  • Simple and scenic rural site a mile from the Yorkshire coast
  • A mile from Hayburn Wyke waterfall; Scarborough 15 minutes' drive
  • A few minutes' walk from the Cinder Track path and a pub
Few things in this world can compare to flitting around the Yorkshire coast. Toing and froing between Scarborough's seaside scenes to Whitby's clifftop abbey is best done by bike along the Cinder Track, an old railway that runs through the green surrounds of the North York Moors National Park along easy flat terrain. And when it comes to finding somewhere to rest your head after all that pedalling? The Hulleys Campsite could well be the answer. This simple and scenic rural site is set a few minutes' walk from that traffic-free bike trail and 10 minutes from a local pub. On top of that, The Hulleys Campsite is within easy strolling distance of the coast (roughly a mile from base), where the splendid Hayburn Wyke waterfall makes a very pretty backdrop for picnics, walks and general seaside frolicking. It's a five-minute drive from these spacious pitches into the village of Cloughton, where a couple more pubs and a farm shop are on hand to keep you fed and watered during your stay. For supermarkets and a wider range of restaurants, steer yourself towards Scarborough (15 minutes). The Hulleys Campsite prides itself on keeping camping here simple. The facilities reflect that, with low-key but functional toilets and showers. Dogs, barbecues, commercial vehicles and student groups are all welcome.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Terraced and spacious pitches

Disliked: No fault of the campsite but one person had a generator operating for most of the time on Sunday. It might not be loud but the background buzz was annoying.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Clean toilets and showers~ quiet place to go! The owner was very friendly and helpful! I’ll be returning this summer¡

Disliked: Nothing is really within walking distance nearest pub is 0.8miles away but this isn’t the campsite fault.

Camping pod

Liked: Loved the pod, it was so nice and cosy! Thought it would be cold (we went when it was raining in March) but it was so nice and warm. We used the bbq provided which was well kept and easy to use. Liked the fact that they provide you with camping chairs. Facilities were right next to the pod too which was amazing. The views were amazing even thought there was low cloud coverage - i bet its a stunning view when the clouds have lifted! Will be returning!

Disliked: None

Camping pod

Liked: The pod was spacious and the beds were very comfy. The view from the pod was just breathtaking! I could have sat and stared at the view for hours on end.
The owner came to see us when we got there and was very friendly and welcoming. The fact that we could take our pooch to the pod was an added extra. We will be back. Only gave one star for the WiFi as there wasn’t any which suited us , as it was down time from the electronic world .

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Nice size pitches. Pretty flat and well maintained. Good levell of amenitys for the price paid. Certainly didn't expect outside sinks with hot water and a communal mobile charging point. For me, the site was well located and central to all my POI. Great little pub within easy walking distance. More pubs slightly further out but again, all within an easy walk. Personally I hopped on my electric city bike which I use exactly for these kind of situations. After a full day of biking/hiking, a walk to the pub is sometimes too much effort, as is a drive. Will definitely use The Hulleys again. Lastly, this was my first time inn these parts. Well worth the 7 hour drive. Absolutely loved it.

Disliked: Had the place to myself apart from one other party. Not sure I would have enjoyed the space the same had it been a full house as a pretty small site.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Location was great, very quiet but with a couple pubs near by. Great views.

Disliked: Showers were not good, terrible pressure and temperature control, the womens you need to be a contortionist to enter and exit. The amount of showers was fine for us as campsite pretty much empty, but if you were to stay there in the summer with all 20 pitches full you'd spend all day waiting for a shower, as there are only 2. The biggest issue for us was the fact that there was an almighty farm fire burning right next to the campsite for the entirety of our stay and was filling the campsite and in turn our tent, with smoke. Do not think it's worth the money. For £72 for 3 nights on a campsite you would expect better

Local attractions

Planning a trip to Scarborough is easy, as Britain's first ever seaside resort is a mere 15-minute drive to the south. Donkey rides, Victorian buildings like the Spa, sticks of rock and amusement arcades are all available here, as are two sweeping sandy beaches, the Asian-inspired landscapes of Peasholm Park and Oliver's Mount, a large wooded hill 500 metres above the town with a well-stocked fishing lake and fantastic far-reaching vistas. Whitby (half an hour) is the other must-see town in the area, but this part of Yorkshire is peppered with other sights too – there’s Flamborough Headland Heritage Coast (40 minutes) with its nesting birds and beaches, Sewerby Hall and Gardens (45 minutes) for tours round a historic country pile, Flamingo Land Resort (50 minutes) for adrenaline and excitement… Want to focus on the North York Moors National Park? Ride out on mountain bikes through Dalby Forest (35 minutes), step among the scenic stones of Rievaulx Abbey (an hour and 10 minutes) or get down to the village of Goathland (30 minutes) to see the Mallyan Spout waterfall and a train station that featured in the Harry Potter films.
