  • Peaceful site with views over Eskdale and Wasdale valleys
  • Half an hour's drive from the seaside town of Whitehaven
  • Fenced paddocks and stabling facilities for horse owners
Escape to Eskdale… or Wasdale… or Ravenglass – Parkgate Farm Holidays is within easy reach of lots of the prettiest places in Cumbria's Western Lakeland. You don’t even have to exit the site to start taking in those views, for there’s a rather fine outlook from this peaceful farm over the Eskdale and Wasdale valleys, with fields and forests thrown in to the frame too. Tempted to take a closer look? Fell walkers can stride forth directly from the farm, while more intrepid types scramble up Scafell Pike, half an hour away. Should you tire of the endlessly gorgeous lakeland views, a 10-minute drive will take you to the beaches of the north-west coast for a bit of seaside scenery. Got a horse that needs a bit of a holiday too? The farm’s sheep and donkeys are friendly bunch, so you’re welcome to bring your hoofed pal along for the ride for a small extra charge. Fenced paddocks and comfy stables await on site, and there are loads of trails to trot along nearby. All the farm’s units are kitted out with fully-equipped kitchens; if you don’t fancy cooking there are a couple of country pubs within 10 minutes’ drive.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Sandy and Bruce came round and introduced themselves from the get go, gave an idea of what the weather was going to be like, sorted us with a fire pit and wood and showed us where all the facilities we could use were. Extremely friendly and helpful! Location is absolutely stunning, wish we had booked another day.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or campervan pitch (small)

Liked: The beautiful, peaceful location. The bathroom facilities are like a spa! The staff are warm and helpful. We enjoyed a fire pit with toasted marshmallows. The weather was wild but it did not matter. Also, there were quality books in the 'book swap', always a telling marker! I've left a brilliant Maggie O'Farrell for someone to enjoy. We will definitely return.

Disliked: Nothing

Liked: This was our second time staying at Parkgate Farm and boy did it not disappoint. This time we took our children (6 and 8) and the first thing they did was play in the middle, where all the toys had been left out for every child to play with. They had everything you could think of: badminton, football, hoola hoops, Frisbee, tennis, and so much more. My boys loved it. The best bonus this time was finding a beach only 10 minutes away! Sandy and Bruce remembered us from last time, and just their daily presence of asking how we are and checking in on us, made us feel so welcome. The facilities again immaculate, cleaned daily to a high standard. They even thought about having their own ice cooler boxes that we could use.. Overall 10/10 again and we cannot wait to go again with all of our extended family.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or campervan pitch (small)

Liked: What a great site!! The views are spectacular and with such a small site, it has such a homely feel. Bruce and Sandy were fantastic-nothing was ever too much! The facilities were spotless and the showers brilliant. The pitches were large with a clothes line and bench. We had hard standing for the van and then plenty of dedicated grass space to spread out. The layout of all the pitches have been really well thought out! We have a big dog but she was made to feel super welcome too, and great walks directly from site. S’mores packs and fire pits are a really cute addition to an already fantastic campsite. Probably one of my favourite sites ever stayed in!

Disliked: We had to come home!!

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Super chilled out campsite in a fantastic location. Bruce and Sandy who look after the immaculate site are never far away for information on both the facilities and surrounding area. Walks directly from the site. Couple of pubs, Santon Bridge and Bower house can be reached via the forrest and a short section of road. Further afield there is great access to Wasdale screes and even right to Wasdale head (about 7 mile). Shuttle bus back to Santon Bridge for excellent views over Wast Water another option. Ravenglass and the la'al ratty train up Eskdale valley again very close by. The pitches all have great views over the surrounding fells and the facilities are kept immaculate.

Disliked: Nothing at all.

Local attractions

Legs a little worn out from walking/biking/riding? Take a scenic trip on the Ravenglass & Eskdale steam railway – there’s a station half a mile from Parkgate Farm, or you can board at Ravenglass, 10 minutes' drive away to ride the whole route. While you’re in Ravenglass, take a mooch round Muncaster Castle, a privately owned fort overlooking the River Esk. As well as tours round the castle there are also heaps of things for kids here, including an enchanted fairy trail, a maze and hawk displays. Golfing types can swing their clubs on the courses in Eskdale or Seascale (be prepared for potentially distracting sea views at the latter). There’s a sandy beach in Seascale too; if the water’s too chilly for swims, head north to Whitehaven (half an hour away) to the public swimming pool. The Rum Story, an exhibition in an original 1785 shop, is worth a visit up here too (and yes, you can buy bottles of the good stuff).
