  • Small, quiet site on a working farm with scenic views near a village
  • Woodland valley with walks, bike rides and riding trails all around
  • Peaceful Lake District site; no music, groups, ball games or under-15s
Moss Side Farm Campsite, near Cumbria's Broughton-in-Furness, should hit the spot for hikers: it's in a woodland valley with many footpaths leading directly from the farm. And for watery types too, as the farm is in the Lake District, 10 minutes' drive from the nearest lake and 40 from Windermere. And for cyclists, and horse riders, and those who like smashing views of lakeland fells leading down to the Irish Sea… This is a small, friendly and family-run site on a working hill farm with working dogs along with ducks, goats, pigs and hens. Three ladies' and three gents' showers, a freezer and a washing-up area are among the site amenities, and campfires are permitted. Moss Farm's nearest village is Broughton-in-Furness, a seven-minute drive or 30 or so minute walk away; here guests can buy bread from the award-winning Broughton bakery and groceries and meat from a family-run butcher and grocer. The village also has three pubs, two of which serve food, plus a restaurant, two cafés, a petrol station, a post office, a bank and a gift shop. Quiet well-behaved dogs are welcome at Moss Farm as long as they're kept on leads while on site. No music or radios may be used at this peaceful site, and groups, ball games and kids under 15 are not allowed.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely location not it does state this is a quiet site however if that is what your looking for this is definitely not but did not bother us the men’s showers are also freezing yet again this did not bother us

Disliked: The farm dogs are left to roam which is fine there are 5 of them however they are not all working dogs. One of the smaller dogs ate our dogs food and ran off with it there was dog mess that we had to clean up prior to pitching our tent and the dogs are out all day which meant our dog had to stay in the tent for a lot of our time as he is a nervous dog

Rail camping pod

Liked: Very cute and affordable place to stay for a getaway. Great for animal lovers. The sheep will sleep right outside your cabin or tent and the dogs will love to play fetch with you.

Disliked: The showers and toilets could be kept a bit cleaner and there was someone else’s dog fur on our bed.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Nice and quiet campsite, amazing views to wake up to and loved the farm animals. Also a good 25 minute walk into the nearest village which was a lovely walk. Ideal for our 1 night stay it was lovely.

Disliked: Quite difficult to pitch the tent with the floor being so hard, not sure if it's because the floor was so dry from no rain recently but getting the pegs in was a nightmare. Also quite a bit of big rocks sticking out of the grass. Didn't actually see the owners the entire time we were there, 'check in' is confusing as no owner was present and wasn't sure if we needed to inform anyone

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The owner Louise was very bubbly, greeted us when we arrived and spoke to use for around 10 minutes describing the area, the history and about the nearby villages.

The campsite itself was based on the farm, with horses, cows, and sheep in the fields around it was a great experience.

Rail camping pod

Liked: the railway cabins are great. really cknfortable and great value. brilliant views and really peaceful. perfect for people who camp in the summer but want a bit more shelter early in the year.

Disliked: the toilet/shower facilities etc. are basic. fine for me but not good for families with younger children. cabins could do with a power socket or usb port to charge devices. that would make a real difference for minimal outlay.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We loved the views and how we could choose our own pitch, each pitch had a fire bucket as well which was great. It was a very peaceful place.

Disliked: Our only concern was the dogs running freely, the website says all dogs must be kept on a lead at all time. The farm dogs were running freely which is understandable but other guests didn’t adhere to the rules and also had their dogs running freely. Our dog is fairly reactive so this caused us a few issues. The water in the toilet block was also cold which wasn’t amazing when the weather is cold but it’s understandable and didn’t affect our stay, just something to be wary of when booking. We struggled pegging our tent down in the grass due to stones underneath however that could have been the pitch we chose.

Local attractions

Of the many footpaths straight from the farm, the main one is the Foxfield to Broughton route along a disused railway line right into Broughton. Other paths can take you to the Broughton Mills area, Seathwaite valley and Ulpha valley; ask the Moss Farm team to point you in the right direction. If you're in the area for watersports, Coniston Lake, the third biggest in the Lake District, is the closest to the farm and is 10 minutes' drive away. Otherwise try pony trekking at Spoon Hall near Coniston, Muirthwaite Green at Silecroft or Cumbrian Heavy Horses in the Whicham Valley, all within 15 minutes' drive. Historic house fans have many in the area to pick from, like Muncaster Castle, Sizer Castle, Holker Hall and Levens Hall, as well as many National Trust houses such as Dove House in Grasmere, home of daffs man William Wordsworth. The towns of Windermere and Ambleside are about 20 minutes' drive away, as is South Lakes Animal Park at Dalton-in-Furness, an attractive option for animal fans. The staff at the Broughton-in-Furness tourist information centre can give you tips on what's best to see and do.
