Plenty of space

  • Simple campsite near the River Lune in the Howgill Fells, Cumbria
  • A 10-minute drive to Sedbergh; 25 minutes to Kendal
  • Next to the Dales Way walking trail within the Yorkshire Dales
Beck Foot Campsite is a back-to-basics Cumbria campsite tucked away within the Howgill Fells and yet handily accessible from the M6 (at junction 37 or 38). This spot is just on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with the Lake District not far off either. That means plenty of walks, bike rides and other outdoor antics to be had nearby – and heaps of gorgeous scenery to admire as you explore. Not that you have to go all that far from the site to experience splendid views… this is a place that’s next to the Dales Way walking trail and close to the River Lune for some pretty watery scenery. Town time is close by too, when you want it – head south to Sedbergh with a drive of 10 minutes to explore England’s official Book Town, pick up snacks in its deli and ice cream parlour, source supplies at the independent shops or settle in for meals in pubs and restaurants. The famed farm shop at Tebay services is about a 15-minute drive north too for further local nibbles. Pitches here are of a good size, with space for parking and setting up a barbecue. Portaloos are provided and there’s a cold water supply (but please note it’s not suitable for drinking). Dogs are welcome as long as you keep them in sight or on a lead at all times. Please note that as this is a simple site there are no waste disposal facilities, so you’ll be asked to take rubbish away with you (ideally to the local recycling point in Sedbergh if possible).

What customers say

This basic, remote campsite offers stunning 360° countryside views, ideal for peace and quiet. Campers appreciated the friendly, helpful owner and the "wild camping" feel. Facilities are minimal, consisting of portaloos and a water dispenser, with some guests reporting issues with their cleanliness or availability, and a lack of drinking water. Access involves narrow lanes and a tight bridge. The site is considered pricey by some for its limited amenities, though many found it a perfect getaway.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Lots of space, dogs loved it. Views were amazing. Very basic but that’s in the description, two porta loos which are emptied and cleaned regularly (but still a bit manky, like most porta loos are lol).
Love that camp fires and bbq are allowed as can’t beat an evening sat by the fire enjoying the sunset.

Road in and out are a bit of an adventure on their own lol. We have a lwb high top transit. Wouldn’t want to attempt it in anything wider.
Definitely take note of the info on the booking site about which way to get to the site otherwise you will end up at a very narrow bridge.

Disliked Not a dislike just an observation. It’s on a hill (obviously lol) if it’s busy it can be a bit hard to find a good place to set up with out blocking people’s views. So just be mindful of this when deciding where to set up. Everyone is there to enjoy.

Liked Stunning scenery. You can have fires there.

Disliked I was surprised there was no drinking water. No water or soap in portaloo sink, poorly working flush in portaloo and so one of portaloo blocked.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Location was perfect. 360° views of uninterrupted countryside. Farmer was friendly, came to say hello then left us to it. There were 2 portaloos but we didn't use them as had our own.
Not completely level, but we had ramps so wasn't a problem for us. Couldn't fault the site at all. Exactly what we needed - Peace and quiet

Disliked The bridge that the sat nav took us over, extremely narrow for a campervan, it was a very tight squeeze. Would go a different way next time.

Liked Lovely spot at the foot of the Howgills, wonderful grass, portaloos and nothing else so basic and doesn’t attract noisy families, owner was straightforward and helpful in a Sedbergh armed way

Disliked If the wind is the wrong direction you can heat the main road

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Nestled away from the bustle of Ullswater’s crowded spots, Beck Foot campsite was a gem of serenity. Its peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking 360-degree views made it feel like a hidden haven—perfect for couples seeking quiet and connection with nature. Though the facilities were basic, that raw simplicity added to its charm, giving us the exhilarating sense of wild camping without straying too far from comfort. We absolutely loved our stay and would return in a heartbeat.
