  • Working hill farm in the north of the Lake District National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Keswick and Penrith; 10 minutes from Ullswater
  • Stunning views of Blencathra and the Northern Fells
Check out those views… family-run Gill Head Farm is a scenic place indeed, with a backdrop of Blencathra and the Northern Fells. And it’s a cinch to get to as well – this site on the banks of Trout Beck is less than a mile from the A66, so you can get your fix of proper rural time without having to navigate miles of winding lanes. It’s often said that visitors to the Lake District National Park are spoilt for choice when it comes to activities – and that’s certainly true at this Cumbria site. Days of hikes, horse riding, watersports, climbing, visiting historic houses and wild swimming are among the many options around here. If you don’t know where to start, have a chat with the owners – as outdoorsy folk themselves they’re happy to help plan your adventures and offer up local tips. Whatever you get up to by day, it also must be noted that those views make a great setting for an evening by the campfire – handily, there are firepits to hire on site, and bags of logs and kindling for sale. What if it’s not campfire weather? Retreat to the indoor communal area which has comfy seating, a dining area and a little kitchen area (with microwaves, kettles, a fridge and a freezer) – or take the 15-minute walk to the local pub. To stock up on food for your barbecues/picnics there are plenty of shops in Penrith and Keswick, both 15 minutes’ drive away (or get to Keswick on the bus). Back at base, facilities include a laundry room and a shower/toilet block that was done up in 2019 to offer spacious and clean amenities. Please note that group bookings are strictly not allowed at Gill Head Farm. Due to the rural location, the wifi also does not cover the whole site and is limited to a hotspot in the communal room.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Overall a very lovely campsite, small but not compact. There is at least 4 fields for camping and there were a selection of pitches available including completely next to a small stream. The bathroom blocks were all clean, tidy, well maintained, incredibly pleasant, close to each area and in large quantities. The lady who greeted me was very nice and laid back, there was a small shop with the basics needed on a daily basis. There is also a good children's playpark next to the washing up area, the communal area (with a large fridge, freezer, sofa's, tables, books and WiFi), and the discreet waste disposal areas. The views are spectacular with mountains surrounding the pitches and then a sky full of stars at nighttime.

Disliked: Pitchup advertise this as having parking next to the camping pitches. If you camp next to the river, there isn't parking next to your tent (there's a slop down to the stream/river). If you camp in the fields you can park near to the tents, the cars need to be on a hard standing car park area but the camping fields are around the car parking area so you could pitch up next to the car but this isn't guaranteed.

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: We loved the amenities available on site and found the showers to be a great temperature and very clean. I super friendly welcome and the entire site was so clean. Despite the heavy winds and rain this didn’t dampen our experience. The communal area was a god send and was so helpful when making breakfast and hot water bottles to keep us warmer in the tent.

Disliked: We would have preferred to park next to our tent pitch like we’ve been allowed to on other campsites. But this was a very minor issue and we managed to get way up and had everything we needed in our tent.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (riverside)

Liked: Lovely and quiet Very clean facilities (apart from river) saw one person at reception when we arrived who was nice.

Disliked: We were by the riverside with a non electric pitch. The river had rubbish in it and didn’t look pretty at all. You have to leave your car up a hill which when you are camping with lots of stuff becomes a chore to walk up and down. Cannot get any WiFi at all there so if you needed to make a call or people are trying to call you you then have to walk 5/10 mins to reception to make it. Not a problem if you don’t want to speak to people.

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: lovely views, super friendly and helpful staff at check in. It has a relaxed atmosphere, our dog was welcome and we were able to light our stove and have a cosy evening enjoying an early spring camping trip. The facilities are clean and the water hot which is great after a day on the hills, and the pub is about 10 minutes walk away. We will revisit this campsite x

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Excellent facilities, near main road as this was a stop over on way to Highlands.
Will definitely come again and would recommend.
Excellent clean facilities, hot showers, cannot fault what is provided. A pitch for everyone, my sons were travelling in land rovers with roof tents and awnings and loved it, they stayed for 3 nights.

Disliked: A couple of things important to me, the details on PitchUp say that parking is next to accommodation, parking is in designation spots (I understand why, grass maintenance and views etc) but I have a dog that sleeps in my vehicle and fixed cooking appliances in my small camper (no campervan spaces left so booked a cabin) it is something i look for when deciding where to go, it was a minor inconvenience as just for one night. I did try to call to ask for a possible move to be nearer parking but no answer. Now I know the site, I will be specific when i next book if a cabin is needed rather than hard standing.

4 or 5 small dogs off lead, without supervision, not the fault of the camping site,

Local attractions

Ullswater is the nearest of the lakes at 10 minutes’ drive away, so that’s as good a place to start as any – stop by at Aira Force waterfall on your way down there, then get down to the lake itself for waterside walks, steamer cruises and various watersports – or even a wild swim if you’re feeling brave. Over on the banks of Derwentwater, Keswick (15 minutes’ drive) is another good place to explore, with a brewery, The Puzzling Place and the Derwent Pencil Museum as well as boat trips and paddleboards to hire. Walkers of all varieties have much to choose from around here, from gentle lakeside wanders to uphill scrambles at Blencathra and Helvellyn, both of which are close by. The folk on the farm are happy to suggest routes to suit – or point you towards the likes of Dalemain Mansion (15 minutes), Mirehouse & Gardens (20 minutes) or Lowther Castle (25 minutes) for stately-home strolls.
