, café and pharmacy, is two miles away. Please note that the pub is closed on Mondays, but the site remains open throughout the week.

What customers say

This campsite offers large, level pitches and a peaceful atmosphere, praised for its convenient location for exploring Cornwall. Visitors frequently highlight the friendly and welcoming owners and staff, as well as the enjoyable on-site pub and its food. Facilities, particularly the showers and toilets, are consistently described as clean and well-maintained, though some guests noted that the limited number of shower/toilet units could be an issue during peak season. Overall, a highly recommended site for its welcoming nature, good facilities, and ideal base for touring the region.

Electric gravel and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Really friendly owners with a real welcoming vibe about the place.
Location!! Absolutely amazing location in a little village so close to Hayle - brilliant hub to visit right into Cornwall.
The art work on the shower/toilet containers were quirky and cool.
Well kept grounds with large pitches- even though almost all electric pitches were occupied the first night of our stay, you would barely know as there’s a decent amount of space that the sound doesn’t travel far.
The local wildlife, particularly the tawny owls at night and swallows in the morning we could hear.
Everything

Disliked Not so much of a dislike, but a suggestion. I know the site are planning on getting more toilets/showers, which is very much needed especially in peak season, but it would be good to have separate toilets to the showers. At times, you’d have both showers occupied which meant there were no toilets available until the person showering was done- felt like forever when you needed the loo. Otherwise, I don’t think there is anything I’d like to change here.

Local attractions

Gwinear village has its own 18-hole golf course (20 minutes' walk), a 10-acre site that's open to visitors during the mid and high season. Cycling or motoring down to Hayle (10 minutes' drive) will surely be next on your list: the town has a swimming pool, coast path access and plenty of beach space, with two separate stretches of sand. Heading a few miles up the coast, you'll arrive at golden Gwithian beach (10 minutes) where you can stop for a surf lesson. Slightly more to the north are wilder spots like Godrevy Point and Mutton Cove (both 15 minutes) where you can observe a seal colony and a gorgeous Victorian lighthouse. Indoor attractions of note include Tate St Ives (20 minutes), a top-rated modern art collection in an old fishing town that also houses the Barbara Hepworth Museum. Truro (40 minutes), Cornwall's one and only city, has a cathedral, cider farm, brewery and the Royal Cornwall Museum for further indoor times.
