Camper at setthorns

  • Hampshire family campsite near Sway in the New Forest National Park
  • Half an hour to Peppa Pig World; 20 minutes to National Motor Museum
  • Simple woodland pitches with access to marked walking trails
Sitting amid tall trees and dense greenery, Setthorns Campsite is pretty much completely hidden in the New Forest National Park. This Hampshire site isn't far from New Milton, but the pitches are so well concealed that it’s hard to know where the site ends and the forest begins. Winding paths and trails loop through the woodland, branching off in all directions to spacious pitches. And with trees all around, it’s easy to take off on foot or by bike for your next adventure along way-marked woodland routes, or follow the disused railway line just minutes from the site. Pitching a tent at Setthorns also puts you in pole position to spot all the New Forest wildlife, including free-roaming ponies and deer, rare wild birds and small mammals like rabbits and hares, as they go about their daily lives in the forest’s heathland and woodland. Sway (five minutes’ drive) is the nearest village, with a couple of pubs as well as a small supermarket for stocking up on basics. Pretty-as-a-picture Brockenhurst (10 minutes) and medieval Lyndhurst (15 minutes) both have a plentiful selection of shops, restaurants and pubs. And quiet and peaceful it may be, this site is also close to popular family attractions such as Peppa Pig World and the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu. It's very much worth noting that there are no shower or toilet facilities at this site, therefore your own chemical toilet facilities are essential.

What customers say

This campsite is highly praised for its beautiful, tranquil woodland setting in the heart of the New Forest. Guests love the peace and quiet, the abundance of wildlife including deer and ponies, and the spacious pitches offering privacy. Direct access to forest walks and cycling routes is a major highlight. Staff are consistently described as friendly, helpful, and welcoming. While the lack of on-site toilet and shower facilities is noted, many appreciate the back-to-nature experience. Potential visitors should be aware of potential issues with potholes and limited mobile signal.

Select electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Spacious pitches, beautiful campsite in The New Forest with lots of wildlife and animals including ponies. Great walking trails too. Campsite owner called before check in to ensure we had a chemical toilet as per other reviews which I thought was good. Very peaceful, had a lovely time. Some nice villages to walk into with shops, we walked into Sway (closer) & Brockenhurst and took the train too.

Disliked Signal is poor but to be expected as per other reviews. My teens could keep Snap streaks if they were outside van.

Select electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The Select pitches felt spacious and in the summer will be even more separate from each other once there are leaves on the trees.
Good amount of water/waste stations so you don’t have to go far.
Right in the heart of the woods - so perfect for the dog.
Was very quiet (ie lots of booked pitches but no one making noise or disrupting others.
I liked the lack of phone signal, I’m happy to have a digital detox when away.
I’m already booked to go back in the summer.

Disliked No hand sanitiser in the waste stations I used.
If you take children you get a discount, but traveling without kids I am penalised.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Been twice before as open year round and it’s in nice natural surroundings. Plenty of pitches to choose from. A bit uneven due to the terrain but no problem. Good TV signal. Lovely to be right in the Forest and close to local towns & villages. Good railway line to walk/ cycle on from the site.

Disliked No O2 phone coverage at all.

Local attractions

You’ll never run short of ideas when staying in the New Forest. Go horse riding, cycling (you can hire bikes locally too) or hiking in the woodland; try your hand at archery, bushcraft and combat games at New Forest Activities (20 minutes); or go wild on the waterslides at Romsey Rapids Sports Complex (half an hour, a good rainy day idea too). For more cultural pursuits, have a nose around the Georgian docks and cottages at Bucklers Hard (25 minutes) on the Beaulieu River, or step back in time to the days of Henry VIII and take a ferry from Keyhaven to Hurst Castle (both 20 minutes) overlooking The Solent. A must for petrolheads, the Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum (10 minutes) has a vast collection of racing bikes, or you could take a tour of the vintage cars at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu (20 minutes). However, if kids are part of your holiday package, they’ll doubtless be clamouring to get to the myriad rides and attractions at Paultons Park, Home of Peppa Pig World (half an hour).
