  • Quiet, back to basics pop-up site on the shoreline of Coniston Water
  • Tarn Hows and lake cruises within walking distance
  • A 10-minute walk from Coniston village; two minutes to local pub
Waterhead Coniston is a pop-up site in a properly prime position, right on the shoreline of Coniston Water and a 10-minute walk from the centre of Coniston village (for pubs, cafés, takeaways and shops). Rather than being your standard campsite, this quiet little Cumbria site has been set up in a farmer’s field in a small, eco-friendly farm with animals. It has just basic facilities in the form of fresh water and portable toilets. There's also private access to the lake. The views from here are unsurprisingly splendid, looking over the water and up to the fells – and it’s easy to get out to see a bit more of the Lake District surroundings without using the car, as you can head straight out on walks up to Tarn Hows and local fells or get going on bike rides or hikes by the lake. The refurbed Coniston Inn is a couple of minutes’ stagger away upon your return, although you’re welcome to bring a barbecue along instead if you like. For more leisurely ways to see the area, take a ride on the Steam Yacht Gondola across Coniston Water or set out for wanders around Brantwood and Hill Top; if you’d prefer to keep the activity going there are plenty of fells and lakes to hike around, and a Go Ape adventure park is 20 minutes’ drive away.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Beautiful setting and lots of space. Very quiet at night. But the best bit is the lake side location. Perfect swimming!
The pub next door is great too.
Lovely hearing the owls at night.

Disliked We knew it was going to be basic, which was totally fine. But only one toilet had hand sanitiser. Also, maybe more instructions for people using the portaloos would be good. Like why you should flush before as well as after, and maybe to flush more than once!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Brilliant little campsite. Likes that it was basic. Would definitely go back

Disliked My dog cut her paw quite badly on the first day. I found it.it was the bottom of a glass or bottle. An occasional check of the area might help also the pebble beach area.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Excellent views of the lake and nearby peaks. Great location and clean amenities on site. Excellent value for money. Short walk into the village centre and very respectful campers throughout the site. Would definitely recommend if considering.

Disliked lots of flies around the lake which of course is to be expected and no fault of the site.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Nice little campsite. Plenty of space and a short walk to the village (5mins). The pub next door is also worth a visit. The owner is really friendly and allowed us to leave our car on site on the day of departure so we didn’t have to park in the village.

Disliked The portaloos are well maintained but are still portalooos at the end of the day. I understand this is a pop up site and have no qualms with them being there a sit was advertised on the site before booking.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Good location close to town - great for food shopping and pubs etc. Lovely flat grass site, dry for our stay. Water bowser ok, portaloos bit grim on first day, but clean the rest. Need more sanitiser though - kept running out. Superb position next to lake. Owners attentive and friendly.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked I wanted a quiet camp near the lake and indeed it was perfect. Camped right next to a lake with other campers further away. Jumped into the water as soon as we woke up and it was divine. I didn't expect anything more.

Disliked There are toilets on site but they are just what they are, not dirty but not pleasant either. There is nothing you can do about them.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Spacious site, right on water's-edge. Half a mile to walk to the village, and the walk there is scenic and safe (off the road). Felt secure as the communication with the site owner was spot-on. Right next door to a country pub, although I didn't visit this time. Other campers were friendly and sensible - fortunately there were no wild parties or raves so the only sounds during the night were from the very vocal owls!

Disliked I arrived on a Sunday and found I'd forgotten a few bits and bobs for my tea! Coniston, being a small village, doesn't have a lot of shops. The only one that was open was the spar attached to the petrol station. It was absolutely mobbed, and I struggled to get some stuff. An honesty shop in the site would maybe be a suggestion? Although, to be fair, I wouldn't expect it to sell sausages which is what I was really hoping for for my tea! Anyway, not really a 'dislike' - the site was lovely and I will definitely be coming back.
